Quick news

Hello, hello, I hope you’re having a great week!

Just a quick post today to let know you a few things …

Firstly – thank you so much to everyone who has entered (and is still entering) the Winwick Mum Sockalong 10th birthday giveaway. It’s been so lovely to read all your comments about your socks, what you’ve been up to and where you are, and I am really glad that knitting socks bring you joy and comfort in so many ways.

There are 10 days of giveaways this year to celebrate the 10th birthday and you can still join in – you need to add your comment to this post –  you have scroll a looong way down now past all the comments but when you get to the bottom, there’s a box where you can add yours and you’ll be included in the next draws.

I’m updating one single post every day with the winners, and that’s the giveaway results post which you can find here.  It’s better for me to do that than write 10 individual winner posts or try to send emails as it’s easy for that information to get missed, and not everyone who reads the blog is on my email list or opens the emails – I quite understand as we all get a lot of them!

It’s been lovely to see so many pairs of the Basic 4ply Socks on the needles too – it’s really made me smile to see your photos on social media and in the Facebook groups – thank you!

Finally, a couple of weeks ago I mentioned my new pattern Ryegrass which I am releasing (or re-releasing, as it was originally in a magazine many years ago) and the date is going to be this Friday, 9 May.  It comes hot on the heels of the Sockalong birthday, but I’ve done that deliberately as it means that it will be included in the birthday discount code – BIRTHDAY10 for 10% off patterns and books in the blog shop, Ravelry and Payhip until 31 May.

Close-up of colorful hand-knitted socks with a bright blue base and intricate red and yellow patterns. The socks rest on a white wooden surface.

I’ll be back on Friday with all the info about the pattern … see you then! xx

I’ve managed one pair of socks with contrasting rib, heel and toe. They were supposed to have been a Christmas Gift but 🤷‍♀️ they got an I.O.U. instead 🙄. Still to start the second pair. Hopefully, he’ll get them before he goes on his Cruise.

I have always been scared to trying socks due to the heel construction, but a wool shop owner convinced me to try and directed me to this website….I am now on the foot section of my first sock and am delighted! what a brilliant website and instructions!

Hello Christine, a happy 10th birthday, I only started knitting socks a few months ago, I completed 1 and now starting on the other, the lady I am knitting them for was very pleased that the one I finished fitted her, it was a challenge I took up and can now say, ‘yes, I can knit socks’ and it was all thanks to you 😊 x

    Hello Christine,
I find it hard to believe that ten years have passed since I joined and started knitting socks! The donated socks at Yarndale, the tiny socks we wore…meeting you, treasured memories and a feeling of belonging to an amazing group…Thank you from my heart.

My sock drawer is overflowing but I can’t stop knitting- it’s an addiction! I thought socks were way beyond my knitting skills until I discovered your Sockalong. Since then I’ve knitted about thirty pairs and I’m still going strong. Looking forward to the latest pattern which looks as impressive as Mosaic. I love a pattern that looks difficult but with your instructions is achievable, even for a fairly novice knitter like myself. Thank you.

I follow your blog and the relevant fb pages AVIDLY ! 😊
I’ve posted before that I’ve only ever made ONE sock (during lockdown and using your basic sock pattern)
However I’ve continued to buy WYS sock wool, including your Christmas specials (typical yarn hoarder! 🤣) and I’ve now dug out my favourite from my stash – Kingfisher – and I’m measuring my foot and getting everything ready to actually cast on. Wish me luck. 😊

Hi Christine, congratulations on the 10th birthday of Sockalong. As a child I watched my mother knit socks on four needles – I never mastered this technique! Fast forward 70+ years yes, really and lockdown. I discovered Winwick Mum, Basic four-ply socks and the shirt circular needle – eureka 💡! I have worked my way through the WYS ‘Country Birds’ collection, plus a few more. I am now an official ‘sock snob’ and will only wear my own creactions. Thank you so much.

Hello and happy birthday! I made a pair of top down socks a few years ago, however have hit a massive brick wall mental block and cannot for the life of me manage a heel turn any more. I’m blaming the menopause! I will persevere as I’ve bought plenty of sock yarn to try!

  13. Annie Browne says:

I have knitted several pairs of socks now, mainly for my sisters my granddaughter and of course me! The one thing I seem to struggle with is doing the kitchener stitch at the end. I’ve yet to get it right. Yours looks so neat and I wish I could get it like that.

Thank you for your patterns and tutorials. My first pair of socks was done using your basic pattern and your brilliant sockalong tutorials. Since then I’ve made about 20 pairs, including cables, and they’re all for me! I wear handmade socks everyday in winter. They have been a godsend in the cold north east of England. Knitting socks is so calming. I’ve always got a sock on the needles. So thank you again!

At least 36 pairs and counting. Thank you so much Christine, for all the inspiration and help. I have a drawer full of sock yarn so onward and upwards! 😀x

Knitting socks helped me through a really tough time. My husband had to have chemotherapy for bowel cancer. Knitting socks whilst waiting for him(4 hrs ish) helped me get through it. Thank you winwick mum, you helped me more than you will ever know.

  22. Kogi Naidoo says:

Happy Anniversary. Your basic sock tutorial got me started on socks and I was able to understand the construction to the point I can now knit without a pattern for any size foot. Thank you – I will always be grateful.

    Happy birthday 🥳
I’m onto my 40 something pair of socks since 2022. It took me ages to make the first pair but after joining this group and learning from its members I’m improving all the time. Long may it continue.

  38. Debbie Campbell says:

Happy 10th Sock-along! Gosh, 10 years. This might explain why I am unable to close my sock drawer properly! Over the years I have taught myself to knit socks on DPN,s, magic loop and short circulars using your fab patterns with super clear instructions. Knitting the Christmas socks started with the Candy Cane pattern and has become a tradition(obsession)! I loved the Adeline pattern which came in a gift box from BSW. WYS yarn, pattern, stitch marker, tea flower and a recipe card for white chocolate muffins or biscuits. The perfect excuse to sit with a cuppa and knit socks.
I look forward to the Ryegrass pattern and wish you many more happy sock-alongs.

  39. Jean Sharp says:

Ryegrass pattern is in a magazine insert that I have had years. Of the four patterns in it I have only made the Carousel and Boxy Rib patterns, lots of Boxy Rib, as it’s a nice fuss free pattern when making socks for men.

  40. Tracey Pearsons says:

Happy 10th birthday! I found you about 8 years ago having never knitted before. I’ve done 50 plus pairs now, one of my fave things about autumn – the socks coming out!

I began my sock knitting journey with your basic pattern and always return to it. In my opinion it’s the best pattern, fits my feet so well. Congrats on 10 years
