Socktember 2026 – Sock of the Day 7
Sock of the day: Colourwork pattern
Rainbow Zig Zag Socks

Why knit the Rainbow Zig Zag Socks?
Well, let’s be honest, why would you not want to? Oh, those zig-zaggy rainbows, those stripy feet and heels – this is the perfect pattern for a self-striping yarn (because yes, that’s what creates the magic here) and it’s also an easier pattern than you might expect. Based on the Basic 4ply Socks pattern, the sock shape will be familiar and all you have to do is add the rainbows!
The Rainbow Zig Zags Socks pattern is one of the four exclusive patterns featured in More Super Socks and whilst you might think this is too hard if you’re a relatively new sock knitter, my intention when writing More Super Socks was always to encourage you to step out of your comfort zone just a little bit. More Super Socks also contains the Easy Colourwork Socks pattern with the step-by-step photo and video tutorial to go with it, and I can promise that once you understand how colourwork knitting works, this pattern will not seem out of reach.
Pattern features

The Rainbow Zig Zag Socks are surprisingly easy to knit, once you’re confident with knitting with more than one colour – and even that is just practice! You’re still knitting the same number of stitches, just some with one colour and some with another. The pattern is mirrored so you have a left and a right foot (whichever way round you want to wear them) and there are separate charts and written instructions for each foot.
If you’re familiar with the Basic 4ply Socks pattern, you’ll recognise the heel flap and gusset-type heel knitted with two colours to make a comfy, cushioned heel. What makes this heel flap stand out from the ordinary is that fact that you’re using two colours, but that’s not a hard to skill to master. You can do it!

Which yarn should I use?
The socks in the photo are knitted in West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply in shades Rum Paradise and Liquorice.
