Blogtober 2023 : Day 18

Hello to you, it’s Wednesday so we’re in the middle of the week now.  Thank you for letting me know that I’ve not been boring the pants off you over the last couple of weeks – although I’m really going to be pushing the boundaries today as it’s been another jobs-around-the-house day so not especially exciting!

I do have something nice to show you though …

A pair of pink and green striped socks on wooden sock blockers drying on an Aga lid

They’re finished!  These are a pair of Basic 8ply (DK) Boot Socks and the yarn is West Yorkshire Spinners Colour Lab – Future Dreams.  They’re currently drying on sock blockers on the Aga lids – the covers mean that the heat isn’t too much for the yarn and they’ll be dry very soon.  (Don’t forget that there’s a Top Sock Tips tutorial on sock blockers if you want to take a look.)

I’ve got another pair of socks on my needles now – no photos just yet but I’ll show you tomorrow 🙂

Today’s jobs-around-the-house have involved me going into the attic.  Our attic is not a place that anyone wants to spend any length of time in, and I have been very guilty of shoving stuff up there that I didn’t want to deal with so it’s full of boxes that need a good sort through.  It’s also not quite tall enough to stand up in and has more than its fair share of ancient spider webs and a whopping old wasp’s nest that looks like the Death Star from Star Wars (and is probably nearly as big) …

A large empty wasp nest attached to the joists of a roof

It’s very beautiful though, isn’t it?

Anyway, the reason that I was up in this “paradise” is because not so small daughter said she had Heard Something in the attic.  I was inclined to ignore it and hope that it went away, but that’s not always the best course of action so I waited until she was around (just in case I needed her to rescue me) and crawled my way down the attic towards the part that’s over her bedroom.  There is proper crawling to be done at one point as there are beams holding the joists together so you’ve got to either limbo or get down on your hands and knees to get through.

The good news is that I wasn’t eaten by any terrible attic monster and I didn’t see anything that could have been causing a noise – we had mice in the attic when we first moved in; they wore hobnail boots to make sure that we heard them running around and left a terrible mess – but I couldn’t see anything that might have done that so I crawled back out and went to tell not so small daughter the good news.

We’ve got a large mirror on the landing and as I glanced at myself on the way past, it looked like I’d brought half the cobwebs out with me.  Ugh, I had proper Hallowe’en hair!  And no, nobody needs to see photos of that!

I can hear the rain rattling against the windows – there’s a storm coming in and amber and red warnings around the country so do be careful if you need to be out and about over the next couple of days.  I needed to collect not so small daughter and her boyfriend from Liverpool tonight where they’d been at a social event and it was not fun driving on the motorway in the dark with all the spray, and that’s without the storm being overhead too, so do take it easy if you have to travel.

I’ll be back tomorrow with more sock news, and I expect there may be at least one photo of my purple wellies too! 🙂

We had a wasps nest in one of our air bricks years ago, luckily wasp free, which my husband removed and burnt.
See you had a heads up on Monday’s Yarn Lane about the socks. Although I’m not keen on the colour, the socks look really good.
Glad your loft appears monster free. Could it be birds?

I’ve just been to watch the Yarn Lane show – it was good, wasn’t it? I don’t think it’s birds in the attic as there aren’t any droppings – hopefully if there was something there then it’s gone now that I’ve been up making a racket 🙂 xx

that’s a very impressive wasps nest…I knew what it was as soon as I saw it and I’m pleased that it’s an old one, horrible thing to be dealing with if it wasn’t.
Don’t envy you going on a crawl around up there….the spiders keep me out of our two loft spaces 😳😳😳
love the socks…beautiful colors-I may have to give in and order some if the yarn….🙄🤔

I’ve never been in my attic! I don’t did places where spiders might be. I’ve had walls a few years in the ten over been here so daresay I have at least one nest in mine. I’ve not had bees this year which is unusual.

We don’t get bees in the attic and once the wasps are in, I leave them to it because I know they’ll all die off eventually. The winter is probably the best time for me to be clearing out up there so maybe I need to get myself in gear over the next few months! 🙂 xx

lovely to read your blog after a busy fortnight. Checking the attic sounds brave, I usually send husband! We’ve been dog sitting in Northumberland – stunning scenery and autumn colours, lovely beach walks and visits to interesting places – The Yarn Company in Alnwick is a lovely shop 😀 finished knitting gingerbread socks for a 50th present and gave them along with your brilliant book to encourage friend to have a go. Rather long drive home yesterday in all the wet and wild weather, then off to grandsons 7th birthday today. Time to come up for air tomorrow I think 🤔

I’m glad you’ve had a lovely week, and thanks for passing on the sock knowledge (and the socks) to your friend – we are definitely taking over the world one sock at a time! I’m glad you got home safely and hope you enjoy the party 🙂 xx

As someone with a phobia of cobwebs I enjoyed your post but had to scroll quickly passed the photo. Best wishes
