Socktember 2026 countdown
It’s Bank Holiday weekend in the UK which means that the end of August has arrived – September is nearly here!
This year on the Winwick Mum blog, September will be known as SOCKTEMBER and I’m so excited! It’s going to be a month of socks on the blog with a new pattern coming out on Tuesday 1 September …
These are the September Socks and I have LOVED designing this pattern! Just a few more days to wait until the pattern is out and with that release, Socktember starts.
What is it all about? Well, it’s about socks – obvs – and it’s about knitting socks for everyone whether you’re new or an old hand. September is a great month for starting something new and it’s a great month for starting new socks! Socktember is going to be for Basic 4ply Socks, the new September Socks pattern and gift knitting as it’s not that far away from peak gifting season, so if you want to start looking through your stash, that’s the type of yarn you’re looking for!
There’s going to be a post on the blog explaining all about Socktember which will also be out on the first of the month, so this is a heads up that there will be two emails that day if you’re on my mailing list. There will be a discount on the pattern for everyone when it releases and a special one for email subscribers – there’s still time to get on the mailing list if you’d like to!

I’ve spent a lot of this week getting ready for Socktember, but did manage to take a few photos of something other than socks!
The sunset was beautiful, it glowed like the sky was on fire. We’ve had a lot of rain and thunderstorms over the last couple of days which we definitely needed, but it’s still a joy to see the sun at the end of the day.
The dog’s favourite field has been ploughed and the way that the farmer had left it for the day made it look like the incoming tide on a beach. The farmer doesn’t bother about keeping the footpath across the field; they just plough it up and then walkers have to wear it in again. The whole field is done now and unfortunately, the furrows are pretty deep so we’ll need to wait until it’s been flattened a bit more before the dog will be able to walk there. We’ll have to find a new favourite field for a bit!
It’s getting dark earlier again now, isn’t it? I was out with the dog later than I’d intended to be and looked up to see a chain of Starlink satellites going up into space. They follow each other in an exact line until they get to a certain height, and then the one at the top of the line disappears – presumably out into space – until they’ve all gone. I’m not thrilled that there’s so much hardware being sent up into space (we can’t seem to keep our own planet tidy, I don’t think we should start sending stuff into space as well), but it is something to see.

Winding down my summer, too. Pet-sitting done until late September. Along with all my knitting groups, I’ve added some volunteer work at the local animal shelter, too. They have had 3 huge intakes recently, and are in desperate need of help with the bowl washing and laundry. I make cat sleeping mats out of leftover acrylic yarn, so they already knew me. I have never felt so useful and needed! A nice warm fuzzy to begin the Autumn!

My eldest daughter keeps sending me photos of cats that need rehoming but with two of our own and her two that come for their holidays, I think four in the house at times is quite enough! You’re doing a good job there, I am sure the shelters are very appreciative of all your help 🙂 xx
Can’t wait to join my first sock along here. I actually just learned how to knit a sock cuff down with the heel and gusset. I have been knitting toe up socks since 2017. I taught myself to knit in 2000 for the explicit reason of knitting socks. None of this was on YouTube at the time. In 2016 was when I first found a YouTube tutorial for toe up socks when I was looking for actual tutorials to see how to knit the heel and gusset that I desperately wanted to learn. All videos I found at the time didn’t give a good view of what was being done. So I gave up until this year when there were more proper visual tutorials that I could learn from.
It’s great that you’ve found resources you can use! I’ve had videos on YouTube for a long time but they’ve been for specific socks rather than the Basic 4ply Socks – all my patterns are based on that so you can still use them but if you were looking for specific information they may not have been what you needed at the time 🙂 xx

I’m an experienced knitter but I loved making the 4 ply basic socks. I added the reinforcements for toes so we’ll see how they last. I’m thinking of making something besides socks in September. I have a vest that’s almost done but needs the armholes and a hood. But I might make socks anyway as I can carry them around the house with me. Love your site.

As I’ve been having a bit of a stressy and busy time lately knitting has been on hold. I don’t do too well during the hot months of the year so am really looking forward to September and the start of Autumn. It heralds my favourite times of the year, Autumn and Winter. Haven’t done a sock along before but will be joining in with this one. So much better to knit when it’s cooler! Really love everything about Winwick mom and the feeling of being connected with everyone.

I learned to knit socks from.your Super Socks book and have made many pairs since. It’s unusual for me not to have a sock on my needles, but for once, I don’t, so roll on Socktember!
