Winwick Mum Sockalong 6th birthday giveaway results

Hello, hello, I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend!

I’m here at last with the Winwick Mum Sockalong 6th birthday giveaway results – wow, it was so lovely to hear from so many of you!  I have read each and every one of your comments – here on the blog, on Facebook, Instagram and through email, and I have sat with a huge grin on my face (and sometimes a tear in my eye) as you have told me about what sock knitting means to you and to those around you.  It also appears that I may have forgotten to mention in the Sockalong tutorials just how addictive sock knitting can be … sorry about that (sorrynotsorry)!

What’s meant a huge amount to me this year is the number of you who discovered sock knitting through lockdown.  It’s been a tough year for everyone – I doubt that anyone has got through the last twelve months or so unscathed, and even those of us who thought that we would be fine because we’re used to working at home will have had to re-think that as our spaces became communal spaces for other family members, and worries about our health, our families, our finances and our futures became bigger as our ability to get out and about to retain perspective became smaller.

I can’t tell you what it means to know that my tutorials have been able to offer something to help keep the anxieties at bay, to allow gifts to be made, sock drawers to be filled with the best kind of socks, for new skills to be discovered, old skills to be rekindled and for online friendships and support to be something to hold onto when it seemed like our lives were closing in on us – it truly means more to me than any of the download figures or statistics that we bloggers are supposed to be interested in!  Knowing that you are knitting socks for whatever reason, and that I might have been able to help you do that, fills my heart to bursting, and I hope that I will be able to continue to help people to knit socks for many years to come!

Anyway, enough of me and my overflowing emotions … you want to know if you’ve won!

Let me remind you of this year’s prizes …

An orange book on a cream background surrounded by a mug, tea and coffee bags, a pack of knitting accessories, a purple pin badge and a ball of blue and white striped yarn

There’s a signed copy of Super Socks, a ball of Winwick Mum yarn in one of the new Seasons colours, a pack of accessories to help you get your sock knitting started, a knitter’s mug with some drinks to go with it and a Winwick Mum Sockalong badge.

I’ve put the number of comments into the Random.org generator which has given me two numbers, one for each of the prizes – but I’m going to make you wait just a little bit longer whilst I tell you how many pairs of socks I’ve counted up this year 🙂

This is never going to be an accurate figure because I try to give my pattern away to anyone who will stay still for long enough to take it, so it’s only for fun because it’s the one time of the year that I can ask you – but it’s a bit of fun that I do enjoy very much!

In 2016 there were 3,500 pairs, in 2017 there were 4,500 pairs, in 2018 there were 3,360 pairs, in 2019 there were 1,040 pairs, in 2020 there were 1,385 pairs and this year you’ve told me about

1,270 pairs

giving a new 2021 total of

15,055 pairs of socks!

Wow wow WOW!  That’s a phenomenal number of pairs of socks that you’ve been able to tell me about!  The number has gone up over the last couple of years, and I am sure that’s down to  the first lockdown and people (re)discovering their crafting skills.  I also think that it’s not as high as the first two years because there are so many of you now who have the confidence to move on to other patterns and have been able to show others how to knit socks.  You’ve been able to pass those skills on in person – or more likely, recently, over internet video calls! – and that makes me so very happy as that’s how our yarn connections grown.  So rather than that there are less people knitting socks (and I can tell you from my blog figures that really isn’t the case! 🙂 ), I think we can be quietly confident that we sock knitters really are taking over the world.  It’s most definitely an over-excited high five moment!

And now, let me tell you who I’m going to be sending these prizes to.  You’ve waited quite long enough!

The first one out of the generator is Anna (Polly), who will hopefully be spurred on to finish that first pair with a new ball of yarn ready to cast on!  Anna, I’ll send you the Spring Green yarn as I’m looking out of my window at all the vibrant greens in the garden and think it will be perfect for this time of year.

Next out of the random generator is Avie, and a ball of Summer Sunset will be winging it’s way to you along with the other prizes.

Congratulations Anna and Avie – please can you email me so that I can arrange to send your prizes out to you?

I’m sorry to those of you who weren’t able to leave a comment – the comments are moderated anyway because of spam, but apparently my blog platform has eaten a few of them before I could even get to read them.  I’ve tried to find out why this might be, and it looks like it might be something to do with cookies being enabled on your computers; some browers block them automatically and lots of us choose not to allow cookies but it seems that you need them to be enabled to comment here, so that might explain it.  Some websites won’t let you access them without enabling cookies but too much background storage does slow your computer down so I regularly clear mine out – this articlewill help you if you haven’t done it before.

Thank you again to everyone who has knitted socks using the Sockalong pattern and tutorials whether you commented or not – I’m just so pleased that I’ve been able to celebrate this socky birthday with you!
