Friday happy moments

The hyacinth on the windowsill has finally decided to flower. I’ve seen lots of beautiful hyacinths in blogland over the last couple of weeks but mine is a bit late to the party. Never mind, there’s nothing like making a grand entrance and smelling wonderful to boot!

A cup of tea and a toasted teacake. Just what you need after a cold wintery dog walk – and no, I wasn’t sharing with the dog!

Snowdrops are finally peeping through, we’re lucky to have lots of them in our garden and I always love seeing their little white heads appearing through the drabness of the winter borders.

Hellebores too! These ones are tucked away underneath the apple tree and it’s easy to miss them unless you go looking. It always makes me so happy to spot flowers that I haven’t noticed before.

More hellebores. I just love them in all their varieties – even the stinking ones that seem to be taking over one of the borders. This one is the Corsican hellebore, Helleborus argutifolius. Aren’t those serrated leaves wonderful?

And the thing that’s made me most happy today … my skein of Sparkleduck yarn for my new socks is now in a ball and I’ve made a start on the gauge swatch. Happy, happy, happy!

This week I’ve discovered Planet Penny Happy Friday and it’s been lovely to see everybody else’s happy moments.  Flowers, beautiful skies, pets and knitting … what wonderful, uncomplicated souls we are!

Too true. It is so good to find the pleasure in simple things. One of these days I shall get around to buying some Hellebores, I do really like them. Those serrated leaves are wonderful. I love it when the flowers start showing up in the garden and hedgerows, it really does make you happy to come across an unexpected one. It was lovely to see you over on my blog. Thank you for popping by 🙂

Lovely hyacinth – gorgeous colour. Your beautiful garden photos make me itch to get outside to check whether my hellebore buds have opened out yet but it's pouring with rain – has been for days! Thanks for sharing. Elizabeth xx

When it stops raining, I bet you'll be amazed at what's sprung up in your garden – plants are like that! xx

Stunningly gorgeous photos. And it was nice to meet you for a bit of Friday Smiles, too. Sometimes the simplest things make the most smiles.

I got very excited finding snowdrops coming up in the garden too – they're so cheering at this time of year. I love your Herdy mug and coaster and I can almost smell that hyacinth from here! Have a wonderful weekend. x

I'm surprised you can't smell the hyacinth, it nearly knocks us over every time we go into the room! I'm a huge Herdy fan and love my Herdy mug! xx

I've had a lovely visit to your blog. It was like visiting a friend. Your hyacinth looks beautiful and I bet it smells wonderful. Your tea and toasted teacake just made me want to sit down at the table and join in. Isn't it lovely to see life returning to the garden, hellebores are so pretty. And that sock yarn is just wonderful, so so PINK. Have a very happy weekend.

I love the color for your socks. Those will be awesome! I forgot my hyacinths this year! I am really missing them but have enjoyed seeing other's blooming and looking so pretty. This was my first week over at Planet Penny also. I have enjoyed looking at everyone's different projects.

    • Winwick Mum says:

This is the first year for a while that I've had hyacinths in the house but I've really enjoyed them this year. Thanks for visiting! xx

If you are quick with your socks they will match the hyacinth! 🙂 I love the colour. I rather like the look of your toasted teacake too… one of my al time fav snacks, sadly given up on all but the most special of occasions as wheat and i don't seem to get on! x

    • Winwick Mum says:

You know, I hadn't thought of that – I'd better get knitting! What a shame to have to give up teacakes, although knowing that they're not going to agree with you does take some of the enjoyment away. Hope you've found a good alternative! xx

Second lot of snowdrops I have seen (online) today. Do garden ones come a bit earlier? I think of them as Feburary flowers, though I guess we are nearly there.

    • Winwick Mum says:

Ours usually flower in January – maybe it's different in other parts of the country. I've seen a few pictures online today too, though, and all of the flowers seem further on than ours – perhaps the mild winter has something to do with it? xx

Hello. Although I subscribe to your blog, I'm here say "hi" from Penny's Happy Friday. Your posts about knitting socks with 6 ply yarn intrigued me so much that I ordered a skein of Regia 6 ply to make a pair. Wish me luck. Your new sparkle socks will be lovely I'm sure 🙂

    • Winwick Mum says:

Hello Lilly's Mom, it's nice to see you again! I'm really pleased that you're going to try the 6ply socks so good luck with them, and don't forget to let me know how you get on! xx

That´s a beautiful hyacinth. I can almost smell it from here. I love the Helibores too. When I was living in UK I had a Christmas flowering one, and another that bloomed at Easter.
Toasted teacakes were a special treat when my big sister took me out, and I still love them. Kate xx

    • Winwick Mum says:

Hi, it's lovely to see you, thanks for visiting. My Christmas Hellebores are only just thinking about flowering now – but so are the Easter ones! I don't think they're very good at working out which season it is! 🙂 xx

  13. Angel Jem says:

If your hyacinths are late, mine aren't even at the party yet, so don't worry. I'm thinking there's another 3 days before they blossom properly.
I love seeing the flowers in your garden. I am so not a gardener so it's brilliant to see the flowers that I can kill just by looking at them in somebody else's capable hands.

    • Winwick Mum says:

A vicarious gardener! That's perfectly OK – we decided a long time ago that my husband would be a Garden Appreciator because he has no idea what he's doing unless he's being my Garden Slave and does exactly what he's told! xx

So jealous of your spring flowers already popping up! So cold here – we are literally months away from spring bulbs here in Toronto. We can hope for a glimpse of warmth by the beginning of April – not before! I am travelling to the UK mid-March and I hope to enjoy your warmer temperatures then!!

    • Winwick Mum says:

It does seem like a very long time till spring for you! Hope the UK weather is kind to you in March! xx

I have recently entered the world of blogging and discovered your lovely blog. Love the photo of your beautiful hyacinths and looking forward to trying out your sock pattern.

Hello Jan, it's lovely to see you! Thanks for your comments, and do let me know how your socks turn out! xx

Thank you for visiting and commenting on my blog 🙂 I just got back in from a long dog walk too, and it was COLD! -18C this morning, but at least the wind hasn't picked up yet. The pup and I are recovering inside … me with hot tea, him with a cuddle in a blanket. You're so fortunate to have flowers already peeking through outdoors! I don't even begin to look for signs of life until April. Your hyacinth is beautiful, and I can just imagine how wonderful it smells! Good luck with your new pair o' socks 😉 Wendy x

    • Winwick Mum says:

-18! That IS cold! And I can imagine with the wind it wouldn't be nice out walking the dog at all. Lovely to see you, thanks for visiting xx

lovely smiles for this week. unfortunately, a squirrel has been and eaten all the new bulbs I planted in autumn, I have just 1 lonely flower. by the way, I live near to you in Leigh lol
    Tilly

    • Winwick Mum says:

Yes, you are close by! Hope you have survived this week's snow OK. I haven't seen much of the squirrels this year so I'm hoping the bulbs that I have left are safe – only time will tell! xx
