Carousel Socks
Why knit the Carousel Socks?
The Carousel Socks pattern is brilliant for lace knitting when you don’t want to have to follow every single line of pattern down to the toes. Based on the Basic 4ply Socks pattern, the lace panel at the top becomes eyelet stitches which are repeated down the leg and the foot, making this another simple yet effective pattern, and perfect as a next-step confidence-building pattern for those ready to move on from a basic sock.
This is a great pattern for gift knitting as it doesn’t take as long to knit as you might think. Once you’re past the lace panel, the eyelet rounds are easily memorised and I’d even go so far as to say this would be a great TV knitting pattern – as long as you’re not watching a scary movie or something that takes a lot of concentration to follow!
Pattern features
The cuff is knitted to blend into the lace panel at the top before starting with the eyelet stitches. There’s both a chart and written instructions with this pattern so you can use whichever you prefer – and if you’ve never used a chart before, this is a great opportunity to give it a go with a small lace section. You can compare the written instructions with the chart symbols – and I’m sure you’ll never look back!
If you’re familiar with the Basic 4ply Socks pattern, you’ll recognise the heel flap and gusset-type heel knitted with heel stitch to make a comfy, cushioned heel so there’s nothing new to learn here – most important if this is your first foray into different sock patterns!
Which yarn should I use?
The blue socks in the photo are knitted in West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply in Bubblegum. This shade is now discontinued but Blue Raspberry is very close. The pink yarn is a hand-dyed yarn by The Fibre Fox in shade Clematis.
