Socktember 2026 – Week 4 review

It’s the end of Week 4 of Socktember 2026 and I hope you’ve had a lovely week!

The sunshine has been back this week although it’s starting to feel colder in the mornings which is definitely a sign that sock weather is approaching!

If you’ve just found the blog for the first time, Socktember is running throughout September this year and I’m encouraging you to start your first pair of Basic 4ply Socks if you’re new to sock knitting (or start a new pair if you’re not), to knit a pair of September Socks (that’s my new pattern out for September) or to get on with your gift knitting if you’ve got plans for Christmas or holiday presents because it’s not that long until December!

As part of Socktember, I’ve got two prize KALs (Knit-alongs) for the Basic 4ply Socks and the September Socks and you can be entered into the draw by posting your socks on Ravelry in the Winwick Mum group threads (more on how to do that coming up).

First, let me show you what’s been going on this week!

This week, the Basic 4ply Socks have been taking the lead …

Some of these are very first pairs of socks, and I do love to see first pairs of socks!  There’s something about them – unique design features (never mistakes!) and all – that you  just don’t get in other pairs as you grow more confident and adapt the pattern to suit yourself.  Achieving anything for the first time is always a wonderful thing, and I love the confidence that comes with knowing that you have knitted something that you can actually wear, and most people think is far too hard.  It’s incredible!

Yes, there’s also a pair of Basic 4ply Shortie Socks in there too, and I’m allowing those into the draw as they are still Basic 4ply Socks that use the Sockalong tutorials, they’ve just got less leg 🙂

Jayne has finished her pair of September Socks and you can see they are drying nicely on the rack here …

and Tiki is on her second sock and making great progress …

There are only 4 more days to post your socks to be in the draw!  I’ve got to be honest, entries are a bit thin on the ground right now so there’s a very good chance of winning 🙂  Your photos need to be in the Ravelry chat threads for the Basic 4ply Socks and the September Socks to be included in the draw but if you’re not on Ravelry, you can post on Facebook (if you tag me or use #Socktember, it’ll make it easier for me to spot your posts) or send me an email with your photos and I’ll upload them for you.

There’s more info on the KALs in the Socktember post which you can find here: Socktember 2026

I posted a quick tutorial on how to upload your photos last week and thought I’d share it again today.  This info is also in the Socktember post.

If you’ve never added a photo to a Ravelry post before, this is how you do it.

1  Find the thread that you want to add your photos to.  For the finished Basic 4ply Socks thread click here, and for the finished September Socks click here.  Click on “reply to thread”.

2  Click on the photo icon in the bar above the text box.

3  You can use a photo from the web but it’s easiest to add your photo from your project page.  Yes, this does mean that you’ll need to have created a project page in your notebook, but it also means that you have a record of your sock and your progress.  This is particularly helpful if you go back to a project later and you’ve made notes to remind you of what you did, or you want to check out someone else’s project page for a pattern to see if they’ve made any notes that can help you if you’re stuck.

If you aren’t on Ravelry and don’t want to sign up then that’s fine, you can send me your photos and I will upload them.  You won’t be able to upload images from your computer without paying (if you haven’t already paid to do so), so sending them to me will save you the money.  Obviously it’s better for me as a designer if you can join Ravelry and create a project page, but some people have issues with Ravelry so I’m not going to say that you can’t join in unless you do so.

I have finished my first September Sock at last – ta dah!

A hand-knit bright blue wool sock lies on a wooden surface beside embroidery scissors and a leather needle case, creating a warm, handmade craft scene.

I’m very pleased with it – the yarn is 4ply sock hand-dyed by Caroline of Yarn Unique (she’s exhibiting at Yarndale this weekend if you’re going – do take a look at her gorgeous yarns!) and I’m very much looking forward to wearing this pair.  I can do that as they’re not my pattern socks – I learnt a long time ago not to wear those pairs in case I ever needed to photograph them again, although there are a couple of notable exceptions, my Don’t Be Koi and Well-Travelled Socks being the ones that did get worn as they were knitted for not so small daughter’s adventures.

There’s not been any progress on my Basic 4ply Socks this week as I’ve been busy working my design for next year’s Winter Haven KAL which will start in January.  As you can see, it’s going splendidly well …

A tangled pile of purple and grey yarn sprawls across a pale wood surface beside yarn balls and a tiny gold-and-white charm, creating a messy, crafty mood.

but I’m sure I’ll get there in plenty of time for the start of the KAL! 🙂  The Winter Haven KAL asks you to use a Winwick Mum pattern and/or Winwick Mum yarn to join in, and next year, I’m going to be using Hidden Gem.

If you’ve not heard the news, West Yorkshire Spinners has been up for sale but there’s a UK manufacturer close to completing on the purchase.  I don’t know what’s going to happen with Winwick Mum yarns just yet, but for the time being it’s still available in many yarn shops and stashes so I will be using it for next year’s pattern.

And that’s me for this week’s round up.  There were two more Sock of the Day posts out this week if you want to catch up with those (you’ll find them on the list of posts on the blog home page or by using the Socktember category link if you’re on a laptop), and I’ve got two more to come this week before Socktember ends.  The final day to upload your photos will be Wednesday 30 September, and I’ll be doing the draw shortly after that so don’t forget to upload your photos if you want to be in with a chance of winning.

I’ll see you next week! xx

Well, I finished a sock last night, my only one for September but I think the foot is a bit short so will be undoing this evening!
Many thanks for popping into my blog – unfortunately you came up as no reply. I always recommend your basic sock pattern and tutorials to anyone looking to knit their first sock – or struggling with knitting socks. xx

It’s been ages since I visited your blog so I was glad to be reminded of it! I have no idea why I was no reply but never mind, it was lovely to see your photos and know you’re keeping well! 🙂 xx

No finished socks to share unfortunately. I managed one sock but didn’t finish off the yarn properly after grafting the toe and ended up with a hole. I successfully managed to pull out to the start of the toe decreases and pick up the loops – a first for me! Proud of myself for not having to start the whole sock again. So a win of sorts.

I’m knitting the September socks, but there was no way I could have finished a pair that quickly. In fact I’m only just doing the heel flap on the first sock, so I’m a long way off! I’m enjoying the pattern, at last, though, after finding it difficult to follow for the first 16 rows. Thank you.

Ah, it does take a bit of concentration in the beginning but once you’re in the flow of it, you can see how the stitches go and I’m sure by the time you’re at the toes of your second sock, you’ll be doing it in your sleep! Thank you for buying the pattern, I’m really glad you’re enjoying knitting it 🙂 xx
