Socktember 2026 – Sock of the Day 4
Sock of the day: Mosaic pattern
Monkey Puzzle Socks

Why knit the Monkey Puzzle Socks?
The Monkey Puzzle Socks pattern is colourwork without being colourwork – it’s mosaic! Only one yarn is used at a time to create the pattern on the leg which makes it much easier than carrying floats; everything is worked using slip stitch which makes this a very clever sort of knitting and definitely much easier than working with more than one colour at once.
The pattern is based on the Basic 4ply Socks pattern so if you’re familiar with that, you won’t have to learn anything new about the construction. The mosaic section has both charted and written instructions and once you’re past that, it’s plain knitting down to the heels and the toes.
Is this pattern suitable for beginners? Well, I am never going to tell you not to knit a pattern that calls to you, so if this is the one then go for it! I would say that you need to be careful about following the instructions, though, so this is definitely not a pattern to pick up and put down mid-round!
Pattern features

The cuff is knitted to blend into the mosaic panel – I love this two-colour cuff! There’s both a chart and written instructions with this pattern so you can use whichever you prefer, and if you’ve never used a chart before, this is a great opportunity to give it a go. Personally, I find charts much easier to use than written instructions, especially for something as big as this, and because it’s just one panel at the top, you find that you get through it quite quickly.
If you’re familiar with the Basic 4ply Socks pattern, you’ll recognise the heel flap and gusset-type heel knitted but instead of using heel stitch, the two colours are knitted alternately – it looks very effective and still creates a comfy, cushioned heel!

Which yarn should I use?
These socks are knitted in West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply in shades Chocolate Lime and Butterscotch.
