Why knit the Ryegrass Socks?

If you like the previous Sock of the Day pattern of Rainbow Zig Zag socks but felt that the colourwork might be a stretch too far at the moment, the Ryegrass Socks pattern might be a better option for you.  Based on the Basic 4ply Socks pattern, this clever slip stitch pattern creates colourwork whilst only using one yarn at a time.  It’s perfect as a next-step confidence-building pattern for those ready to move on from a basic sock.

This is a great pattern for gift knitting as it doesn’t take as long to knit as you might think and doesn’t use as much yarn either, as you’re working with two colours so you’ve got more of each ball left to knit something else!

Pattern features

Even the soles of these socks look fabulous as the alternating yarns create stripes all by the themselves – these are definitely the socks to knit if you want to impress!  There are both written and charted instructions for this pattern and you might be surprised to know that it’s all based on a 4-stitch repeat.  Clever, eh?

If you’re familiar with the Basic 4ply Socks pattern, you’ll recognise the heel flap and gusset-type heel – this is the Ribbed Heel Flap which combines slip stitches with purl stitches to make a stretchier heel flap.  This is brilliant for people who worry that a heel flap might be tighter on wider feet but like the look of a heel flap sock.

Which yarn should I use?

The socks in the photo are knitted in West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply in Bubblegum and Winwick Mum shade Brightside.  Bubblegum is now discontinued but Blue Raspberry is a very close match.  There are alternative colourway suggestions in the blog post to go with this pattern.
