Hope Socks

Why knit the Hope Socks?

The Hope Socks pattern is a baby socks pattern knitted in thick, cosy DK yarn.  My girls didn’t wear shoes until they were actually up and about walking but I did want to keep their tiny toes warm so thick socks were always the answer for me.  This pattern is a proper socks pattern, not a bootee, partly because I think we should introduce our tiny tots to the joys of hand knit socks as early in life as possible, but also because they fit with plenty of room for those toes to wiggle about.  The ribbed fold over cuff helps to keep the socks on the feet whilst they’re wiggling (also something my girls did with their feet a lot!), and the small size means they are perfect for using up yarn leftovers.

The pattern is based on the Basic 4ply Socks pattern so if you’re familiar with that, you won’t have to learn anything new about the construction.  There’s a picot cuff which makes for a pretty sock, but you can work a regular cast on if you don’t want to include that.

Pattern features

The picot cuff is knitted first, as with any other sock, but then pushed through your needles so that when you come to work the rest of the sock, the cuff folds over with the right side facing.

If you’re familiar with the Basic 4ply Socks pattern, you’ll recognise the heel flap and gusset-type heel knitted and even this small baby sock has the detail of a heel stitch heel flap.  Why shouldn’t everyone wear a comfy, cushioned heel?

Which yarn should I use?

These socks are knitted in West Yorkshire Spinners ColourLab DK in shade Future Dreams.  This yarn was produced specially by WYS to support the Future Dreams charity and is now discontinued, but you can use any DK yarn or 4ply held together to make these socks.  You don’t even need to use sock yarn as there won’t be any wear to these socks, but I would recommend avoiding acrylic so that baby doesn’t get sweaty toes.

When this pattern was released, I donated £1.00 of every sale to the Future Dreams charity and I continue to do that.  To date, I have donated over £200 to the charity.
