Cold and clear

Has it snowed unexpectedly in Winwick?  No, don’t worry, we aren’t in the middle of some unexplained weather phenomenon (although we are in the middle of the Winter Haven KAL and and I always hope for snow in the winter!).  These are photos taken from December last year that I wanted to remember so this is a catch up post.  Winwick’s weather today is (yet again), damp and grey and it actually makes me very happy to see remember this weather instead!

I took a trip up to Skipton to see my friend Lucy before Christmas; the weather had been cold and snowy, and although the snow and ice had disappeared from most of Winwick, the dog and I still found some to skate our way through on a quick walk before I set off to Skipton.  Walking through the fields was lovely, and the pink morning sky is always a joy to see.  That lane, though – phew, it was very slippery!  You can see how the ice is shining on the photo – we had to pick our way very carefully down there!

Once I was off to Skipton, the roads were fine.  It’s a motorway run for most of it and then I can either go through villages or up over the moors.  I love driving over the moors, I love the space and the big sky and sometimes seeing the sheep.  I decided to take the risk that the roads would be clear enough to drive.

I wonder what created that vapour trail?!

A view across frosty moorland to Skipton, which is shrouded in fog

As clear as it was up on “the tops”, Skipton was shrouded in thick fog.  If you look in the photo above, you can just about see “Lucy’s hill” in the centre of the photo looking as if it’s suspended in mid-air and below that, that bank of cloud is Skipton.  It looks like the land stops just beyond the strip of dark green trees, but it doesn’t – there’s a whole town under that cloud!

An empty road with pine trees in the distance and a blue sky with wispy clouds above. There are sheep on and next to the road.

Ah, the sheep!  I love seeing them here, and it always makes me smile to see the “sheep on road” signs that are put out along the road because there’s one that really shouts to let you know the sheeep are out!

It’s about 10am in this photo and you can see how low the winter sun is behind me.  Now we’re in January, the days are slowing lengthening and the sun is moving higher in the sky.  Or at least, I am pretty certain that’s what it’s doing – if it would only stop being damp and grey in Winwick, I’d let you know for sure!

Some sun earlier, but then clouds came over and now at 1-30pm just starting to rain!! Did shopping in the dry, now can knit this afternoon with a recorded book.

We struggle with the grey and damp here in NE Ohio, too. This has been a strange winter so far; more rain, and very little snow. That strange yellow light is peeking through this morning so that’s that’s got me motivated to do some “new year” cleaning. This afternoon I’ll reward myself by working on my KAL, the Couthie Shaw!

The weather is definitely different this Winter. It is so nice to have the KAL and be able to relax and knit. With the bulky yarn the mittens are a fast knit. Now I may start some socks. Think Spring !
