Winwick Mum Sockalong 10th birthday

Happy birthday to you,

Happy birthday to you,

Happy birthday dear Sockalong,

Happy birthday to you!

Colourful striped socks on feet in a garden; text overlay reads "Winwick Mum Sockalong 10th Birthday" with a festive hat and stars.

Oh my goodness, here we are, it’s the Winwick Mum Sockalong 10th birthday!  How’s that for exciting?  10 years of the Winwick Mum Sockalong tutorials helping beginner sock knitters get to grips with their first pair … and who knows where that will take them?  Family sock knitters, gift knitters, charity knitters, even designers themselves, boosting well-being with every stitch and, of course, having the best dressed feet around!  I’ve always joked that I’m taking over the world one sock at a time with my Sockalong tutorials, but this I’m going to go one better and say that between us, we’re IMPROVING the world one sock at a time – because who doesn’t benefit from wearing hand knitted socks knitted with fabulous yarns, lots of love and the odd swear word? 🙂  Now, that’s something we can all celebrate!

If you’re new to the blog and sock knitting, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about.  Nowadays, it’s really easy to find online tutorials and videos to help people learn to knit socks and many local yarn shops offer regular classes, but back in 2015, it wasn’t quite as simple.  We forget how technology has moved on!

I knitted my first pair of socks in my teens, wrestling with DPNs and a pattern that seemed to be inordinately complicated for a new knitter (you can read my story about that here), only returning to socks when not so small daughter was a baby.  Even then, I probably wouldn’t have done so had it not been for three things:

1     balls of stripy Kaffe Fassett sock yarn on the yarn shop counter – I used to knit Kaffe Fassett colourwork jumper samples for my local yarn shop as a teenager and as nobody ever told me I couldn’t do it, they taught me to be a fearless knitter and I really love his colour choices – this yarn was hard to resist!;

2    my husband is not a woolly jumper kind of husband but I thought he might wear socks if I made them for him (and he does – they’re his “proper” socks!);

3     the pattern was free.

There was absolutely no reason not to cast on!

Fast forward to 2015 when, after yet another person had told me that knitting socks was far too hard and why would you bother anyway, a chance conversation at a knit n natter group had me throwing my hands up in air and saying “But socks aren’t hard to knit!

Before I knew it, I had announced to the world that I would be writing some beginner sock knitting tutorials for the blog to go with the free Basic 4ply Socks pattern that I had released the year before.  The Winwick Mum Sockalong tutorials would also be free because by the time I wrote them, I knew that the well-being resulting from sock knitting was so important that I didn’t want anybody to be stopped from experiencing this for themselves – and I never thought about charging for the pattern because I had really appreciated a free pattern myself when I got back into sock knitting.  It’s nice to pay it forward!

The idea was that anybody who wanted to knit socks would be able to follow the Sockalong tutorials and discover the joy of hand knit socks that many of us already appreciated.  I would write them as if we were sitting together because it’s always nicer to knit with a friend, and there would be lots of photos to go with those words – this does mean my tutorials are more wordy than some, but I like to think that we’re chatting and we’ve got a lot to say!

And that’s how it all started.  I love that I’m still chatting to people about socks ten years later, and it truly makes my heart sing every time I think of how many people have benefitted from bringing sock knitting into their lives.

And as you can probably imagine, I’ve not stopped in those ten years!

In the same year as the tutorials were written and published on the blog, I turned them into paperback form as Super Socks for those who couldn’t or didn’t want to be online all the time, and also e-book form for those who prefer that format.  I started the Winwick Mum Sockalong Facebook group so that people could ask questions in real time and that’s been amazing – there are thousands of people from all over the world in this group and thanks to the magic of time zones and people’s generosity in helping others to learn, this really is a group that works in real time – whatever the time!  There’s also the Winwick Mum Knit n Natter group on Facebook which came about as those who were knitting socks also wanted to chat, to share other project pictures and to just connect with other people.  The Facebook groups have been wonderful places to see not just socks started and finished as people have decided that now is the right time for them to be learning to knit socks., but also see progress as knitting confidence has developed (it’s amazing what you can do when you’re cheered on by like-minded friends!) – and more than a few on and offline friendships start too!

What else?  Well, a bit later on I wrote More Super Socks for people who had knitted their first basic pairs and wanted to move onto a different pattern, but still felt that other patterns were a step too far.  It contains four of my in-depth tutorials (with videos!) and four exclusive patterns which are more wordy than many you will find, but those extra steps have made it easier for people to step out of their comfort zones and to branch out with their knitting.

In 2023, I created a new notebook called Project Super Socks so that knitters both new and experienced could keep all of their sock knitting notes together, and have a copy of the Basic 4ply Socks and the Basic 8ply (DK) Socks patterns (a chunkier version of the Basic 4ply Socks) at hand in their project bags.  I’m delighted to tell you that it’s been a huge hit and even I am wondering how I ever managed without my own copy!

I’ve also won a few awards now (you can see them down the left hand side bar – I’m very proud of them!), I’ve been delighted to be invited to write articles and design socks for magazines, yarn shops and of course, my favourite yarn company, West Yorkshire Spinners!  I’ve been designing for them since 2017 and together we’ve produced a number of pattern books.  I have been very proud to have been asked to design the sock patterns to go with their special Christmas yarns for the last six years, and even more delighted to see those patterns being used all year round, not just with the Christmas yarn!

What I never could have imagined when I first started writing Winwick Mum, never mind the Sockalong tutorials, and best of all is that I’ve got my very own Signature 4ply Winwick Mum yarn designed in collaboration with my lovely friends at West Yorkshire Spinners.  Goodness, I could hardly contain myself when the first samples arrived in the post!  Not only did I get to design the yarn, but I got to design the patterns to go with it and you can see those on my patterns page here.  I have loved seeing the yarn being knitted up, knowing that people have enjoyed using it and have been able to support their local yarn shops by buying it.  And let’s not forget all the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made along the way too … it truly has been an incredible time!

I have a lot to be thankful for, from that day in the yarn shop when I couldn’t leave that stripy Kaffe Fassett yarn on the counter!  I don’t ever take for granted the incredible times that I have had over the last ten years – seeing people discover that sock knitting really isn’t as hard as they might have thought, and all of the good things that have come from it.  I have been very blessed, and I never forget that how much of that is down to you … thank you for knitting the socks, for sharing the tutorials with others who want to learn, for giving your time to help others once you have learnt yourself, for buying my books and my yarn … thank you! xx

So what happens now?  Well, as far as the Winwick Mum Sockalong goes, nothing is changing.  The Sockalong tutorials are staying on the blog and they are still free – I have always said that if someone has the money to buy the yarn and needles or buy the book then I would much rather than they bought the yarn and got started – so there’s no change there.  Super Socks is still available for anybody who wants to buy a paperback or ebook version.  More Super Socks, the follow-on book with more techniques and patterns, is also still available in paperback and e-book versions.  Project Super Socks continues to save the day when we need to know what we did on the last pair of socks we knitted for someone and can’t quite remember how many rounds we worked for the foot … 😉  West Yorkshire Spinners are still producing Winwick Mum yarn which is available from WYS stockists worldwide and there are two collections, so that’s eight colourways to choose from.  There are also videos on my YouTube channel, and I’ve got more in the pipeline to be uploaded over the next few months.

I’d really love you to be part of the Winwick Mum Sockalong 10th birthday celebrations as much as you can (or would like to), so here’s what I’ve got planned for this year!

(By the way, if you want to go and make yourself a brew at this point, please feel free.  I’ve got plenty more to say and you might need a break! 🤣)

  • Birthday giveaways … oh yes, not just one giveaway …
  • 10% discount off my patterns and books
  • I’m encouraging everyone to start a new pair of Basic 4ply Socks!  It doesn’t matter at all if you’re brand new to sock knitting or you’ve been knitting for years, I just love the idea of the collective energy and connection of us all knitting a pair of socks together!

Winwick Mum Sockalong birthday giveaway

Every year, I get to do this to share my good fortune in having something I love be such a important part of my life, and every year I think how fortunate I am to be able to even think about it!

Now, in previous years I’ve had one giveaway with two prizes but this year, it’s the 10th birthday so I really should do something a bit special, right?  You are absolutely right!

This year, there will be 10 giveaways over 10 days!

I’m quite giddy (and not a little daunted) at the thought of that but why not?  You don’t have a 10th birthday every day!

I’ve got lots of prizes which I will be making up into surprise bundles to send to the winner of each day’s draw, and so that you can see what might be coming your way, here are some photos!

Woohoo!  What do you think of all that?!  There’s about £300 worth of stuff there, and I’m going to give it all away!

Assorted colourful yarns and knitting supplies on a wooden table. Includes West Yorkshire Spinners and Wool Warehouse yarns, knitting book, tape measures, and mugs with playful designs, creating a cozy, crafty vibe.

Let me show you what I’ve got!

💜  My lovely friends at West Yorkshire Spinners have gifted four balls of Signature 4ply yarn in the Winwick Mum colourways Wildflower, Seascape, Summer Sunset and Spring Green, as well as the Winwick Mum Collection pattern book and the Seasons pattern book, with designs of each of the eight colourways in the Winwick Mum collection

Four balls of colourful yarn, arranged in a row, sit below two pattern booklets: one featuring striped socks and a person, the other with vibrant sock designs.

Signature 4ply is perfect for beginner knitters – it’s very forgiving of being unravelled (and we all know the best way to learn is by making mistakes 🙂 ), it’s got good stitch definition so you can see what you’re doing and count rows easily, and it washes and wears very well.  I love it!

💜  More lovely friends at Wool Warehouse have gifted ten balls of their Yarnsmiths Merino sock yarn which is also brilliant for beginners – it’s got a different feel to the Signature 4ply as it’s made with merino fibre (WYS is spun with Blue-faced Leicester, our UK home-grown equivalent to Merino) so that makes it beautifully soft but the nylon content makes it hard-wearing enough for socks …

Ten balls of colourful Yarnsmiths Merino Sock Superwash yarn displayed on a wooden surface. Colours include blue, orange, green, and multicolour.

Oh, just look at all those colours!  I’ve got mix of solid colours and prints which are from L-R: top –  Platinum, Denim Days, Muted Earth, Moss Green, Hazy Dreams and Magenta; bottom – Pumpkin, Teal, Tutti Frutti and Berry Burst.

What else?

💜  I’ve got tins from Emma Ball, perfect for storing needles and accessories …

Colourful tin boxes with whimsical animal illustrations are displayed on a wooden surface. Designs include penguins, birds, and a highland cow, creating a playful and artistic tone by artist Emma Ball.

💜  I’ve got tiny tins with light bulb pins which are great for counting rows, holding dropped stitches, impromptu stitch markers and countless other jobs …

Wooden surface with colourful slide-top tins and hat-shaped markers. Tins in blue, pink, gold, teal, and purple encircle multicoloured markers.

💜  I’ve got a couple of mugs, because knitting is thirsty work …

Two mugs on a wooden table. One says, "Please Go Away I'm Knitting," with colorful text, and the other, resembling yarn, says, "Knitting Keeps Me From Unravelling."

The mug on the left was kindly gifted by Peter at Promotional Mugs (formerly Express Mugs).

💜  tape measures for measuring foot circumference and length (ha! did you think I wasn’t going to mention the Sock Stitch Calculation in this post?)

Seven colorful retractable tape measures in black, green, yellow, light blue, pink, blue, and red are arranged on a wooden surface, with one tape extended.

💜  I’ve got two signed copies of Super Socks, the paperback version of the online Sockalong tutorials …

Cover of the book "Super Socks" by Christine Perry, featuring colorful knitted socks on a wooden floor. The tone is warm and inviting.

The book contains the same information as the online tutorials but is set out by needle type rather than across sock sections as the online tutorials are.  It’s a good big size to prop open with your brew and there are pages at the back to make notes, which is a useful thing to do, especially if you’re going to adjust the pattern for yourself or knit for other people (and you don’t have a copy of Project Super Socks yet 😉 ).

There is just one sock pattern in there – the Basic 4ply Socks pattern – given in both 4ply and 6ply versions, and this is because this is a book for beginners.  The point of the book is that it’s a tutorial, the best way I could think of for you and I to sit together and knit a pair of socks without confusing everything by trying to cram lots of other patterns in there as well.  You can go and find other patterns at any time, but my intention with Super Socks and the Sockalong tutorials is to help you knit your first pair so that you understand what you are doing and you feel like a sock knitting superstar when you put them on your feet!

If you want to see inside the book, take a look at this post here as it shows you what’s in there and how the book was put together.  If you want to see the online tutorials as well so that you can compare, and check out my writing style if you’re a Winwick Mum newbie, you can find those here.

💜  and three signed copies of Project Super Socks, the latest addition to the Super Socks family – a project notebook where you can store all your measurements and notes for up to 50 pairs of socks (any pattern, not just the Basic 4ply Socks!), making it easy to refer to it again whenever you to want to so that you can either repeat the socks or remember what you did to make changes for the next pair.

Three purple booklets titled "Project Super Socks: Master Plan" are fanned on a wooden surface. The design features scattered white sock illustrations.

💜  I’ve got two gift vouchers worth £10 each – one for Wool Warehouse and one for Black Sheep Wools.  Wool Warehouse is an online store so this is a website only voucher, but you can use the Black Sheep Wools one in the Craft Barn as well as online.

and finally,

💜   there’s an exclusive Winwick Mum bookmark and Winwick Mum Sockalong pin badge for each winner.  This enamelled purple badge is ideal for project bags and also for wearing to festivals so that you can spot other Sockalongers.

Phew!  I’m very excited to be able to send so many sock-related gifts out this year!  What do you think?  Keep reading for your chance to enter to win!

Before that, though, there’s more!

10% discount off my patterns and books

You can use the code BIRTHDAY10 for 10% off all my patterns here on the blog, on Ravelry and Payhip, and the same code will work for the Super Socks books and WYS pattern books on the blog* (see below for *).

This code is valid from today (3 May 2025) until 31 May 2025.

You can see my published designs on the Patterns and Printables page.  Not all of them are available in the blog shop but the ones included in this offer are all on Ravelry and Payhip.

I’m encouraging everyone to start a new pair of Basic 4ply Socks!

Oh, let’s just do it!  Let’s cast on en masse and fill the world with fabulous sock knitting energy!

If it’s your first pair, you can check out the Winwick Mum Sockalong tutorials for help with choosing yarn and needles to start with, then working out your size and knitting the socks all the way down to the seam-free toes.  If it’s not your first pair, join in anyway!  You know I always encourage everyone to have a sock on the go for emergency situations (never be caught without your sock in your bag just in case!), and it’s the perfect time to cast on.  It’s always the perfect time to cast on … I am unapologetically biased and want everyone to knit socks! 🤣

You might be needing a lie down after all this never mind a brew, so let me get on and tell you how to enter the giveaway!

For the last nine years, I’ve been asking you to tell me how many pairs of Sockalong socks you knitted since the last Sockalong birthday.  I’ll never know for sure how many pairs of socks have actually been knitted using the Basic 4ply Socks pattern and tutorials, of course, but I have so enjoyed keeping a rough count over the years – plus I hope that it shows those teetering on the edge of their own sock adventures that it really is possible! – so this year I will be continuing the tradition of the Annual Sock Count.

So far, the running total through the blog stands at 21,336 pairs, which is absolutely unbelievable and never something I ever expected on that January afternoon when I announced I’d be writing sock tutorials!  I wonder how many more have been knitted this year?!  It’s not a competition with previous years, it’s just a bit of fun (and might also tell me how close we are to really taking over the world with hand-knit socks 🙂 )

To enter the giveaway, please comment how many pairs of Basic 4ply Socks (not other patterns, please) you have knitted since May 2024.  Don’t worry if you’re still making your first pair or are about to cast on, just write that information and your comment will count too.  And then, because I would love to know how far our sock connections reach, please tell me where you are in the world!

Please do remember not to post any personal details, just a general idea of where you are is great.  I’m going to create a map so that we can see where we all are – I’m very excited about the idea of that too!

There will be one draw every day for 10 days from 4 May 2025 until 13 May 2025 and the winner will be announced after 8pm BST every day on the giveaway winners post which I will post tomorrow.  There will be just one post with winners’ names so please check back to see if your name is on there.  I have split the prizes into ten prizes of about £30 each, and they’re already packed up and ready to send, so each winner will be getting a box of surprises … anyone would think there’s a birthday party going on 🤣!

Only comments on this post will be entered into the draw, and please only post once!  Every comment that is on this post will be entered every day of the giveaway so you don’t need to comment multiple times – I’ll be going through them every day and will delete extra entries so that everyone has a fair chance of winning.  If you win, your name will come out of future draws.

I am happy to post the prizes anywhere in the world, so don’t feel that you can’t be part of this because you don’t live in the UK.  I think you can choose to leave your comment as “anonymous” if you don’t have a WordPress account, but don’t forget to put your name in the comment so that when I post the winners I’ll be able to identify you so that you can get in touch for your prize (and please do come back to check if you’re a winner)!  And finally, don’t worry that your comment doesn’t show straight away – the comments are set for me to check them before they upload to the blog to make sure that no spam gets through so they are all safely stored in my blog messages until I’ve seen them.  I’ll make sure they’re all uploaded on time!

Happy birthday Sockalong, here’s to many more years of socking all over the world!

*This is for UK sales only, I’m afraid – I don’t post books overseas due to customs, delivery and tax charges, and unfortunately, Amazon don’t offer discount codes for books although they do choose to discount the books when it suits them!

I have made one and a half pairs of your basic 4ply socks since May 2024. Second sock being slowly made. Ive always been so grateful for your explanations and instructions, which helped me to get to grips with the heel turn on my first pair of socks. I still marvel that it was me that actually made them!

I have followed you for a long time, quite possibly since the begining. I’ve got your book, some needles and enough wool to open a shop. But I’ve still to make my 1st pair. I think tomorrow (4th May) is going to be a bit of a washout in Norfolk so I’m going to treat myself to an hour or 2 to dust off the book, fire up my laptop and watch a tutorial amd make a start. Oh and order the super sock project book too, how did I miss that!!
Thank you for all you’ve done, what an amazing success story. Xx

I’ve knit about 8 pairs since last May. I always have a pair of socks in my handbag. I’m in Pontypool, South Wales, UK

  26. Happy birthday. A friend asked me to knit her a pair of socks. She’s not a knitter & so didn’t know how challenging this was. I was on the point of giving up when I found your wonderful site & videos. After a few false starts I completed my first pair & haven’t stopped knitting them since. I have made 12 pairs of socks

  27. James Brewer says:

Congratulations on your 10th anniversary Christine! Thanks for guiding us all into the wonderful world of sock knitting! I’ve done 3 pairs of the 4-ply socks in the past year, mostly knitted here in Ipswich (Suffolk)

  28. Claire Billington says:

This is exciting! I’ve knitted 2 pairs – happy with one, not impressed with the other but I did learn a lot in carrying on and not giving up. Did them both on DPNs but going to brace the magic loop life TODAY! Thanks so much for your encouragement and for making things so much easier than they might at first seem.

  29. Heather Morran says:

I’ve only made one pair of Winwick adult socks this year, so it’s about time I cast on another!

And a massive thank you for giving me my sock knitting skills. I’ve helped people at work to knit and one in particular who couldn’t quite get the heel turn. I sent her your link and showed her in person at lunch. A few weeks later she came in with a beautifully knitted sock and it was lovely to see her pride and joy in it all. I can’t imagine how that must feel x thousands!

    • Monica Kemp says:

Whoohoo happy 10th birthday. I’m Monica in Fremantle – Western Australia. Autumn has just arrived and perfect for sock knitting. 🧶 I’ve only knitted 1 pair in the last year and it was for my husband in the lovely WYS woodpigeon yarn. I am getting together with my knitting buddies tomorrow for a Crafternoon and will get casting on for myself to keep my tootsies warm in winter. ❄️ Just had my flu jab and nights are drawing in now. Keep up your fabulous work Christine and happy knitting everyone!

  30. Ratbag says:

Happy 10th Birthday! Without Winwick Mum, I don’t think I’d be knitting socks. The knit and natter group is my go-to place knitty inspiration.
I have no idea how many basic socks I’ve knit since 2024. Maybe 20? Maybe 40?
Good luck in the fabulous prize draw everyone.

  31. Kathryn Beasley says:

Happy 10th Birthday Christine for the sock along ! I want to say a BIG thank you for teaching me how to knit socks, which I had never attempted before because I knew I wouldn’t be able to stay sane using dpns! Little did I know about the short circular needles….until I stumbled across your blog. I joined the sockalong group…and tried, but failed with tears on my first sock, but with your help and from lovely members too I persevered using your brilliant videos on YouTube I finally made my first pair! So for that I say a BIG Thank you! Have now made 6 pairs and thrown away all shop bought ones as I hate the toe seams and too tight elastic cuffs! Have a great time with your 10th anniversary…..Hoping to be able to find time away from the gardening tasks I have to cast on and join in on the sockalong! Thanks again Christine! 🥰

  32. Eleanor Martin says:

Hope you’re feeling guilty Christine – you’ve turned me into a knitting sockaholic 🤣 So far I’ve knitted 2 pairs of basic socks this year (with another cast on in sparkly white this morning in celebration of 10th sockalong birthday 🎉 I’ve also knitted several of your other sock patterns this year, but know they’re not included in the count. Happy 10th Birthday Christine. It was you that started me on the journey of, what is now, a continual knitter of socks and nothing else! I can’t count how many pairs I’ve knitted this year! 43. Maxine Togneri says:

Happy 10th Birthday Christine. All the accolades you have received are well deserved. I have had the pleasure of speaking to you on zoom and I must say I was so nervous that day. After 2 minutes it felt like I was speaking to an old friend with a shared passion. This year I have only knitted 15 basic socks although I have done some lacy and other patterns, just to keep it different .
Last night I picked out a lovely yarn from hennypennymakes from their it’s a criminal club the colour way is a murder is announced. The sun is shining in Saltcoats so what better time to cast on a new pair of socks. Sending you love and here’s to another 10 xx

  75. Susan says:

    Happy Sockalong 10th Birthday.
I started knitting my first pair of socks last year which took me several months to complete, due to setting a personal challenge to complete my unfinished objects along with some charity knitting (I’m notorious for having several projects on the go!)
I started my second pair of socks in April with the 2nd toe shaping remaining; Which I intend to complete within the next week.
I have a spare set of sock needles and will be casting on a third pair today with the aim of completing by the end of May (28 days)
Im officially becoming a sock knitting addict as it’s so portable and now I keep my sock project bag in my handbag and it appears wherever I am.
I will be eternally grateful for the support, advice, hints and tips in sock knitting provided by Sockalong Founder Christine and fellow Sockalongers.
    Happy Sock Knitting everyone

  78. Michelle Dare says:

Happy 10th birthday! 🎂 Thank you for all the wonderful news skills I’ve acquired. I love knitting socks as I can spoil a beautifully knitted garment with my poor sewing skills and doesn’t it feel wonderful to wear hand knitting socks? Not so many Sockalong socks this year as I’ve been adventurous with other patterns, love the easy lace pattern, so it’s 6 for me here in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Away in Saltburn and hunting down a yarn shop for contrast stripes for some cricket socks for my husband as I can’t face knitting 2 white socks! Have a wonderful day. x

  79. Alix says:

Happy Birthday! I’m so pleased I got recommended Winwick Mum to start my sock knitting journey! I’ve also told lots of people about it now, so spreading the sock knitting love! <3

I’ve only made 2 pairs of basic socks since last year… but I’ve made a few more complicated ones with colour-work or cables, and a good few dk socks (my favourite!!) 🩷 I am in the North East of England! 🩷

  80. Mel says:

Just casting on pair 4 of the 4 ply pattern (I’ve done another two pairs using the dk pattern).

Happy 10th birthday! I’m about to cast on my first pair of 4ply socks today.

  82. Ann Smout says:

I have knit 8 pairs on the past year. My mum taught me to knit and was the family sock knitter. I tried to knit socks a couple of times years ago and couldn’t get going with them. I had no incentive, as Mum’s socks were fantastic. When she died 2 years ago, I vowed I’d learn to knit socks when I retired. I’ve now been retired 18 months and have been happily knitting socks since and all because of your basic 4ply sock pattern and brilliant tutorials. I had no idea it was so simple and so addictive – though I’m glad I didn’t come across them sooner because I’m still wearing socks my mum made me. And I live on the Isle of Wight. Thanks so much Christine. x

  85. Catherine D says:

Happy 10th birthday Christine! I’ve made my first 2 pairs of basic socks since May 2024 thanks to your superb online tutorials and Super Socks book. I never thought I’d manage them but I’ve done it thanks to your help, and constant encouragement in your blog.
Took my socks to hospital to occupy myself while waiting for minor surgery, blissfully unaware they would keep me overnight. So I had my essential socks, if nothing else! Keep up the great work encouraging us new knitters. Best wishes from Catherine in Heywood, Lancs

  86. Joanne Conway says:

Happy birthday! I’ve done 5 pairs of the basic socks in the last year (so that’s 10 socks for the 10th birthday!). I don’t do any other patterns as the instructionsa are just so easy to follow, and am ready to cast on to join in the celebrations! I’m in Cheshire.

  87. Caroline Hyland says:

Thank you Christine for your amazing Basic 4ply sock pattern. I always have a pair on the go and have knitted 10 pairs since last May. I live in West Sussex but my sock knitting travels everywhere with me!

  88. Corina says:

Congratulations! It was your tutorials that helped me getting started knitting socks a few years ago. I usually have pair on my needles now. I’ve made only 1 pair of basic socks since May 2024. I’m currently working on your easy cable socks and close to decreasing for the toes. I live near Gouda in the Netherlands.

  89. Denise Bowers says:

My total is only 3, but I do other patterns as well. I tend to use thus pattern for the WYS Christmas self striping yarn, so the plain pattern shows off the yarn

  93. Jan Carciofo says:

Thank you, gor your patterns and books. They have helped me not only to knit socks but found a renewed love for knitting. I have knitted 3 pairs if your basic sick pattern. I also have your Courhie Shawl on the go!

And of course, I actually made the January Sockalong Trailblazer socks for myself – first for myself for a long time! I’m in sunny Criccieth, North Wales.

  98. Jennifer McGivern says:

The last time I knitted socks, by the time I was half way through the second sock the first one had been attacked by moth.
Your enthusiasm for sock knitting has spurred me on to try again, so I will be casting on to join you in your birthday celebrations.
    Happy birthday, Jennifer McGivern. Surrey

  99. Laura Speer says:

I have knitted one pair since finding these groups a few months ago. I started knitting socks about 16 years ago because commercial socks didn’t fit. Your patterns are well-written and the support you provide is very helpful and uplifting! I also enjoy the FB groups – very talented knitters. Here’s to more comfy socks! I live in Arkansas in the US.

  100. Adele Sullivan says:

Just on my first pair, using your Super Socks book😃 I am in a village near Oxford UK😃

  101. Jeanette Kettlewell says:

Happy 10th Sockalong birthday, Christine! I only managed to knit one pair of basic socks since last year. I gifted the pair to my 25-year-old daughter, who loves hand-knitted socks. I have a grand-nephew due in July, who will be the recipient of the pair I cast on today. I am in South Carolina, USA, and I think I have been a Sockalonger since 2017. I check into the Winwick Mum FB groups daily to see what my worldwide friends are up to. It has been a delight to have made these long-distance friendships, all thanks to you!

  102. ShellyString says:

I have your Treasure Socks pattern queued for my next cast on. I queued it the other day with no knowledge of the Sock along and never having knit one of your socks patterns before. I have always considered myself a shawl knitter. Sure, I knit socks, but usually vanilla socks to show off the patterned yarn I’m using (although there have been a few pairs of patterned socks over the years). This year, however, I signed up to Sock Madness on Ravelry and have been well and truly bitten by the patterned sock knitting bug! Last year I knit 44 pairs of vanilla socks (I challenged myself to knit 36) and so far this year I have knit 15 pairs, only 2 of which have been vanilla. I’m obsessed to say the least! Congratulations on a tenth year of Sockalongs (no need to include me in your lovely prize draw: I don’t think I’ve met the requirements anyway and I don’t need to add any more yarn to my collection at the moment). I wish you well for the next ten!

  103. Alison Hunt says:

I have knitted 2pairs since May last year , but have lost count of how many I have done since I started my sock journey in 2018
    I’m in Newark Nottinghamshire

  104. Sandra Kendall says:

    A very Happy 10th Birthday!
2 pairs of basic socks this year. I’ve been very busy doing other things and busy test knitting other patterns 😉
Keep up the good work Christine

    Sandra Kendall
    North East England

  105. Carole says:

8 pairs of basic socks so far – and there’s no way I would have managed without the Sockalong tutorials so thank you! Time to fast on another pair soon I think.

  106. Jean Laing says:

Hi and Happy Birthday🥳, I have knitted 5 pairs of basic 4 ply socks since last May, and also 3 pairs of the basic 8ply for hubby, which he loves. I am from Duns in the Scottish Borders and just love knitting socks, my sock drawer is overflowing with socks!!
    Keep up the good work

  107. Hazel Clark says:

    Happy 10th Birthday Sockalong.
Many thanks for the tutorials which gave me the confidence to start knit socks again.
I have finished my first pair in almost 45 years. The very first pair I made were for my then boyfriend who used to like wool sock for wearing with his motorbike boots, and my Mum -in – Law was the tutor at the time!
I’m halfway through my second pair of basic 4 ply socks now, so 3 whole socks finished this year.

Thank you to Christine for the hard work in putting together the pattern and tutorials and the enthusiasm, but thanks also to all on the FB sock group for help and advice too.
Happy Birthday from sunny (for now) Pembrokeshire.

  108. Amanda H says:

    Many socky congratulations Christine.
I tried other methods and found Super Socks has guided me all the way – especially those pesky gussets! Am half way through pair no 4 since May 2024 and live in North London 😊

  109. Jude Doherty says:

CONGRATULATIONS and Happy 10th birthday Sockalong Christine!! I bought your first book and have knitted about 18prs and am now on the 4th pair since early last year, alternating between Lucy’s Crochet blankets. Keep up the good work.

  110. Fran L says:

I’ve cast on Christine’s Easy Cable socks, using Yarnsmiths Merino Sock yarn. My second pair of socks cast on in two days, because I forgot that today was the sock-a-long cast on ! Oh well, you can’t have too many socks. I’ve knitted 4 pairs of basic 4ply socks since last May. I like to have a pair on the go.

  111. Dawn Prowse says:

Happy Birthday!! I’m casting on my 8th pair today, first pair completed in June ’24. I’m still making mistakes, and learning from them. I’d almost given up on socks until I came across these tutorials and short circulars. Thank you so much Christine, I really couldn’t have done it without you!

  112. Kathy Jones says:

I started knitting with sockalong 2 years ago and have many pairs myself and knit for friends and raffles, I’ve made 22 pairs since May 2024, I’m addicted to sock knitting and sock yarn. I live in Manchester UK

  113. Joan Field says:

Happy Birthday. I bought the Super Socks book in March last year. I found it easy to follow. Since last May I’ve knitted 17 pairs of socks using the 4 ply basic pattern. Some for me, a pair of man size 12s and a few shorties. I always have a pair on the needles these days.😁😁

  114. Stephanie Edie says:

Happy 10th Birthday from Rugby, England!! I’ve knitted 1 pair of basic socks since May last year, but many more of different patterns as well! I’m forever grateful that I found your tutorial and started on that first pair 10 years ago – I never felt comfortable knitting big items (felt like I was all elbows!) so was great to be able to knit on small circulars. My Mum thought I was mad to knit socks, but then she saw how lovely they were and I passed the bug onto her. Unfortunately she has recently been diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor, but the muscle memory is still there to be knitting a pair of basic socks….

  115. Vickie Hoffman says:

Happy Happy Birthday! 🎉🎂 Thank you for sharing your great knitting skills and knowledge! Your instructions are so easy to understand. Only one pair of socks for me in the last year but currently working on a pair of ankle socks for my daughter. Happy knitting!

  116. Rhona says:

Thank you Christine for showing me how to knit socks and to think I nearly gave up trying. I bought a kit whilst on holiday about 9 years ago but could not get passed casting on, having never used DPNs before. It ended up in a cupboard for over 6 years until I saw a Black Sheep Wool interview with you on YouTube and that was the start of my obsession ! Since May 2024 I have knitted 4 pairs of basic 4ply socks and recently successfully completed your easy lacy pattern. Thank you again and very best wishes for the future. I live in Dunoon.

  117. Judith Provan says:

Happy 10th birthday! I’ve made 4 pairs of basic 4ply socks since May and in total over 30+ which have all been gifted to family members. I have never made a pair of socks for myself and I have decided to cast on a birthday pair this evening using Seascape 4ply and they will be mine. I’m from County Durham.

  118. Rachel Mills says:

Since May 2024 I have knitttd two pairs and casting on a pair today in Gloucestershire

  119. Carrie Copeland says:

5 pairs!! And today I’m casting on for my new son-in-law! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I feel so blessed to know how to knit socks with confidence! Thank you, thank you! I’m from Starkville, Mississippi, United States! Happy Birthday!!! Thank you, thank you!!

  120. Amanda Collings says:

Happy 10th birthday 🎁 from Ipswich, Suffolk ⭐️ I’ve knitted many , many pairs of socks. However just thinking about the basic 4ply pattern, I have knitted approx 35 pairs since last year. I love my hand knitted socks – it’s all I wear! My hubby loves them too, but he prefers the 8ply pattern – good luck to all those starting their first pair – it’s a love affair ❤️🦋

  121. Nada Ranson says:

    Happy 10th birthday 🎉
    Hi from Perth, Australia 🇦🇺
I’m so excited to be starting my first pair of socks, well second actually. First pair knitted in wool 🤦🏻‍♀️ about 40 years ago and I can’t believe that I gave them to an op shop. So now I will have a new first pair 🙌

  122. Ori says:

I think I knitted four pairs of them. And also I knitted several pairs with your gorgeous heel construction. It’s the best heel for my feet. Thank you so much for your wonderful patterns. I’m from Germany by the way and I learned to knit from my grandma

  123. Susan Hogg says:

Happy birthday! One pair of Basic 4 ply socks since May 2024 but several other patterned pairs too! I’m from Daviot, Aberdeenshire in north east Scotland.

  124. Julia Evans says:

Zero socks, just about to cast on my first pair. I’m a crocheter rather than a knitter, but you’ve inspired me to ‘have a go’. I’ve collected quite a lot of hand dyed sock yarns, which I use to crochet with, so I’m going to use last years advent with 20g in each day, starting on day one and see how far I get … how exciting:) They will be ‘odd socks’, probably in more ways than one, but Happy 10th Sock-along Birthday and thank you for the inspiration. I’m in Ulverston, UK 🙂

  125. Alison says:

I have made many pairs of socks in the past but never the basic sock pattern until today, I’ll be casting on this evening.
I’m knitting in Glasgow at the moment but home is Preston.
    Happy 10th birthday Sockalong. 🧦

  126. Carol Leak says:

    Happy 10th Birthday 🙂
I’ve knitted 13 pairs of basic socks in the last year.
    I live in Derby UK.
I do knit other sock patterns occasionally but the basic is my favourite. Most of my socks go to a charity run by a friend and yoga teacher. I am constantly asked for socks by my yoga friends.

  127. Corinne says:

Happy 10th birthday! Wishing you many more sockalongs.
I’ve only made one pair of basic socks this last year mainly because my arthritic hands tend to cramp up with the smaller needles but I’m forever thankful to you for showing me how to make socks.

  128. Teresa McNamara says:

Thank you. So excited to join this year’s sockalong. Not that I need any excuse to knit socks. This year I have made 4 pairs of basic 4ply socks along with a few pairs of trainer socks. Cast on the new pair today x

  129. Cecile says:

Happy 10th birthday! I’ve knitted 2 pairs using your basic pattern this year (also 5 pairs with your other patterns but I know they don’t count!). Yhank you for all you, it’s great to be part of your big sock-family! Cécile, Staffordshire (I’m French but I also became British a few months ago!)

  130. Karen Beckwith says:

I’ve made another 8 pairs. A few have been children’s size as I would like to get the grandchildren into hand crafted socks! My next cast on will be pair 50!

  131. Happy Birthday! Such lovely gifts!! 🎁
I’ve knit many pairs of socks including your Easy Mosaic sock pattern but this will be my first Basic Socks! I’m excited to cast on. I’m in West Virginia, USA
    Thank you.

  132. Jacqui D says:

Happy Birthday Sockalong! I’ve only made 2 pairs of basic socks this year (but have also tried some patterned ones too) – obviously time to cast on a new pair!

  133. Kim W says:

I started your patten some years ago, completely messed it up and put the socks in the naughty box. I think I am ready to try again. Happy 10th Birthday 🥳 🧦 I am in the United States

  134. Irene Shilling says:

Happy 10th birthday! I have knitted just 1 pair of the basic sock pattern this year. I’m very new and very slow at sock knitting. p.s. I’m from East Sussex in the UK

  135. Claire Pullinger says:

Congratulations on 10 incredible years of Winwick Mum! I’ve been alongside you for just over half of that time and have become a sock knitting addict! The last year has seen another 3 pairs of the Basic Sock pattern on and off my needles with several varied patterns in between. Have a wonderful time celebrating xx

  136. Sam says:

I love following your various platforms and the idea of knitting my own pair of socks is a real ambition of mine. However as a complete novice knitter I’ve never managed it yet but that’s my goal! This may be the year I cast on in celebration of your 10th Birthday 🥳 I’m in Chester, UK

  137. Gillian Roberts says:

Happy 10th Birthday – the basic pattern got me started on sock knitting now I can’t stop. 1 basics completed since May 2024 (with the next just on the needles). I’m in Nottingham

  138. Rosy Griffith says:

Thanks for your sockalong inspiration which I discovered during lockdown seeking a new challenge. Delighted with the simplicity of the instructions though my kichener stitch still needs work! Knit for my lovely yoga teacher who has cold feet. Thrilled with the West Yorkshire connection which reminds me of home now I’m far away in Devon. Tried the soft merino too which is great to work with. Manage two pairs a year so two and a half pairs since last May. I was ill in spring and could it but back to it now and all set to cast on some merino helical socks. I like a new challenge. Grateful for your inspiration and love the blog posts every week.

  139. Claire says:

    Happy 10th Birthday!
I’ve just cast on my 5th pair this year!
    West Yorkshire

  140. Treva Epple says:

Happy Sockalong Anniversary! I can’t thank you enough for this gift you have shared with all of us! I have knit 26 pair total, but 5 PAIR IN THIS LAST YEAR, so my Birthday Party cast on today, a pair of shorties in WYS seascape, will be pair #27. I am now living with a serious case of chemo brain, but somehow, despite that, the pattern just clicked in my head and I can whip along on those emergency socks and it is all right in my head now! I am so thankful for this gift you have given us. I appreciate all of your blog posts and all of your sock knowledge and your love of knitting and teaching all things sock!!
A HUGE thank you from Montrose, Minnesota here in the USA!

  141. Jennifer Bayley says:

I’ve made 1 pair of basic socks in the last year! I love all your patterns, they’re so easy to follow and always fun to knit!

  142. Elizabeth Klynsmith says:

Thank you Christine for the great inspiration and patterns, and congratulations on 10 years! I’ve made 10 pairs of basic 4 ply socks since last year. Today (I’m in South Australia) I spent much of the day in the ED with my son who is quite unwell- I was glad to have my emergency sock kit with me and today I finished that pair of socks. Needless to say, I cast on another pair on returning home. I’m part of a lovely Winwick Mum inspired knitting group here in SA which has been going around 9 years now, and we’ve all become good friends.
Lovely to think there are groups like us all over the world.

    • Magda Fogg says:

      Hi Christine
I’m Magda from Holyport, Berkshire. Happy 10th sockalong birthday and I hope you have many more.
I’ve knitted only one pair of basic 4ply this year but I’m casting on a sock tonight.
      Happy sock knitting everyone.

  143. Nichola Collinge says:

    Happy 10th birthday 🥳

What an amazing achievement, all the socks and joy spread over the years. I couldn’t knit anything but a square (or rectangle) when I first found the sockalong. I’ve done 3 complete pairs this year, 5 awaiting their pair and 4/5 of those on the needles! I’m also about to cast on some WYS Christmas yarn to get ahead of the season!

I also gained confidence. If I could follow the sockalong and make socks, I could make anything if I just do what the pattern says. I’ve made hats, gloves, wrist warmers, I’m starting my first jumper and I’ve written some patterns of my own. All because a nice lady in Cheshire showed me I could make socks, see stitches, and feel proud of myself.

Thank you Christine and well done! X

  144. Candice McCall says:

Happy 10th! I finished my first sock project last month – knit 3 and chose best 2 as I messed up Kitchener Stitch on one. Ugh! No local yarn stores or classes so your books and tutorials are such immense help. I am in north central Florida. You awoke a knitting passion in me. Thanks ever so much!

  145. Mariangela Marshall says:

Happy 10th Sockalong Birthday! I am just finishing up my first pair of socks since last May in time to cast on today. Looking forward to knitting many more socks this year.

  146. Carol Williamsom says:

Happy anniversary! I just had to count my pairs of basic shortie socks – four pairs – most of the rest of the socks I’ve knitted have been more exciting ones, like your Maze mosaic – still my favourite! I’m also casting on, for the anniversary, not another pair of Basic, but your LikeMinded socks, in WYS blackcurrant bomb. Thanks, Christine, you’re an inspiration!
I’m in the central Algarve, Portugal, for your map.
But for mailing purposes, I have daughters coming to visit this summer from just down the road from you in Leigh, and also from Edinburgh.

  147. Colette Foley says:

Christine, Super Socks taught me to knit socks! and then I got More Super Socks. I love hand knitted socks although most of my time in the past year has been dedicated to figuring out how to make a sweater to fit properly, I did get a pair of Rudy socks completed and I have a pair of Jay Eyelet So ks on the needles. I wiy try to finish them during Sock Along. Congratulations on 10 years of SockAlong and thank you for the gift of Super Socks. I am from Sycamore, IL and one of the ladies in my knitting group at Wool & Co in South Elgin, IL uses Super Socks for all her socks.

  148. Meg says:

Happy Birthday, I am just starting my first sock in the time period. They never quite fit correctly so I’m hoping the sock a long will fix that.

  149. Lynn says:

Happy birthday Sockalong. I’ve made 12 pairs for friends who own a guest house and sell the socks on behalf of Lizard RNLI

  150. Lee Kane says:

Hello and happy birthday! I stumbled upon the Sockalong learn to knit socks videos and thought this makes knitting socks look possible for me. My previous attempts resulted in a mess of tangled yarn and DPNs but the Sockalong was amazing! Since May 2024 I have knitted 11 pairs using the basic pattern, 4 I adapted into shorties but used the same pattern. I have just cast my 12th pair and am using WYS Signature 4 ply in Blue Lagoon. I am loving it!

    • Trudi says:

On my first pair, ,arrived at the heel. Haven’t knitted in ages, so far so good. I’m in a chilly North Essex.

  151. Tenna Olsen says:

Hi, I am in California USA. Socks are my favorite knit. WYS sock yarn is my favorite yarn. I’ve knitted 4 pairs of socks since May 2024

  152. Eileen says:

Happy 10th birthday! I’ve made 3 pairs of socks – 2 for my husband who has size 11 feet and needed large, comfortable socks to cover dressings for a long-term foot problem. Your instructions for sizing up the basic pattern really worked and he loves them! I also made the socks from the Christmas 2024 pattern as a gift but didn’t finish until February. I’m in Sussex. Thank you for all your help and support.

  153. Donna Rowan says:

Happy 10th Birthday Sockalong. Discovered your website and blog last year after buying sock yarn at Wool@junction13, having been inspired by a friend to knit woollen socks for a trip to colder climes where woollen socks were recommended. I’m now on my 4th pair of the basic 4ply (2 each for my husband and me). Have ventured to the 8ply (again for both of us) and love the result for both. Looking forward to trying some mixed colours. Thank you Christine for being such an inspiration. I live in Stafford, UK.

  154. Sue Wooldridge says:

Congratulations on 10 years! I found you two years ago but have only manage one pair of basic socks so time to step up the tempo. I’ve bought your Super Sock book and a ball of WYS Seascape and just about to cast on. I live in SE Cornwall.
    Sue Wooldridge

  155. Catherine says:

    Happy Birthday!
I’ve made quite a few basic socks before 2024.
Just bought the WYS kingfisher yarn and I’m now plucking up the courage to try the easy lace pattern from my More Super Socks book !
    Thank you from Suffolk, England

  156. Jo Schlanker says:

Happy 10th Birthday! My copy of Super Socks is well worn and much loved. I’ve tried other patterns, but I always come back to your basic 4ply. I’ve completed two pair this year, with another cast on.

    Jo – USA Missouri

  157. Mandy says:

Happy 10th Sockalong Birthday! I have been a knitter for several decades, but have never attempted sock knitting before now! I came across your blog and have decided that now is the time for me to get over that hurdle and add some wip’s to my ever growing collection! Lol
Thank you for your patterns and excellent tutorials and the wonderful community you’ve created! I live in Victoria, British Columbia Canada

  158. Angela says:

    Happy Birthday!!!
I started my first ever sock last year (June 24) – am happily addicted and think I’ve just cast on my 12th pair of basic 4ply socks this afternoon.
Thank you for helping me refrain from unraveling!!!
    Angela in very sunny Somerset!

  159. Sue says:

Oh no- I have never knit a pair of your socks although I have knit other patterns. I don’t know where I’ve been but I do know I am going to be spending the next week reading your blog and finding out more. I live in South Yorkshire and love the feel of hand knit wool socks.

  160. Lisa G. says:

Hi, writing from Quebec City, Canada! Thank you so much for your Sockalong and this fabulous contest! I’ve used your pattern in the past but not in the past year. Looking forward to casting on another pair soon!

  161. Helen says:

Happy birthday! I knitted my second ever pair of socks using your pattern — the first pair was like you, falling in love with some sock yarn in my LYS, and being offered a free pattern to encourage me to take the leap! Once I’d found your basic pattern I was hooked!
I am casting on a new pair today in honour of your birthday. I don’t think I’ve made any in the past year, although I have knitted several garments. Socks have also encouraged me to try out all sorts of knitting, without fear.

  162. Jennie Hiscock says:

So grateful to you for teaching me, and therefore giving me, five years of sock making pleasure. Without the Basic 4ply pattern I would never have had so much enjoyment. This year I’ve done 4 pairs of the basic pattern (several more out of the books as well). For the sockalong I’ve cast on a pair of shorties requested by my daughter for summer. Not sure if these will count ☺️ Happy Birthday 🥳

  163. Helle says:

Happy 10th Birthday from Greece. I’ve made 2 pairs of basic 4-ply socks. I’m so thankful for being part of this lovely group from the start. You have created something very special. Thank you for everything you have done.

  164. Anne Clark says:

Happy Birthday! Thank you for the pattern. I’ve made one pair of socks in the last year and have two half made.

  165. Jeanette Feather says:

Hi, I only discovered your amazing pattern this March while on a cruise, someone at a knit and natter group recommended trying it and now I’m hooked! Pardon the pun. I’m on my 4th pair since the end of March. I live on a Narrowboat near Skipton North Yorks and have recommended your pattern to all my crafty friends. It’s so easy to follow, thank you x

  166. Bev says:

    hi
thank you for getting me “addicted” to sock knitting! without your posts, patterns & emails I wouldn’t have achieved so many pairs since last year may2024 about 59 pairs the latest ones your easy lace pattern. always got 2 pairs on the go. a toddlerpaur from your pattern and now today a new basic pair! living in kent UK!

  167. Jan W says:

    Hi Christine
Congratulations 🥳 thank you for your support over the years. With your help I’ve progressed from plain 2 needle socks with a seam (!) to small circulars and patterned.
I’ve knitted 1 basic + 5 others with various patterns but always using your basic sock pattern as my basis since May 24, joining in with your January KAL. They are often admired 😀 and I’ve introduced quite a few folks to you & your tutorials.
    Enjoy this time.
    Yours, casting on again tonight!
    Am in West Dorset

  168. Elizabeth J says:

Hi i have knitted 2 pairs since May 2024. I pair for my brother in law to wear o chemo amd a pair for my daughter in law’smother in Canada . I am in Derbyshire.

  169. Dawn says:

Happy 10th birthday. I love your sock patterns, so easy to read. I’ve now made 12 pairs of 4ply basic socks and have another on the go!

  170. Christine Knowler says:

I sat and read this post this morning and thought ‘I haven’t really knitted and socks this past year’. There was a new baby born in the family so knitting for her took precedence. But after a count up I knitted 4 pairs of the basic sock and 6 pairs with contrast rib, heels and toes. So not so bad after all! I live in Hockley Essex.

  171. Ruth Hardill says:

    Hi
Congratulations on 10 years of Sockalong.
I have started another pair of socks since May 2024. This will be my second altogether using your pattern and Super Socks Books. I am a slow knitter and also do charity knitting.
I am now also an avid sock yarn collector so had better get knitting faster.
I live in Liversedge, West Yorkshire.

  172. Miranda says:

Hi Christine and a happy Sockalong to you here from Skelmersdale in Lancashire! I’ve only knitted 6 pairs of Basic Socks in the last 12 months but that’s because I’ve been busy enjoying knitting your other patterns as well…This year I’ll be casting on my very first pair using magic loop, using your ever-helpful blog instructions x

  173. vicki manterfield says:

you inspired me to knit a pair of socks last year. I down loaded your free basic sock pattern and start straight away. I have only got one nearly finished so not even a pair. I am an avid crocheter ( I think I have invented a new word) and so keep starting a new blanket every time one of my favourite bloggers puts out a new pattern. So I have a lovely pile of blankets and one part finished sock. Blame Lucy from attic 24 her canal blanket was the last one I finished. I still read your blog though and dream of a drawer full of home made socks, when I retire I may have more time!!!

  174. Jan Leathem says:

Kudos and congrats Christine! 10 years! Several months ago I was asking on your Facebook group some annoying newbie questions. I just couldn’t understand one concept in particular and was so frustrated until…you actually chimed in person and patiently helped me. Your explanation was just what I needed and I thank you for that. I have only completed one pair and yes, now have cast on for another. The delay is because I had been diagnosed with cancer and entered into a series of radiation and other medical stuff and sadly my knitting has been put on the back burner as it were. I am not cancer free at this point, but this celebration and your words have re-kindled the flame to continue and join in the fun. Thank you so very much, you are a gem and I wish you continued success and joy.

  175. Katherine Lymer says:

    Happy 10th Birthday!

Since May last year, I’ve knitted 2 of your Basic 4ply Pattern socks – the second being the pair that I finished yesterday! It’s my “go-to” pattern for my “emergency” / meeting / comfort WIP! Thank you so much for your sock knitting inspiration 🙂

  176. Alison B. says:

Hi and Happy Birthday, I have knitted 1 pair of basic socks and am currently knitting a DK pair for in my walking boots. Even if I use another pattern, I always refer back to Super Socks to help with something. Will be casting on for the sock a long with a special sock set I have in my stash. Thank you for the inspiration 🥰

  177. Gail L. says:

Hi Christine – I love your pattern, it’s the one I learned to knit socks with and it’s very seldom that I’ll deviate from it. Congratulations on your 10th Anniversary ….. it’s at this time each year where I pause and reflect on all the pairs I’ve knit using your pattern.

    From 1 May 2024 to 30 April 2025 – 24 pairs (5 shorties, 19 full length)
    AND
Since the start of my sock knitting journey in July 2016, I have knit 136 pairs!!!

Cheers to many more happy years of sock knitting. I live in Toronto, Canada

  178. Debra Halcrow says:

Happy birthday! I’m afraid I’ve only knitted two pairs of 4 ply socks in the past year, but that’s mainly because discovering Super Socks and the excellent photo tutorials when I was learning to knit was my entry point into a whole world of woolly delights! I’m now far too busy spinning, weaving, crocheting, felting and knitting to be able to knit as many socks as I’d like. Thank you for getting me hooked 😊

  179. Denise Murdoch Frost says:

    Happy Birthday!
I have been knitting socks for the last 8-9 yrs inspired by your book. Once started it’s very addictive .. this year I have knitted about 4 pairs in 4ply but have knitted others in different ply. Thanks Christine 🙏

  180. Kristina says:

Happy 10th birthday! I’m a fairly new sock knitter and since last May have made one pair of basic socks and one pair of shortie basic socks (not sure if they count)

I have only used your patterns for my socks and since starting have made 5 pairs and can see an improvement in each one!

  181. Nancy G. says:

I have knitted two pair since May 2024, knitting on the Central Coast of California in Santa Cruz. Happy 10th birthday!! 🎂

  182. Sue Gray says:

Happy Birthday Sockalong! I have enjoyed making 5 pairs of Winwick mum socks this year. 2 of which I have successfully reinforced the sole for my husband as he is hard on his footwear. Thank you for patterns and encouragement. Keep up the good work.
    Sue, East Yorkshire.

  183. Lin Tarrant says:

Happy Sockalong birthday!! I have made four complete pairs of basic socks since last May. As always, not easy forget today as it is my birthday too! I am in Taunton, Somerset and enjoying more lovely sunny weather.
Started a new pair of basic socks this week. Lovely giveaways all and your winners are going to be very happy.
Thank you and thank you for all your lovely posts over the last year and popping in on me too! xx

  184. Hazel Taylor says:

Happy 10th birthday. Since last May I have completed 4 pairs of basic socks which I mainly send to Knit for Peace charity. I like trying out different yarns mainly multi coloured ones which make for more interesting knitting and they seem to come up quicker! I go between DPNs and circular needles and sometimes use 2.5 mm and sometimes 2.75 mm. It always feels good to have a pair on the go as they can be done while watching TV or like you when waiting around in the car.
I am a Scottish girl now happily living in Warwickshire. Time to get casting on now.🧶

  185. Caroline Fawbert says:

Hi congratulations – you inspired me to make my first pair of socks a few years ago and now my husband, daughter and her husband, both stepsons and their partners and 2 grandchildren all have their own hand knitted socks and love them.
My hubby is my biggest fan and encourages me to buy more sock yarn in the hope I make him more. I don’t have an exact count but estimate at least 10 pairs in the last year and a lovely yellow and green pair on the needles for myself right now (hand dyed merino called buttercup).
Knitting socks is my go to when I don’t have anything else on the go as I find it so therapeutic.
Thank you Christine for inspiring so many of us 💕

  186. Fleur Cranage says:

since May last year I have knitted 4 pairs with another pair almost finished. I’m mainly knitting two socks at a time so I don’t get distracted by other projects during the second in a pair!!

  187. Karen says:

    Happy 10th Birthday! 🎉🎂
I’ve started a second pair of socks following your pattern since May 2024. I’m based in Lancashire.

  188. Carol Raymond says:

Happy 10th Birthday. I am going to cast on my first pair of socks and follow along from Ireland. 😉

  189. Natalie W says:

Congratulations! What a lovely thing to celebrate. I am so grateful that I found you via Attic 24. I was a dedicated crocheter and the only thing I ever fancied knitting was socks, and your amazing step by step instructions made that possible.

I have made 2 pairs since May 2024 but there is one other pair that has never been counted, and a pair of knee highs as well.

And I have dutifully casted on a new pair this morning 🙂

Thanks again for making this possible, and for the wonderful giveaways <3

  190. Susan F says:

Hello! I’m new to sock knitting and look forward to completing my first pair.

  191. Audrey Mulgrew says:

Happy 10th birthday. Have managed 2 pairs now following your fantastic instructions. Being more a crocheter I was not confident knitting but came across your link one day and loved the way you explained it all and so proud of my first attempt. Hoping to venture further into making socks although it does seem to take me a while. Plodding along far north Caithness Scotland.

  192. Elizabeth Shafer says:

Congratulations on your anniversary. Your pattern was my FIRST try at socks being a new knitter & I definitely succeeded. Since May 2024, I’ve only made about 6 socks (many other projects on-going) but they are from the best & easiest pattern! I am in Tucson, Arizona USA

  193. Carolyn Meredith says:

Hello from Indiana in the US. I just found your pattern and I’m excited to get started!

  194. Frances Slack says:

Congratulations! 10 years of Winwick Mum Sockalongs! I have been following you since autumn 2017. During 2024/25 I have knitted 16 pairs of basic socks (I’m now retired) of which 6 pairs were made during the “Knit Every Day In March” Alzheimer’s Research charity event. I live in south Derbyshire.
Thank you for all your support and good cheer.

  195. Lucy says:

    Happy 10th Birthday
I am relatively new to knitting and just love knitted socks. 2025 is the year of the knitted sock for me and I’ve made a couple of pairs with the help of a friend but this will be my first pair on my own with your pattern. Thank you in advance for all the help. I’m in Nottinghamshire.

  196. Joanna Butler says:

Happy 10th birthday, Sockalong! I have only knitted 1 sock since last year (she writes, embarrassed)… not a whole pair. I really need to cast on for the other one!
    Joanna Butler

  197. Lucie Howard says:

    Happy 10th Birthday!
I am just about to finish the toes in my 6th pair since last May. I live in the Outer Hebridies in Scotland and am forever grateful for your wonderful pattern of beautiful, warm, comfy socks, thank you.
    Lucie Howard

  198. Barbara Adamson says:

I’ve made 9 new pairs of socks since last May, and re-toed 3 more pairs!! Your basic pattern is now indelibly knitted into my memory, I can even do Kitchener stitch without looking at the instructions 😁 Thank you for recommending the little circular needle years ago at the Black Sheep barn, and signing your book; you converted me to sock knitting and I’m so grateful!

  199. Allison says:

I am about to start my first pair of little socks for my four month old grandson and have never made socks before! I’m looking forward to looking at your tutorials so thank you in advance!

  200. Jeanette Hurwitz says:

Happy, Happy 10th Birthday! Your socks have accompanied me on many journeys this last year. 4 pairs of basic socks have been knitted in hospital rooms, camping trips, hanging out with my 15 year old grandtwins, and while video chatting with my 94 year old mother. She’s my original yarn arts instructor. Thank you for sharing the love 💜 Jeanette from Northern California, USA

  201. Pauline Andrews says:

I started knitting socks about 4 years ago using your basic pattern and wool purchased from Black Sheep Wool. Since May 24 I’ve probably made 12 or 13 pairs only half of them being your basic pattern as I’ve diversified with my growing confidence. It’s certainly addictive my will and needles come everywhere with me. I live in Flixton so not very far from yourself and have knitted about 6 pairs of your basic socks in the last year.

  202. Christine D Emberson says:

Happy, happy birthday! I’m casting on my fifth pair of socks since learning from your pattern late last year, so grateful as really struggled before. Thank you!

  203. Gillian Abercrombie says:

Happy 10th Birthday and thanks for teaching me to knit socks during lickdown. I’ve been knitting the same pattern ever since. I’ve done 6 pairs in the last year. This is my first Sockalong.

  204. Jo Walker says:

10 years is an amazing amout of time to continue inspiring people, well done! I’ve only made one pair within that time frame, but I am very slow at making socks and I get easily distracted by other craft projects! I’m in a sunny, seaside corner of Kent and I’m about to go and cast on some socks, yay!

  205. Clare Hayes says:

Happy birthday! Like many others the very first socks I ever made were using your pattern! I’ve only made one pair of socks since May 2024 but I’ve been meaning to cast on another, so it’s the perfect time! I’m in Leicestershire

  206. Jilly Turner says:

    Happy 10th birthday xx
I’ve knitted 10 best pairs of socks I’ve ever worn in the last 2 years since discovering your original book.
My feet thank you 🙂 xx

  207. Steffi U. says:

Dear Christine, congratulations on the 10th Birthday!
I’m from southern Germany, I came across your Blog in autumn 2019 and have been reading along regularly but mostly quietly ever since. Thank you for all your posts, stories, thoughts and pictures and of course an extra thank you for all your patterns and tutorials! To be honest, I didn’t knit any real Basic 4 ply Socks last year. But 6 pairs based in your pattern, but modified by me ☺️ And I can assure you that a few pairs will be hopping Off my needles again next year!

  208. Jacqueline Birnie says:

Congratulations on the 10th birthday of the Sockalong from Warrington where I’ve only knitted one pair of basic 4-ply socks with a new pair on the needles now for the Sockalong. I have managed a couple of DK basic pairs and a lacy pair – all using your fabulously detailed patterns. I especially like the basic pattern for self-patterning and striping wool. Keep up the good work and more power to your needles!

  209. Danijela says:

Happy birthday!!! That is amazing, you must be so proud. Amazing giveaway!!! This would be my first pair of socks.

  210. Jenny Rainger says:

  211. Heather M says:

Happy 10th birthday! I’ve knitted 2 pairs of the basic 4 ply socks since May last year.
Thanks for creating the sockalong; I try and make sure I always have a sock on the go for journeys or waiting for appointments. And it often starts a conversation when someone asks what I’m doing.
    I’m in Gloucestershire.

  212. Julie Hodges says:

Happy 10th birthday. I have made 17 pairs of socks this year, ranging from adults down to babies.
    I am in Suffolk.

  213. Knellergal says:

Over 2 years ago I started another pair of Winwick Mum socks in WYS Signature 4ply, Cayenne Pepper colour, after unravelling them a number of times, abandoning them for another project I have continued with them starting a few days before the anniversary to knit the heel flap following instructions from page 71 as I’m in the Magic Loop camp.

  214. Angela Hardy says:

I’ve made 3 or 4. Can’t remember. But only short ones.

  215. Louise says:

Congratulations on the 10 year anniversary of the sock a long! I’ve made 3 pairs of the basic 4 ply socks since last May. The first ones were my first finished pair of socks! I’m in Sheffield?

    • Anna says:

Happy birthday Sockalong! My first pair of socks (and the second, third and I think fourth) were Winwick Mum Basic Socks. Since May 2024 I think I can add only three to the total, as I use it only for yarns that I think shine most without a pattern (like Seascape, in which I knit one of my favourite pairs). I also refer often to the Basic tutorials of the different yarn weights when I don’t really trust another pattern’s stitch counts. With the Basic Socks, I know they will fit great.

  216. Helena Baker-Green says:

Happy 10th Birthday. Without you I would not have been able to learn to knit socks and now I can’t stop! I have made 10 pairs since last May-my favourite bring for my friends 83 year old Dad who is bravely living with cancer who shows everyone the socks I made him for his birthday 🎈
Helena on the Isle of Wight

  217. Gill Dolphin says:

Happy Birthday – your website is inspirational and with your help I have made 4 pairs of basic 4 ply socks since September 2024. All my closest friends are choosing a ball of wool and getting a pair made as a birthday present (I do have a bit of a backlog!!!!)
Many thanks for all you do in the woolly world. Gill x

  218. Maryanne Lucas says:

I printed the pattern gathered yarn and supplies and am ready to start. From NEVADA usa hAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY.

  219. Beverley Barton says:

I love your sock patterns as they are easy to follow. I have started a tradition of knitting socks as Christmas presents for our refugee guests. I use the Christmas pattern with the WYS Christmas yarn.

At the moment I am using the Buddy pattern to knit socks for friends who are, expecting babies. I hope to send one pair to Ukraine.

  220. Sally Robbins says:

Happy Sockalong Birthday! I’m horrified that I’ve only knitted 1 pair of basic 4-ply socks since last May (but I have made 4 other pairs, 3 from some of your other patterns) Must go and cast on another pair of socks before the day is out!

  221. sue Jennens says:

  223. Claire says:

I’m surprised that I’ve done three pairs and just cast on my fourth pair to do with you, despite other projects I just can’t resist casting on socks. I’m from Leicestershire

  224. Katherine says:

Happy 10th birthday!! Your basic 4 ply sock pattern is brilliant. I have knitted three pairs of the basic 4 ply pattern in the last twelve months and have many more lined up!

    North East of Scotland

  225. Helen Craddock says:

I learnt to knit socks from your pattern 10 years ago from the onset of your online presence including on an old knitting forum. I have always had a pair of socks on the go ever since! Since last anniversary I have knitted two pairs with a third on the second sock at the moment. They have given me a huge amount of fun and increased my wellbeing over the years. Wishing you many more anniversaries. Thank you for your dedication

  226. Vikki G says:

I’ve just cast on my first pair of Winwick basics since 2022, and I almost know the pattern by heart now. Learned sock knitting from this pattern about 9 years ago and there hasn’t been a year when I haven’t knitted socks. You gave me the confidence to go on to more complicated patterns. Thank you ❤️ I’m in Greater Manchester!

  227. Beth says:

    Hello from Queensland, Australia!
I have knitted 6 pairs of basic 4ply socks in the past year (plus the pair I’ve cast on today for the sock-along!)
In addition I’ve branched out and also knitted 2x pairs of Easy Cable Sock, 1× Easy Lace Socks, and 5x pairs of basic DK socks.
Really love knitting Winwick Mum patterns!
Thank you so much for all your hard work!

  228. Cathy says:

Happy Birthday ‘Sock-a-long’, thank you so much for all your help and encouragement both on your blog, commenting on mine, or on instagram. I’m starting another pair of socks using your tutorial from the orange book. I’d unpicked the yarn as I’d got the sizing wrong, so re-starting afresh. I’ve knitted 3 pairs from your pattern, the last pair was in 2024. Each time I knit this pattern, I improve, thank you x

  229. Suzanne Ragsdale says:

I’m casting on a pair or DK boot socks in honor of sock a long. I really want some heavier socks to wear with my Birkenstocks. I live in coastal Washington state and wear wool socks almost all year long. I’ve made about 10 pairs of basic socks. I usually have a pair in progress because they are so portable. I love making and wearing hand knitted socks.

  230. Kerry H says:

Happy 10th Sockalong! I have made 8 pairs of basic 4 ply socks over the last 12 months – I think I know the instructions by heart now 🙂

  231. Sue Hermiston says:

I made my first pair of socks following a workshop. The tension is loose and they aren’t particularly comfortable. I wasn’t going to bother again but somewhere along the line I came across the Winwick Mum blog. I have knitted numerous pairs since then and have encouraged others to try, always emphasising how easy your instructions are to follow. And the tension means they are really comfortable.

  232. Brenda Auterson says:

I have knitted 1 pair of your basic 4 ply socks (well, still working on the second sock) since May 2024. Thanking you for the information and encouragement in your articles. I live in Scotland.

  233. Kate says:

Happy 10th Birthday! I’ve knitted 1 pair of 4ply this year (and a couple of boot sock pairs!). Love your patterns! I’m in the UK

  234. Jane says:

    Congratulations.
Never thought I’d be able to knit socks. Far too complicated.
Your enthusiasm for sock knitting shines through so I gave it a go and have made 2prs. The magic of the heel turn.
Thank you . I am just down the road in Egerton nr Bolton

  240. Helen Barker says:

Just 1 pair of 4 ply this last year, I mainly do 8 ply for my walking boots these days! I only learnt to knit about 4 years ago and a friend convinced me socks were easy for my 2nd project and go for it! So I did!

  241. Jane Quambro says:

Happy 10th birthday 🎂 I’ve only knitted half of 1 pair since May 24 & probably about 6 altogether. Each time though, I’m thrilled that I’ve managed to do a heel, graft the toes & actually make a wearable pair of socks thanks to your Sockalong. I am from Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Thank you Christine

  242. Linda says:

Happy Birthday, from Hertfordshire. I have knitted 2 pairs of basic 4 ply socks. Happiness is hand knitted socks

Happy birthday! I am picking up stitches on the heel flap of my second sock!

  244. Caroline Waterman says:

Happy 10th Birthday Sockalong! Thank you so much for ‘sitting beside me’ and showing me how to knit socks. I was one of those people who thought I could never make a sock – until I stumbled across your brilliant tutorials six years ago. I think I can safely call myself an addict now and cannot contemplate any tube or train journey without an emergency sock in my bag (I live in London, UK).
I’ve made four pairs of Basic 4ply socks this year and have just cast on another pair today.
Here’s to another 10 years and more!

  245. Sarah says:

  246. Karen Callis says:

Happy 10th Birthday Christine! What would we do without you??? Your sock pattern & tutorials were my saviours and I’ve produced many basic socks over the years. Only 3 1/2 pairs since last May but I plan to knit more as my sock yarn stash is actually overflowing! I’m live near the Eden Project in beautiful Cornwall x

  247. Helen says:

Happy 10th Birthday! Absolutely loved your tutorials many years ago! My tally for the last 12 months must be 19/20 pairs of basic socks! I am from Swindon in Wiltshire

  248. Alison Townsend says:

Hello. Ravelry tells me I started knitting socks in 2010 do that was before the basic socks came about. I’ve knitted sone of your contrast cuff, heel and toe socks recently and, as I have nothing on my needles at the moment, it’s the perfect opportunity for a pair of basic socks. I will make them a little shorter as I’d like to use them as bed socks in the autumn. I’m near Banbury in the UK.

  249. Maureen Martin says:

Started knitting socks on 16th January this year after discovering 9” circular needles. Had tried wrestling with DPN’s in the past and failed miserably. About to start pair number 10 today. Great pattern and tutorials, supportive Facebook groups and I’m now a confident sock knitter.
    Many thanks from Wānaka NZ

  250. Carol Borrett says:

    happy 10th birthday.
lots of socks knitted, 4 of the basic sock. it shows of the yarn beautifully.
    Carol. South Australia. Australia

  251. Pat Ferrey says:

Happy 10th Sockalong birthday! Lots of socks over the past year here in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Of those 3 are the basic sock, 4 have been in a more “business-like” color with a K3,P1 rib on the main body of the sock and a final one with contrast cuff, heel, and toes so I’m not quite sure how many actually will go into your count. Thank you so much Christine for a lovely pattern and an introduction to a very addicting hobby!

  252. Carole S. says:

Congratulations on 10 wonderful years!!! I don’t remember when I found your blog, but it was definitely your enthusiasm and generous spirit that gave me the push I needed to knit my first socks last year. Thanks to you, I have finished 5 pairs of 4-ply socks in the last year. I used your Super Socks to do a pair of 6-ply socks as well, so I’m working on another pair, and I’m going to do a cast-on to celebrate the Sockalong birthday. I can’t thank you enough for all the encouragement and your excellent pattern. You’ve made a world of difference to me.

  253. Gill says:

Happy Birthday. I knitted my 1st pair of socks in the November 2020 lockdown using your book. Since May 2024 I have knitted 6 pairs of socks. 5 as gifts for a friend having chemo and my children, 1 for myself.

  254. Julia H. says:

    Dear Christine,
Congratulations to 10 years full of posts about life in general, sometimes funny, sometimes more thoughtfully, recipes, gardening advice, book recommendations and of course: Sock knitting and patterns! I have knitted eight and a half pair of socks since May 2024. There is always a sock on my needles, no matter what. Keep on the good work, I am enjoying your blog so much.

  255. Vivienne says:

I’ve made 4 pairs since last May. Love knitting socks so relaxing and my children love receiving. I’m from Australia

  256. Laura Benington says:

Happy 10th birthday! Since last May I’ve knitted 6 pairs of socks using the basic 4 ply pattern and sock along tutorial (although I did the shortie version as that’s the kind of sock I prefer to wear.) I have my next pair started and on the needles! Thank you so much for sharing your sock knitting knowledge. Before I found your page I was hopelessly trying to knit socks in the flat on straight needles and ended up having some rather unfortunate, yet humorous, results. I thought knitting socks in the round would just be too complicated but now I know differently. Because of your lovely blog my mother and I both enjoy casting on a new pair!
    Laura Ohio,USA

  257. Linda Benington says:

Congratulations on your Sockalong 10th Birthday! I started knitting Basic 4-ply socks, the shortie version, about one year ago. So far I’ve made 7 pairs and have cast on another pair today. Thank you for designing such a wonderful pattern! They are the only socks I care to wear! My daughter introduced me to your blog and I look forward each week to reading it. I live in Ohio, US.

  258. Tracey Hussey says:

I learnt to knit socks Christmas 2024. I’m 62 and wanted a new hobby so I thought…why not! so thankful for the Facebook page though as I came up with some silly questions but all were answered so nicely and I am now on mu 9th pair!!!! I haven’t gifted any as I’m still practising, they aren’t all perfect but as each one comes of the needle it’s is better than the last one. so pleased to have found this addictive hobby. thank you Christine for your easy to learn pattern and videos. I’ve watched them sooooo mamyy times 🤣Happy 10th Birthday.

  259. Andi says:

Happy Birthday! Your Basic 4-Ply Sock pattern started me on the my sock knitting journey a few years ago and I can’t stop knitting more socks. I make different kinds of socks, but the basic 4-ply is still my favorite. I knitted at least 10 pairs of that pattern since last May. I am from Seattle.

  260. Alexandra Batty says:

Your patterns are the ones that gave me the sock knitting bug!! I’ve knit 3 pairs of basic sock slings since May last year, can’t beat an emergency sock 🥰 thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all! From (sometimes sunny) England

  261. Chris Ross says:

Hello Winwick Mum. I found your blog a few months ago. It sounded interesting so the other day I took the plunge and bought some WYS sock yarn and needles from my local shop. This willl be my first pair of home knitted socks ever. I’m looking forward to seeing how they turn out.

    I live in Crowthorne, Berkshire

  262. Laura says:

Hi Christine – huge congrats on your 10th birthday! Here’s to the next 10. I think I’ve made 10 pairs of your sock pattern (give or take a pair or two) as it’s the only sock pattern I ever use. Enjoy your birthday! Laura (Durham)

  263. Dolores says:

Hello Winwick Mum, thank you for this pattern and the generosity in which you shared it. Many years ago it was the first sock pattern I found, it has been my “go to” many times since and provided an understanding of sock sizing that meant I could adjust any other pattern to fit.
I have knit one in the last year following the full pattern and again used it to adjust several others with thicker ply etc.
    I am from N.S.W Australia.
Happy Birthday and thank you again!

  264. Rita says:

    Happy 10th birthday!
I read your blog for a long time now but never start knitting your socks( its nice to read about it though😊) I knitted some many, many years ago, they weren’t a succes.
I think now must be the time,I have some beautiful yarn in my stash and I will start with your tutorial!!
I am in Groningen, the Netherlands

  265. Lisa Coull says:

    Happy 10th Birthday!
I’ve knitted 6 pairs of the Basic pattern since last May but the brilliant pattern, tutorials & FB group has given me the confidence to try many other patterns too!

  266. Lizze B says:

You have the best sock tutorials/books and website for knitting socks and all things socky. I met you at Yarndale with your washing lines of socks people had knitted and was inspired to start knitting socks. They are my go to knitting. Travel friendly and good gifts.
Since May I have completed 3 pairs but have two pairs waiting to be finished. They will be on next years tally !!
Here’s to the next 10 years and beyond. Congratulations to you from a happy sock knitter from Kent.🧦🧶

  269. Gillian says:

l’m in the process of knitting my first pair; have only done the ribbing! Don’t feel confident enough to try a pattern; just doing stocking stitch. I look at my knitting more than I actually do it; scared to make any mistakes! Really impressed with those knitters who can rattle them up so quickly! One stitch at a time ..

  270. Irune says:

    Happy 10th birthday!!!
I don’t remember when I started reading your blog but I can tell you that since that day many pairs of socks have become locely gifts for family and friends. Since last May I’ve knitted 4 pairs and, although I have another one on my needles (I always knit both socks at the same time), I’m casting a pair today to celebrate the birthday.
Congratulations from the Basque Country, Irune

Happy 10th birthday, in the last year I have knitted 10 pairs of socks for my husband, my daughter and myself. My daughter celebrated her 30th this year and she asked me to knit her a pair of socks for, so I did 2 pairs. I always have a pair on my needles as they go with me if I am travelling to visit my children or go on holidays. I am currently knitting socks as I am in Bucharest visiting my middle daughter and we are visiting some of the lovely castles and seeing the countryside.
Enjoy celebrating the 10th birthday of winwick mum it’s the only sock patterns I use as they are written so clearly, thank you for the inspiration

  275. Maria Mitchell says:

I have still to make my first pair of socks. Was going to start them in January but fell and broke my wrist so now that has healed I can finally make a start.

  276. Linda Poynter says:

Happy Birthday. 💖 I finished my first pair and cast on my second pair of socks on your 10 th Birthday. I couldn’t have done it without your tutorials.. I’m not an experienced knitter..loving learning a new skill in my retirement.

  277. Christine Brill says:

I made my first pair of basic 4 ply socks in January this year, and I’m now on my 11th pair!! A friend did tell me it’s addictive, and she was right! All of my family now wear a pair & love them, and I’m going to try and make a pair for my grandson. I have also recruited another sock knitter for you Christine. Thank you, just thank you ☺️ from another Christine in North Warwickshire

All my friends now wear hand knitted socks, my family not so keen.

  279. Lynne Parry-Griffiths says:

Happy Sockalong – I had always thought socks were ‘too hard’ and ‘fiddly’ but with the help of your brilliant tutorial, I finally picked up some sock yarn and dpns about seven years ago. That first pair of socks have since been undone but I have become almost addicted to sock making, especially since I discovered how easy it was with a small circular needle to make the majority of the sock. Socks are now given for birthday and Christmas presents; some 4ply, some dk. I just love it! I’ve just started my 6th pair since last May and always use your pattern. Thank you! I’m in North Wales.

  280. Susan Harrison says:

Thanks to your wonderful pattern and guides I have managed to knit 6 pairs of socks since last birthday and have a 2nd sock on my needles which I am hoping to finish today. I started my christmas knitting early this year. From sunny Redcar in the North East

  281. Jennifer says:

First pair slowly on the go. Yorkshire.

    • Pat Sanders says:

Hi Congratulation on your 10 years. I am hoping to do the sock- along as my first this year. I do struggle, but hoping to complete these for my hubby, who is my rock., but has very large feet.
I’m now moved to Suffolk in England.

  282. Susan Brandwood says:

Happy Birthday!🥳 Since last May I have knitted 4 pairs of Your basic sock and have just cast on my latest. Always have a pair on the go and manage most of it now without the pattern. Thanks for getting me into socks as love them.🩷 I’m in Stockport Cheshire.

  283. Stella says:

Happy 10th birthday! I’m still sitting on the fence but I’ve got the yarn and the needles so now I just need to stop procrastinating and jump in. Your birthday celebrations are just the push I need to get started. Now where did I put that yarn?

  284. Sue Hughes says:

Congratulations on your birthday. What an achievement. Wonderful pattern recommended by a friend. Just casting on some lovely WYS yarn and looking forward to knitting it following this detailed Basic Sock Pattern. I will look at the tutorials too as I go along. Thank you so much and please enter me into the 10 year birthday draw. I’d love to win.

  285. Judith Williams says:

i have knitted 10pairs of socks since May 24 i live in Paignton Devon, thank you for your help. Happy Birthday(forget my head if it wasn’t screwed on) lovely patterns

  286. Ellen Wort says:

Since May I’ve knitted fifteen pairs of Basic 4ply socks in various colours. Of those, four were Christmas presents – they were very well received.
My mother used to knit socks in the early sixties and it was something I thought I could never do – it has taken me until she 69 to get started!
Most have been knitted in Holywood, Co.Down and a pair finished on our last cruise.

  287. Annie says:

Happy 10th Birthday! I’m Annie from north east Scotland and I’ve wanted to learn how to knit socks for years but have been too intimidated by the thought of turning a heel. Having stumbled upon your blog about a week ago and spent a good while reading I ordered my 4 ply sock yarn and pins, followed your instructions for measuring my feet and am about to cast on my first ever pair of socks. Thank you so much for giving me the courage.

  288. Jean Sturtivant says:

I have knitted 10 pairs of lovely Winwick basic socks this year. Unfortunately my husband passed away at Christmas (he would only wear my hand knitted socks) and I have lost my sock knitting mojo. This birthday sockalong may be just what I need to get going again. Will let you know. Thank you for all you do for sock knitters of the world.

  289. Carolle Murray says:

Happy Sockalong birthday! I’ve knitted 4 pairs of your basic 4 ply sock. It’s the -astern I come back to…especially for self-striping yarn.
I’m in Scotland, so wool socks are worn all year round and I’ll never tire of knitting socks.
Thanks for all you do for the community. x

  290. Judith says:

I have knitted 2 pairs and will now cast on to knit a pair of gents (I have only knitted ladies or children’s before).
    Sending from Switzerland.

  291. Mary Jane PLATT says:

Thank you for all the work you do to encourage sock knitting: Since finding your guidance, I’ve knitted lots of pairs, mostly with your patterns, over the years I have been following you (I’d never knitted socks before). My knitting has improved immensely with the practice, and I always have a ‘take anywhere’ emergency sock knitting pack on the go. I would particularly like to thank you for encouraging ‘knit anywhere’, as over the years, on planes, trains, and almost any means of transport or waiting areas I have been practicing the art, and most times people will ask/chat about what I am doing, so making friends as well.

Currently based in Norwich, I think I have knitted about 4 pairs of basic 4ply socks this year.

  292. Amelia says:

Happy 10th Birthday! I had never knitted socks till I tried your basic sock pattern. I have knitted 2 pairs in the last 12 months- both gifted to family members and look forward to doing more! Thank you for making it so easy to follow along. Best wishes from Sydney, Australia.

  293. Alicia Sims says:

Having only started knitting at all in May 2024, I’m yet to knit a pair of WM socks. But that’s about to change as what better excuse to cast on a new project than during the sock along! I am fond of TAAT so I’ll be casting on two new 4 basic ply socks after work tomorrow, as it is currently Sunday night here in Western Australia!

  294. Leanne Tonge says:

Hi Christine!! I’ve made 3 pairs of Basic 4 ply socks, 2 pairs of the BSW Sheep socks and one pair of the gorgeous Sanctuary Socks since last May. I find I always have a sock on the needles. They’re the perfect portable project! Congratulations of 10 fabulous years of designs!!

  295. Jayne Whetnall says:

I’m only halfway through knitting my first ever sock. I’m so excited to wear a pair of homemade socks though 🙂 Thanks for all the information that you provide.

  296. Lisa says:

Happy birthday, I have knitted 1 pair and I am working on my second pair right now. Love your blog. Congrats on the sock-along birthday

  297. Debra Cole says:

Happy 10th Sockalong Birthday I have only made 2 pairs since last May, I have been doing other projects. I have cast on an emergency train travel pair, using up supplies from other pairs. What lovely generous prizes. I’m in Margate, England, a short walk from the seaside. xx

  298. Sara says:

I’m on my 9th and 10th pairs since May 2024, I was trying to get ahead of the game with Christmas present socks and parked them to do a birthday present pair for my best friend! I’ve made over 40 pairs from Christine’s pattern now and I can make them without having to refer to the pattern, I’ve come a long way since my first hesitant effort and I’ll never forget the mystifying thrill of following the heel turn instructions and seeing a sock magically appear! All thanks to Winwick Mum x

  299. Tracey Ogden says:

I followed Christine’s blog for ages before I started knitting socks with her basic 4ply sock pattern. 31 pairs to date, 4 since May 24 . Currently Yarndale Brenda on my needles with the basic socks since May pattern . Lancashire

  300. Bek says:

your original 4 ply sock pattern and advice on how to size my socks to my feet has been invaluable. I have knitted 3 pairs of socks since may 2024. I was getting some looks and lots of questions when knitting Christmas socks in the hotel bar on Sorrento. sock knitting is such a great portable project.

  301. Christine says:

Hi Christine! I’ve just cast on my fifth pair of Basic 4ply socks since May last year. I never thought I’d be able to get the hang of socks until I discovered this pattern and my copy of Super Socks! Thank you so much for 10 years of happy sock knitting!! I’m in Glossop, Derbyshire.

  302. Linda says:

Hello from Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Happy 10th Birthday. I’ve just counted up how many socks using your basic pattern and I can’t believe I’ve done 12! Your basic pattern is my go to, I’ve tried others but usually end up undoing it and using your basic pattern, I like to let the colours do the talking. Xmas was a busy time as I had 7 requests for them as presents. I have just cast on my thirteenth. I’ve started doing a checker board heel flap with two colours which makes it extra strong. I also always do the rib, heel flap and toes in a contrast colour as I have found this allows me to make 2 pairs from each 100g balls.

  303. Helen G says:

Hello and a Happy Birthday to the Sockalong. Over the last year I have made one pair of basic socks and am about to cast on another for the Sockalong. I’m afraid I’m very slow but aspire to get quicker. Thank you for all your inspiration 😊

  304. Fiona says:

I always recommend your tutorials to anyone who knits or admires my own socks – if I can knit socks, then anyone can! My brain finds 3d making difficult so producing something wearable using “sticks & string” is pure magic😉 Only 1 and a half new pairs knitted since last year. We were packing up to move from Kent to Devon then and now we are packing again to move from our rented cottage to our own bungalow. While my husband has been busy renovating, I have been clearing the garden & wondering just I have taken on – it’s hardly been touched in 40 yrs!!! I am in dire need of an easy knit for the evenings so I need to have a rummage later to unearth my yarn stash…or have an excuse to buy something new later this week.😂

  305. Patricia Rayner says:

Since May 2024 I have only made 3 pairs of your basic socks in 4 ply. 2 have been gifted but the one pair I kept was knitted in yarn dyed in the colours of a Calico cat. We had a lovely Calico cat called … Sox, so it was very appropriate. I have so many socks of my own that I mostly gift socks now to friends and family. I want the world to know the “gorgeousness” of hand knitted socks! That’s all down to you Christine. I live on the Isle of Wight by the way.

  306. Tracey Vokes says:

Hello Christine, what wonderful prizes. I have only knitted one pair of socks, just to prove to myself I could do it, and because I only like knee high socks. Now I have found your knee high socks pattern and will be casting on tomorrow in Wood pigeon. I live in Exeter, Devon – near to the city, the moors and the sea – perfect!

  307. Angela Brand says:

Hi Christine, knitting socks intrigued me, in my head I just couldn’t figure how it was done, so when I found your brilliant pattern & instruction I was hooked. Too date, I have made 7 pairs and always have some on my needles, they are m yo to travel knit. It’s lovely that your blogs & website gave encouraged so many people to knit socks, you should be very proud. Congratulations on such a big milestone xx

  308. Elizabeth de Quidt says:

Happy birthday, your tutorials were what enabled me to knit socks and find out what fun they are. I love having an emergency pair and pick it up at odd moments. I have not knitted any basic socks this year as I have worked on your easy cable socks. They were a solace to work on after my mother died last May. I was given a lovely book of unusual sock patterns, it is lovely but I have to say the patterns are simply nowhere near as simple to understand and work from as yours (why do so many start at the toes?!) Also I have used your tutorials to teach my daughter to knit socks, so thank you. I will be casting on a basic pair when I get home (away for the bank holiday atm). Home is in Somerset UK

  309. Linda Ralphs says:

Thank you so much for your blog Christine. You inspired me to start knitting socks a couple of years ago. Brilliant as I have odd shaped feet. I have knitted 3 pairs this year. I have also encouraged others to look at your site and start knitting socks. Linda in the Cotswolds

    • Sally says:

ive made four pairs in the past year! thank again for the great pattern, Winwick socks are my gave socks tomeear and hope there will be many more next year 🙂

  310. Catherine Houston says:

I’ve only made 1 full pair of basic socks following your instructions closely! I’ve cast on another pair for the sockalong and hopefully the heel turn will be easier this time 😂

  311. Gillian says:

Love reading your blog Christine. I started knitting socks during lockdown and can’t stop. Hubby loves his hand made socks. Got 3 of your books and quiet a few downloaded patterns. I must have knitted about 8 to 10 pairs socks since Sockalong last year. Basic pair smaller size for child on my needles now. Thankyou for all you do Christine. Love from Gillian Nottinghamshire. x

  312. Jeanne Minney says:

    Happy Birthday and thank
you for all the super patterns which I have been using since day one. I have made 6 pairs in the last 12 months, including one pair of boot socks for my son’s size 14 feet!

    Count those as you will!

  314. Chantelle Whitfield says:

I only just started making socks. I’m on my 2nd pair for the sock along

  315. Sarah says:

Still on my first pair of socks since I did a class near Cardiff to make a sock top down, they sent me in your direction. Following the pattern at the moment for shorties, so far I have 2 halves of 2 socks because whilst not exactly doing two at a time, I learn better with repetition so have two socks on the go to get past the heel flap and turn etc.

  316. Carole Hunt says:

Happy Birthday 🥳. 2 Basic Socks completed in 2024, thank you for the inspiration, really enjoy wearing all my handmade socks 🧦 😃

  317. Rachel Emma Louise Grant says:

I’m from Norwich, UK and go by the nickname Panda ☺️

  323. Clare Wilde says:

I’m so excited about casting on my very first pair of socks as soon as my toddler is asleep, but I’m terrified of picking up the stitches. I’ve put my big girl pants on and I’m going for it! Happy 10th Birthday and thank you for the community you’ve created.

  324. SueW says:

I have a sock in progress, I found your site in 2017 before the sock along and used the basic pattern. I haven’t made any WM socks in the past year, but I’ve now got a pair on the needles, using the short circular needles,
I’ve used the Easy Lace sock and DK sock patterns and they are well written. Thank you for inspiring us knitters to make socks.

  325. Sally says:

Happy 10th birthday, just cast on my first pair here in Lincolnshire!

  326. Anne-Mette Nordahl says:

Hello and happy 10th birthday from Athens, Greece. Since May 2024 I have knitted 10 pairs of socks but only FIVE are in the basic 4ply winwick mum sock pattern. I am currently finishing the 5th pair and I will start a 6th one right after that (probably tomorrow) as it’s the second part of a gift I want to give towards the end of the month. Love the simplicity of the pattern and the mindless knitting it offers. 🧶

  365. Yvonne says:

Happy 10th Birthday, I love reading your messages they are so inspiring. Below is a summary of my sock journey.

I’ve made 3 pairs of socks and live in Northamptonshire. The first pair was made in a Aran weight as I wasn’t sure how they would turn out. They ended up being posted to Australia to keep a friends son warm in the outback in the winter. He packed them in is luggage when returning back to the UK for Christmas. The next pair went back to Australia with our daughter who had cold feet on the flight home to the UK to visit family. Who knows I might even get to wear the last pair!!

Since May 2024 I have finished two pairs of Treasure socks; one pair of Basic in helical stripes; one pair of Sanctuary; one pair of Neat Ripple; half a pair of Trailblazer; and I’m halfway through another pair of Treasure for a friend who always has cold feet because of having had chemo treatment for cancer.
I make that five pairs and two halves.
And I’m delighted you made me look back and count, because I hadn’t realised how many pairs I’d finished.
Thank you, again, for all that you do.

  372. Michele Kenvin says:

I’ve been following you since Lucy from Attic24 posted about knitting socks. She said to follow Christine. So I started following your blog! I have yet to start my first sock! I’m still trying to finish my blanket started in January but life gets in the way. I’m flying to England on Sunday. Taking my sock yard and needles with me! I’ll be there three weeks. Perhaps I can at least cast on! But I’m a crocheter. I was taught knitting by my godmother many years ago like 65!! Wish me luck!

  436. Sharon Gray says:

To be honest I’ve not knitted a pair of basic socks this year, flushed with success after knitting my first two pairs of basic socks a few years ago I’ve now moved on to other Winwick Mum sock patterns. So many of them, my sock drawer is overflowing. However, my very first pair are still my favourite, does that count? Happy 10th birthday and continue the good work!

  437. Janice Allen says:

Happy birthday + thanks so much for your wonderful patterns + videos! A friend introduced me to your Super Socks book as I had total sock envy. I was a crocheter not a knitter + thought knitting socks would be beyond me. But your socks have got me completely addicted to knitting now and I have knit 5 pairs of the basic socks (as well as lots of other items) + I am about to start another pair for the Sockalong. I live on north coast of Ireland. Thanks again + a huge happy birthday!!

    Hi Christine,
I learnt to knit socks from your very detailed clear instructions and I’m addicted. I’ve knitted 14 pairs since last May.
I slow up a bit in the spring and summer as I grow exhibition vegetables to show all over the country. So nice to have a sock to knit on the long journeys to and from the shows.
My family love the socks I’ve been producing and I only ever wear socks I’ve knitted now .
Thank you for all the lovely informative emails and free patterns.
    Best wishes

Happy 10th birthday from Vancouver, Canada, and a million thanks for teaching me how to knit socks! I have knit so many pairs of your DK sock pattern, shortie style (also your pattern), and have even bought a pair of clear boots to show them all off. I also learned how to do colour changes by watching your video on “trapping” the yarn. I can’t imagine going anywhere now without my socks project bag!

  451. Sonia says:

Love your sock patterns. Was gifted the project super socks book for my birthday and finding it really helpful for making notes for different sized socks. Since last May have completed 1 pair of socks for my husband who loves them. Am now working on a pair for myself both using hand dyed wool from an independent shop. Happy 10th Birthday from Sonia a knitter in Derbyshire! 😊🧶

  453. Becky says:

Thank you, thank you for getting me started on sock knitting. A colleague kept knitting socks and I, like many, thought it all looked too complicated. Then I found the tutorial and the rest is history. You were so successful in boosting my confidence that I haven’t knitted any of the basic sock pattern this year – I’ve been too busy trying out others and refining my own fit! I can now knit a pair of perfectly fitting socks for myself with no pattern, and it’s so freeing! Sorry not to be able to add to your total, but my 10+ pairs are all thanks to you.

  454. Karen Ayres says:

I have made 4 and am currently on the fifth pair of socks, I used to use lots of different sock patterns but now use your basic one nearly exclusively, it produces such good results and is simple to knit. I have progressed to using magic loop instead of DPNS though. I am in the UK near Guildford

  455. Carol says:

Happy 10th Birthday, (from UK) I am so glad I found you. I am on my second pair of basic 4 ply socks. Your tutorials are very easy to follow, so so grateful, thank you.

I’ve lost count of all the socks I’ve made but they all began with a sock day with you at Woolaballoo in Durham, the rest is history! Thank you for enabling my addiction 🤣
    And happy sockalong birthday x

  457. Lynn Blythe says:

Happy birthday! Well done for all you do, and for your help with any queries. I’ve made 2 pairs of 4ply socks, but numerous pairs of 6ply and dk weight socks as I spend most of my days outside in boots walking dogs and helping with a friend’s horses.
    Here’s to another 10 years!🎉

  461. Hilary Sanderson says:

So glad you said one has to scroll past all the other comments to reach, the reply box! I thought I’d got it wrong yesterday when I couldn’t find it! 😁 I always enjoy reading your blog including the adventures of little and not so little daughters. This year I have finished two pairs of socks and am currently half way through some trainer socks in bright pink cotton. One of the pairs was a size 14 which needed some adaptation of your original pattern and as I wasn’t happy with the fit of the first sock I knitted, I ended up pulling it back and remaking it!! Living in a village near Ely, UK

  462. Chris Hall says:

    Happy 10th Birthday!
Well done on your creation of such a massive sock knitter community.
Whilst my sock knitting is lacking I do LOVE decent socks! I’m only a beginner I’m afraid!
I do however read your posts and look forward to them arriving, I love their chatty inclusive content. Even at times when the world seems to be at odds with itself they brighten my day. Thankyou!
Love from Chris, Burnham on Sea, England

  463. Bel says:

I’m just starting out. Not knitted since my early twenties (now early sixties) and decided to jump in at the deep end 😁 I’ve knitted and frogged this sock sooo many times, I can almost knit to the heel turn without the pattern 😁. Picking up stitches for the gusset is my problem area so at the moment. Love the journey so far and, with all my mistakes, I’m learning a lot. Using WYS pheasant x

  464. Helena Dale says:

Happy 10th birthday – what a fantastic achievement! I’m in Nottinghamshire and have now knitted 4 pairs of basic socks. I’ve never had the courage to have a go – previous attempts ended disastrously and I felt as if I was knitting with pick-up-sticks! Then along came your pattern suggesting using a circular needle and together with your clear instructions I’ve never looked back. Completely addicted so a big birthday thank you.

  465. RiaB says:

I love your sock patterns! My granny first gave me your book a couple years ago and I think I’ve now made about 30 pairs following your great patterns!

Ashamed to say I haven’t knitted any BUT that is because I produced enough pairs the previous year to keep my husband supplied for quite some time! Love knitting socks as they are such an easily portable project to take with wherever I go and have a few spare minutes to do a few rows.

  470. Julia Fogg says:

I am knitting my very first pair of socks and really welcome the opportunity to learn from you and to get help when I need it – which I’m sure I will! Really grateful for all the information.
    Thank you!
    I’m in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia

  471. Happy 10th sockiversary Christine !
I think I must have knitted about two dozen pairs in that time. You know my back story and what I’ve overcome. Mostly from WYS, because I believe in buying British but it’s the nostalgia fabulous yarn regardless.

  472. Sarah Murray says:

Happy 10th birthday! Your anniversary coincides with my partners birthday and it will be mine in a few days then we will be concentrating on our young son’s birthday and party. So no time foe me to join in the Sockalong this year either though I shall enjoy watching it. I have only knit a few pairs of socks, less than 10 say but none this year. You were the one who taught me with your basic 4 ply pattern. Thank you for the month long code which I will take advantage of and I will be casting on a pair as soon as my knit list and time allows. Sarah in Manchester UK xxx

  473. Paulene says:

I’m on my first pair of your basic socks but I’ve been knitted socks since the beginning of lockdown. I’m from central Scotland, so really not that far away.

  474. Sandra says:

Love your patterns. I learned to knit socks from your Basic 4-ply pattern and soon became addicted. I’m not a fast knitter but have done 8 pairs since May 2024 .. currently on my ninth pair! I’m in rural West Wales.

  475. Chris says:

I think I have made 6 pairs since May 2024 and have just cast on my 7th pair. I was warned by my local yarn shop that once I started I would be addicted – there is always a pair on needles and I always have a ball of sock yarn whenever I visit a a yarn shop. I was in Rutland now I am in Lincs 😊

  476. Judith Asquith says:

I’ve knitted 4 pairs since last May – 3 have been gifted, and one for me! the one for me is a pair of scrappies, using up lots of leftover bits of yarn, and I’m very proud that I was able to make them as twins! I live in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

  477. Julie Wass says:

Hi! Happy Birthday! Since retiring last year, I have had time to rediscover all my hobbies. I was directed to your blog and tutorials by a lovely lady at my local yarn shop. I have knitted 2 pairs of the basic 4-ply socks and 2 pairs of the short version since May last year and thoroughly enjoyed making them. Thank you for your clear and helpful instructions. Best wishes from Rotherham, S Yorks

  478. Sue Grundy says:

Happy Happy Birthday Christine. Thank you so much. I am over half way through my first basic four ply sock. Life (or rather my greenhouse and garden full of plants) is getting in the way right now, but I have knitted my first two pairs of DK socks from your pattern, with the help of your tutorials, since May 2024. I am so pleased with them. The second pair were extra large and extra long for my partner who always has cold feet! He loves them. Looking forward to many more. I am in rural North Shropshire.

  479. Glenda says:

wow 10years really must finish my socks I was knitting

  480. Dawn Stewart says:

Thank you Winwick Mum you got me in to Knitting my own Socks. I love your patterns and your wools divine. X

  481. Rita Barron says:

Happy Birthday and congratulations! Thanks to your books and blogs I can now knit a reasonable pair of socks! In fact I’ve knitted about fifteen pairs to date! I’m super chuffed as I had always shy’d away from trying. It’s totally thanks to your super easy to follow instructions. Thank you.

    • Caroline Henry says:

Happy birthday! I asked my online knitting group for an easy sock pattern after impulse buying some lovely yarn. They all pointed me to winwick mum. This was in Feb 2025 and I am now working on my 4th pair! I had never heard of the mini circulars and absolutely love them now.

  482. Vanessa Wood-Mewett says:

7 pairs I think since May last year, St Leonard’s near Hastings and now realise I should be buying more small circulars than yarn so I can lots of pairs on the go 😉

  483. jenny Whelan says:

Thank you for teaching me to knit socks, after many failed attempts.I need that mug,for when grandchildren visit,I have a rather ruder version 🙊

  484. Lisa says:

Congratulations on 10 years of loveliness, I never in my wildest daydreams thought I would be able to knit a pair of socks!
You have now created another sock monster, I find it very relaxing and love to see my family enjoying picking the yarn for their favourite pair.
I couldn’t have done it without you and your support and encouragement. Congratulations on 10 years of loveliness and many more fantastic years of sprinkling your little bit of magic to us all.
I haven’t knitted very many pairs, my latest count wars five but I won’t be stopping there. Lisa x

  485. Heidi says:

I’ve knit 3 pairs of Winwick Mum Basic Socks since May of 2024. I’m in the State of Connecticut, USA.

  486. Sue Lione says:

I’ve knitted 14 pairs of the basic 4 ply socks in the last year, mainly as Christmas gifts, my husband will only wear hand knitted socks now. I’ve watched your tatt tutorial and am hoping to try that next. Happy 10th sockalong. I am from Chingford in London.

  487. Lyn says:

Congratulations on your 10 years. I didn’t knit a pair of socks last year but the previous year knitted a couple of pairs from your patterns. A pair is now underway using the magic loop method & following your Super Socks book.
    Lyn, northern NSW, Australia.

  488. Jude says:

So many posts – you are popular! Love receiving your blog posts. Keep them coming. I’m an 8 ply sock knitter usually but am dropping everything to cast on a pair of 4 ply socks for when I’m not dog walking.

  489. Elaine says:

Happy birthday Supersocks, and thank you for the marvellous sock tuition, Christine – you have made socks do-able and taken away the fear, and I have learned so much. I have only done two pairs this sock-year but there’s a lot of stuff going on in life here in North London xxxx

  490. Debra says:

Your emails have inspired me to try sock knitting and there was a new sock knitting course starting at my local wool shop today in Staffordshire but I can’t make it and am gutted. I am more of a crocheter but prefer the knitted look of socks. Thank you for all of the advise you give, I am determined to make my first knitted pair of socks before the end of the year! 🧶🧦

  491. On my first, just finished the gusset and now zooming along to the toes 🙂 had to restart as first didn’t work hahaha. But was able to use for permanent tension guide 🙂

  492. From Devon, UK: Congratulations, Christine, on reaching such a wonderful milestone!
Discovering your website has truly opened a new window in my life: from the very first pair of socks I managed to make using your detailed and very beginner-friendly basic tutorial, I now always carry a sock-on-the-go in my bag and car, and am never without one on my needles. This year I have made 8 pairs already – mostly for my family and friends, but always some just to give away! That’s my way of saying ‘thank you’ for all the good things in my life, and for the new skill I have learned through you. Many happy returns of your special sock birthday. Xx

  493. Lynne says:

First of all -Happy 10th birthday! Secondly thank you for giving me the courage to attempt socks and working in the round!
So far, I’ve knitted 14 pairs of “basic” socks – and am aiming for at least 12 more this year. I’m in England and would love to win one of your fab prizes!

  494. Alice from Northumberland says:

Happy Birthday to the Sockalong! I guess I’ve only made one pair of basic socks. And then two adult pairs of contrast socks (beautiful WYS wood pigeon and pennyroyal combination as well as a peacock and blue raspberry combination). And then two versions of the peacock contrast socks for my toddlers who wanted some too 😂. Very grateful to Winwick Mum for all the support and guidance offered.

  495. Congratulations on reaching your 10th birthday. I was always scared of knitting socks, growing up I use to watch a family friend knit socks for her husband and I use to think she was a genius. I knitted my first pair during the first Covid lockdown using your basic pattern with 4ply acrylic yarn 😂. I am so obsessed with knitting socks. Thank you again for all the beautiful patterns. From Auckland New Zealand. ❤️❤️🧶🥢🧦❤️❤️

  496. Carol Sanderson says:

    Happy 10th birthday Christine!!
I stared my first pair of socks using the basic sock pattern in 2018. My first sock I finished but didn’t fit or look right so I’ve kept it and continued on to make a pair. 10 pairs of socks later I still love the basic pattern. I’ve started my second pair of basic since May 24. I only make them for myself and wear them everyday as I have bad knees and wear good athlete joggers. I love my socks they fit my feet perfect and your tutorials are so easy to understand. I’ve always told everyone who asks where I learnt to make socks, Winwick Mum, it’s easy to understand pictures and all. Thank you very much for my addiction to sock knitting. I’m from Newcastle, New South Wales Australia

  497. Ann Small says:

Hi there, I’ve been knitting socks for years for my dad but since he’s not with us any more i knit for myself, family, and friends. I love knitting with four needles. Ive knitted six pairs in the last twelve months, mainly for the church Christmas fare. I’m unable to knit at the moment since I’ve broken my arm. It’s so frustrating so all i can do is plan, and that is what I’m doing to keep my spirits up!

  498. Jayne Davey says:

Happy Birthday – I haven’t made any socks yet, but there on my very long to do list.

  499. Leanna Stoufer says:

I have only knitted a few pairs of socks, but my first pair (3 years ago), and my next pair are Winwick Mum socks. Actually two pairs are in the works — a tiny pair for a friend’s grand-baby (arriving soon), and a pair for me. I just returned from my fourth trip volunteering in Ukraine. Knitting in the spare moments is my creative, relaxing, joyful pastime in the midst of whatever is going on. I met quite a few people there that find relaxation in their knitting!

  500. Pat McClelland says:

I’m onto my fifth pair and it still seems like magic when I finish picking up the stitches and end up with something that is undeniably sock shaped!

  501. Fiona Fitheridge says:

    Casting on today 😄

  502. Sarah says:

A very Happy 10th Birthday, what an achievement “from a small Acorn mighty Oak trees grow” this is true of your mission to impart knowledge to others. I enjoy seeing all that others have accomplished on Facebook. As for myself I have unfortunately only made 3 pairs since last year as I am bogged down with a black pair that are taking forever as ai have lost all enthusiasm for doing them, will finish as they were requested to wear with a business suit although at the rate aim going it might be worn out before I finish. Going to make an effort this week to complete so I can move on. I love the Christmas socks and have made all of them to my daughters delight.
Thank you Christine for all your encouragement, I’m a four pin knitter as I cannot seem to master the small circular despite purchasing two different makes. I blame it on arthritis in my hands.
Long may you continue. From South West of Scotland.

  503. Jacqueline Fitzgerald Close says:

I so love getting your emails. Happy Anniversary to Sockalong for a great 10 years. I’m in San Diego, California and am a beginner to knitting socks so am learning slow but sure. Keep up the good work.

  504. Odette Carcamo says:

Feliz aniversario , ha sido genial encontrar su página y seguir el tutorial de los calcetines … que el éxito les siga acompañando por muchos años más.

  505. Nancy Duggan says:

    Happy Birthday!
I’m a newbie to socks – made my first pair, another single awaits its mate. Casting on a the first few rounds are the biggest challenge!

  506. Miriam Stevenson says:

Hi and Happy Birthday!! I’m writing from rural Galloway in SW Scotland. I’ve knitted 1 of your basic socks in the past year. Love you enthusiasm and love of sharing your knowledge with so many keen knitters. Keep up the great work 🙂🧶🙌🎂🥳

  507. Happy 10th birthday Christine, your pattern books are marvellous, I cannot have enough of them, and the group and you are awesome too! I have knitted about 5 or 6 pairs of the basic pattern since May last year – I have a problem in my hands that is preventing me from doing too much handwork. Thank you for everything!

  508. Becky Treen says:

I love all your pattens and yarn colours. Knitting socks helps my mental well-being and I never leave the house without a bag with my latest WIP. Now I have 2 granddaughters I have been knitting smaller sizes than normal so my count is higher for the last year. Since May 24 I have made 7 pairs of plain and about 4 and a half patterned ones that I make up as I go along.

  509. Trish says:

As a novice knitter have found it easy to follow your patterns and just loving knitting them up

  510. Happy 10th Birthday. Thank you Christine, without you, your fabulous patterns and the wonderful people in the Winwick groups I would never have attempted socks. I’ve done 3 basic pairs since May last year. They are my go to train journey project when visiting friends or my gorgeous daughter at university.

  511. Mary Sue Backus says:

Happy Anniversary! I have your book and read the blog but still haven’t cast on! What’s stopping me? Soon….. I live in Eugene, Oregon in the US.

  512. Hello from Livonia Michigan! I love your books and have knitted only 1 pair of your basic socks but have knitted a few from your books. I also enjoy your project sock book. Thanks for sharing so much of your knowledge. Happy 10th Birthday and hope there are tens more.

  513. Marilee says:

I love your sock books. The instructions are so easy to understand. Thank you so much for being “The Winwick Mum!”

  514. Sarah Finlay says:

Many congratulations on your 10th birthday! It’s always lovely to see everyone else’s creations and pick up tips along the way. Since last May I’ve probably knitted 10-12 pairs of socks ranging from baby’s to men’s size 14. For many tears I’d shied away from knitting socks thinking they were beyond my capabilities. Then I stumbled across your website with it’s clear instructions and gave it a go….. now I’m addicted! Thank you.

  515. Malika says:

    Happy 10th birthday!!
I’ve knitted your basic 4 ply socks 3 times over the years but unfortunately none last year. I’m starting a pair today. TAAT as per normal, also using your very useful video. Thank you for your very clear instructions.

  516. Gill Charlton says:

Congratulations and happy birthday Christine. I’m onto my fourth pair of basic socks since May 24 plus other patterns too. Love knitting socks, they are my go to project when travelling and as an in between project.

  517. Annette Buchan says:

I have made 3 pairs. Still learning to perfect the toe. Followed your super sock guide.

  518. Susan North says:

Happy birthday! What an achievement! You persuaded me that I could knit socks when I met you at Yarndale and you were right – I’ve been knitting them ever since thanks to your detailed patterns and 30cm circulars. I’m on my 6th pair since last May, a good thick pair for my son to take skiing. l’m sitting here in Shropshire with them beside me. Your blog is always welcome here!

  519. Rebecca says:

3 pairs of basic socks (and lots of others too!) by the sea in sunny Devon. Thank you for all the joy you bring! x

  520. Louise Taylor says:

Happy birthday what a lovely achievement. So far I have done 2 pairs of basic socks 🧦 and a few others from the year before.I have to watch how much I knit in a day as I had 3 eye operations in 2022 and nearly lost my sight. I’m still learning but I am enjoying it, im from Halesowen in the West Midlands.

  521. Shearrie says:

Hello I am finally going to cast on my first pair of basic 4 ply socks. Love your blogs and I’m from Staffordshire

  522. Jayne Reid says:

    Oh Christine,
Happy Birthday to you and sockalong 🥳
One of my bestest memories of knitting is attending your your course at Black sheep wools, and learning with you ♥️
Me and my friend tried to knit socks when we were 13…and made tubes 😂
For her 50th, I bought her your book, wool, project book and all the needles etc she would need to knit 🧶 a pair of 🧦
She cried and said it was so personal and her favourite present 🎁
So the sock 🧦 love goes on and I love paying it forward xxx

  523. Claire Rogers says:

Happy 10th sockalong birthday! I’m just casting on my first basic 4ply socks since last May, but I have done several other WM patterns in the last year, including the Ryegrass test knit, which was really great fun!
    I’m in Pembrokeshire, west Wales

  524. Mary Nolan says:

So Lovely!! Hope I win something. I love sock knitting.

  525. Liz Geddes says:

I am up to 19 pairs now. I am officially a sock knitting addict and don’t mind admitting it 🤣

  526. Annie Lawson says:

Happy Birthday to us all! I honestly am not sure how many, as I always have at least one sock on the needles all the time. I reckon about 15 pairs since this time last year. My friend Heather told me about your sterling work when she encouraged me to try socks for the first time, and I have not looked back. In fact I have spread the word! I am currently making some lovely basic 4-ply socks for a friend’s father. I’m on an island off the west coast of Scotland!

  527. Tracey pearsons says:

Happy 10th! Over 50 pairs in last 8 years but only on pair number 3 since last may, been busy with a relocation to Devon. I learnt to knit by following your basic pattern!

  528. Gill says:

I’ve knitted a few pairs of your socks but have just done 1 sock since last year in the basic 4 ply. Happy 10th Birthday from East Yorkshire

  529. Having lost count of the pairs of sock I’ve knitted since I began I now write down the start and finish dates. I am about to cast on my ninth pair of Winwick Mum Socks since May 2024 for the 10th birthday celebration. They will be my emergency socks as I’m in the process of knitting my first Couthie Shawl right now. Many Happy Returns!

  530. Wendy Joy Cayless says:

Just 3 pairs this year. I got into colourwork socks so I knitted more of those but of course I had to knit some Winwick Mum socks too!

  531. Lenore Rhodes says:

What amazing and generous prizes Christine. I love your basic pattern and the other patterns you have released. If this is the 10th birthday celebration the 20th will be a cracker. Congratulations. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌺🌺

  532. Pam says:

Hi Christine, I was a sock knitting phobic until I found you. I have become seriously obsessed with socks to the point that my 3 sons and 4 grandsons probably won’t ever need new socks. Thank you for sharing your experience, thoughts and love of socks with us. My total since last year’s sockalong is 10 pairs

  533. Teresa Teresa Gottshall says:

I am finally making a sock, soon socks and couldn’t be more exciting. This has been a long-time knitting goal. Thanks so much for your wonderful pattern and guidance.❤️

  534. Kim Chappell says:

Happy 10th Sockalong Birthday, greetings from Arizona, USA, and many thanks as always for teaching me how to knit socks! This year I’ve branched out to other Winwick Mum patterns (currently obsessed with Easy Lace), but have made 5.5 pairs of Basic since last May, including the other .5 from my last year’s Sockalong count. Also made 30 mini socks (28 sts, adapted from the Basic pattern with an i-cord hanging loop) as Christmas ornaments — they turned out so much better than I’d hoped, and made wonderful, colorful gifts! Here’s to 10 more years of sock knitting!

  535. Eileen says:

I’ve only made 5 pairs of the basic sock since last May but I started knitting socks a few years ago when I discovered your blog. I was into crochet at the time and hadn’t ever really knitted anything before. Knitting socks opened up a whole new world for me- I will have a go at anything now and have a wardrobe full of jumpers, cardigans, scarves, gloves, cowls, all sorts! I will be for ever grateful. ☺️ Happy 10th birthday. xxx

  536. Susan McDade says:

I came to your blog from Lucy (Attic 24) when she talked about knitting socks. Seems a long time ago now! I haven’t kept count of the number of socks I’ve knitted except for in the beginning of my sock journey. I did do a few for the Yarndale appeal and for the Hospice appeal early on but over time I gave up counting. I’m nearly finished the second of the pair I’m currently doing so I’m off to look out the yarn for a another pair for my son’s girlfriend as the pre ious pair are her favourite socks and looking worse for wear after four years of being well used.

  537. Julie Stockton says:

Christine – congratulations on your 10 years. I have so enjoyed knitting your socks – done loads now and given them away as presents to family and friends. Thank you so much for your generosity in providing the pattern and all the support. You’re a super star. Enjoy reading your blogs and as your only love up the road from me, they’re even more relevant! Keep on keeping on!! Enjoy your birthday.

  538. Lucy Miller says:

Thank you so much! I now knit socks because of your wonderful tutorials. I must have made two, possibly 3 pairs since last year. I tackled your cable sock pattern and I’m now doing colourwork.

  539. Caroline Darrah-Morgan says:

I’m in the Welsh Marches and I found your Sockalong when I was trying to help my daughter with her knitting over the phone in lockdown. Since then I’ve knitted loads of basic socks, but this year only four that I can find photos of – I’ve been experimenting with toe up and cables, but I always have a basic sock on the go that I can knit without thinking. It’s a great pattern. Casting some on for me now in Zauberball but pondering what needle size to use – I made some for a friend and they look great but the fabric is a wee bit open.

  540. Ann Tooke-Kirby says:

Thank you for your inspirational blog. I’ve looked in my project cupboard and have found a ball of pretty stripey sock yarn from Schachenmayr, some DPNs and your super socks book that I must have purchased a long time ago. Taking it all with me on a walking holiday in Cornwall next week – we won’t be walking all the time! Just getting started on my tension square before we go. I’m from Weymouth in Dorset.

  541. Hanh Fort says:

happy 10 years of sock I have bought all the book it very easy to understand thank you

  542. Judi Squirrell says:

  544. Jules says:

I found your pattern 3 years ago and have loved it! Since last May I have been retired and managed to make 4 pairs as Xmas presents and another 2 for myself as they are the most comfortable socks ever! Thank you so much for the pattern xx

  545. Clowes Meg says:

I think I have knit 15 pairs of Winwick Mum socks in the past year . They are my ‘go to’ project and comfort knitting . I always have a pair on the needles and take them with me all the time . Never miss an opportunity to do a few rounds .
Thank you Christine for inspiring so many of us to keep this lovely art alive .
I am based in North Staffs .

  546. Sylvia says:

  548. Anne Jones says:

  549. Teresa Murphy says:

I am knitting my first pair. Thank you.

  552. Claire Smith says:

Hello from Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland! I discovered your fantastic tutorials last September and am on my 8th pair of basic socks. Many thanks, Christine. I never believed I could be successful having failed in the past! I am now an addict with a sizable wool stash! 😂 xx

  553. Alison Fletcher says:

Just back from my hols and about to cast on my second pair of basic socks

  554. Lys says:

I’ve used your Basic pattern as a reference for almost all the patterns I’ve knitted this year, as I convert everything to your 60 stitch cast on formula 🙂 But proper Basic socks, I’ve probably knitted two pairs this year as I’ve been trying out a whole raft of other techniques on my other socks. I’m from the Midlands, UK 🙂

  555. Diane Bowman says:

Happy Birthday! I celebrated by teaching my local library crochet group to knit socks using your amazing basic sock pattern. Thank you so much for inspiring me to go on and encourage others. 🥰

  556. Vicky Carmichael says:

I have made 1 pair of basic 4ply socks since May 24 and have cast on my 2nd pair. I love the basic sock pattern

  557. Caroline King says:

I’ve knitting 3 pairs of your socks they are getting better each time ,will promise to cast on a new pair before the end of May .I really liked your grey and mustard socks ,have you used the long sock pattern but in double knitting ?

  558. Lynne says:

Happy 10th Sockalong birthday to you – and thanks for all your lovely blog posts. I love reading them. I haven’t knitted any socks yet in 2025, but I have knitted a few lovely pairs of basic 4ply socks, and a pair of simple lace socks and a DK pair over the years. Have a wonderful time celebrating your amazing achievements.

  559. Melissa says:

Happy Birthday from upstate NY! Your basic sock pattern is what got me knitting 5+ years ago, and is the pattern I use as the jumping off point for every pair I’ve knit since then. I’ve switched out the heel flap and gussett for a shadow wrap heel as I find it fits me better. If you don’t mind the heel switch, then I’ve knit 9 pairs of basic socks this year, plus an additional 4 that I added a simple slip stitch pattern to the front. Thank you so much for the basic pattern. It made so much more sense to me than the first pattern I tried (and frogged!), and knitting socks has been my go to project ever since.

  560. Lorna says:

Congratulations on the 10th Anniversary of the Sockalong.

I absolutely love your patterns and the detailed tutorials.

I am based in a small village in Wadhurst, East Sussex and have spread the word locally to my fellow knitters.

Knitting socks is no longer daunting and I am now on my 4th pair since commencing in 2024. 😁

I can’t wait to try the new sock pattern, which has recently been launched.

    Happy sock knitting.

  561. Happy 10th Birthday.
I have made multiple pairs of socks over the last 12 months, but only 2 pairs of Basic 4ply, plus the first one of a new pair for the sock-a-long

  562. Joanna Martin says:

I have only knit one basic pair of Winwick Mum socks this year, in this year’s WYS Christmas colour. I am sitting now in a pair of simple cable socks that I knit a couple of years ago and have knit two other pairs this past year!

  563. Louise Beer says:

Happy Birthday! 🎂 I’m on my second pair, I’m a little slower to knit, first pair were with the yellow from yarnsmith & I’m now using the one which is pinks/purples which are coming along nicely.

  564. Elizabeth Daly says:

    Happy 10th Birthday 🎊 🎂
I am making my first ever Basic 4 ply sock as well as following your instructions to knit TAAT. I have accumulated some lovely sock yarn over the years but have failed to make socks I am happy with as I have found that I couldn’t pull the socks up my large calves. I recently had an ah ha moment where I realised it wasn’t my calves being too big but my cast on being too tight. I am now looking forward to wearing my socks when completed & trying out new patterns. loving the colours of the WYS yarn. I am yet to find a supplier for them as I live in country NSW, Australia

Wow!!! I’ve just had a count up, I have knitted 19 pairs with a pair on the needles at the moment, of these I have sold 12 pairs and have another 3 pairs on order. As you can see I love knitting socks, most are knitted to the basic pattern with WYS yarn which I love and can rely on to last and wear well.

I’m on my second pair using your basic pattern, I used it to make my first pair while on a flight and it’s all I want to make now! It was the easiest to understand so that you for all the info you put out for knitters!

In the past year I have knitted 14 pairs, including a lot of basic 4 ply before moving to DK (which I love for speed), Watercress (which had me in knots), lacey and finally easy colourwork, which I luuuv! And all thanks to your patterns, tutorial and community x
