Winwick Mum Sockalong 6th birthday

Happy birthday to you,

Happy birthday to you,

Happy birthday dear Sockalong,

Happy birthday to you!

A pair of feet modelling blue stripey socks. The model is standing on a stone flag surrounded by plants. The words on the photo say Winwick Mum Sockalong 6th birthday

Well, can you believe it?!  It’s six years since the Winwick Mum Sockalong started and I couldn’t be happier to know that the tutorials and the pattern are still so useful to people who are just starting out on their sock knitting adventures.

When you create something like the Sockalong, then of course you hope that it will be more than a short firework fizzle in the endless sky of the internet universe, but I can honestly tell you that apart from wanting to make sure that I tried to make it as easy as possible for someone to knit a pair of socks, there was never any grand plan – certainly never any six year plan! – and it has been wonderful to see how everything has evolved.

If you’re new to the blog, you might wonder what has evolved in those six years …  Well, in the same year as the tutorials were written and published on the blog (always with the intention of them being freely available on the blog for anyone who wanted to use them), I turned them into paperback form as Super Socks for those who couldn’t or didn’t want to be online all the time, and also e-book form for those who prefer that format.  I started the Winwick Mum Sockalong Facebook group so that people could ask questions in real time and that’s been amazing – there are thousands of people from all over the world in this group and thanks to the magic of time zones and people’s generosity in helping others to learn, this really is a group that works in real time – whatever the time!  There’s also the Winwick Mum Knit n Natter group on Facebook which came about as those who were knitting socks also wanted to chat, to share other project pictures and to just connect with other people.  Both groups have been quite a lifeline during our recent lockdown situation, and it’s been brilliant to see how many people have decided that now is the right time for them to be learning to knit socks.

What else?  Well, a bit later on I wrote More Super Socks for people who had knitted their first basic pairs and wanted to move onto a different pattern, but still felt that other patterns were a step too far.  It contains four of my in-depth tutorials (with videos!) and four exclusive patterns which are more wordy than many you will find, but those extra steps have made it easier for people to step out of their comfort zones and to branch out with their knitting.

I’ve also won a few awards now (you can see them down the left hand side bar – I’m very proud of them!), I’ve been delighted to be invited to write articles and design socks for magazines, yarn shops and of course, my favourite yarn company, West Yorkshire Spinners!  What I never could have imagined those six years ago and best of all is that I’ve got my very own Winwick Mum yarn designed in collaboration with my lovely friends at West Yorkshire Spinners, and I have loved seeing it being knitted up, knowing that people have enjoyed using it and have been able to support their local yarn shops by buying it.  And let’s not forget all the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made along the way too … it truly has been an incredible time!

It still blows me away to think about everything that has happened over the last six years.  I have been very blessed, and I never forget that how much of that is down to you – thank you for knitting the socks, for sharing the tutorials with others who want to learn, for giving your time to help others once you have learnt yourself, for buying my books and my yarn … thank you! xx

So what happens now?  Well, the Sockalong tutorials are staying on the blog for free – I have always said that if someone has the money to buy the yarn and needles or buy the book then I would much rather than they bought the yarn and got started – so there’s no change there.  Super Socks is still available for anybody who wants to buy a paperback or ebook version.  More Super Socks, the follow-on book with more techniques and patterns, is also still available in paperback and e-book versions.  West Yorkshire Spinners are still producing Winwick Mum yarn which is available from WYS stockists worldwide and now there are two collections, so that’s eight colourways to choose from.  There are some more videos on my YouTube channel, but because I move at a snail’s pace where videos are concerned, it’s taking some time to get everything I want to finished 😀

Another thing that hasn’t changed is the Winwick Mum Sockalong birthday giveaway.  Every year, I get to do this and every year I think how fortunate I am to be able to even think about it!

As usual there are two prizes …

There’s a signed copy of Super Socks, a ball of Winwick Mum yarn in one of the new Seasons colours, a pack of accessories to help you get your sock knitting started, a knitter’s mug with some drinks to go with it and a Winwick Mum Sockalong badge.

An orange book on a cream background surrounded by a mug, tea and coffee bags, a pack of knitting accessories, a purple pin badge and a ball of green and yellow striped yarn

An orange book on a cream background surrounded by a mug, tea and coffee bags, a pack of knitting accessories, a purple pin badge and a ball of blue and white striped yarn

The yarns that you can see pictured with the prizes are Spring Green and Winter Icicle, but don’t worry if they’re not your colours as I have one of each of the Seasons colours and can swap the ball if you win and you don’t want one of those pictured.  I am very accommodating! 🙂

Four balls of yarn - one green striped, one pink striped, one blue striped and one brown striped on a cream background,

You can find out more about the yarn colours – pictured above from the left are Spring Green, Summer Sunset, Winter Icicle (at the top) and Autumn Leaves (underneath) – through the posts I wrote about the yarn when it was launched earlier this year.  The first post about the collection is here, the colours and inspirations post is here, and the post about the patterns I wrote to go with the yarns is here.

Also included in the prize is an accessories pack.  There are LOADS of useful accessories in this pack – sadly not in a more imaginative colour – but they’re great for someone who is just starting out on their sock adventure, or perhaps needs a few more things to add to their own toolkit.

Grey knitting accessories spread out on a cream background

There’s a needle gauge with a ruler (perfect for those tension swatches! 😉 ), a tape measure, locking stitch markers, yarn spools (ideal for colourwork), wool needles, a cable needle, stitch holders, row counters and two different sizes of needle protectors (just the thing if you’re using one of those really tiny short circulars!).  That’s a lot of kit in one bag, isn’t it?  I think we can forgive it for being grey!

To keep you going whilst you’re knitting your socks, there’s a mug with a sachet of hot chocolate, a coffee bag (I have it on good authority from the coffee drinkers in the house that these ones are really good!) and because I drink loose leaf tea these days and didn’t think you’d thank me for tea leaves in your parcel, I’ve included my other favourite tea which is Turmeric Gold.  If it sounds a bit healthy, trust me that it tastes better than it sounds – at least give it a go!

The mugs are a generous gift from Peter at Express Mugs who got in touch to ask if I’d like to some mugs from their huuuuuge range to add to my giveaway.  I think that a brew is pretty much compulsory when you’re knitting, so I was delighted to choose two knitting mugs to be able to give to you.  Thank you very much, Peter!  Please do go and take a look at their range if you know someone who knits (there are more than these two!), crochets, bakes, golfs, does yoga, is a relative … oh, there are LOADS of them!

A hand holding a mug with To Knit or Not To Knit.. that is a silly question written on it. In the background are tea and coffee bags

A hand holding a mug with Wool you just let me knit in peace written on it. In the background are tea and coffee bags

There is, as always, a signed copy of Super Socks.  If you’re new to the blog and to the Sockalong, then Super Socks is the paperback version of the Sockalong tutorials that you can find if you click the purple picture in the top right hand corner of the blog.

An orange Super Socks book lying on a wooden table. To the left is a partly knitted sock, to the right is an orange mug

The book contains the same information as the online tutorials but is set out by needle type rather than across sock sections as the online tutorials are.  It’s a good big size to prop open with your brew (and I’m giving you a mug to do just that – handy, eh?!) and there are pages at the back to make notes.

There is just one sock pattern in there – the Basic Socks  pattern – given in both 4ply and 6ply versions, and this is because this is a book for beginners.  The point of the book is that it’s a tutorial, the best way I could think of for you and I to sit together and knit a pair of socks without confusing everything by trying to cram lots of other patterns in there as well.  You can go and find other patterns at any time, but my intention with Super Socks and the Sockalong tutorials is to help you knit your first pair so that you understand what you are doing and you feel like a sock knitting superstar when you put them on your feet!

If you want to see inside the book, take a look at this post here as it shows you what’s in there and how the book was put together.  If you want to see the online tutorials as well so that you can compare, and check out my writing style if you’re a Winwick Mum newbie, you can find those here.

The last item is the Winwick Mum Sockalong badge which goes with both prizes – ideal for project bags and also for wearing to festivals (when we can go to them again) so that you can spot other Sockalongers.

A purple pin badge with Winwick Mum Sockalong engraved on it in silver

What do you think?  Does that look like something you’d like to have winging it’s way into your letterbox?  Here’s how to enter the giveaway!

For the last five years, I’ve been asking you to tell me how many pairs of Sockalong socks you knitted since the last Sockalong birthday.  I’ll never know for sure how many pairs of socks have actually been knitted using the Basic Socks pattern and tutorials, but it’s nice to get at least some idea so this year will be continuing the tradition of the Annual Sock Count.  So far, our running total through the blog stands at 13,385 pairs – how many more have been knitted this year?!  It’s not a competition with previous years, it’s just a bit of fun (and might also tell me how close we are to really taking over the world with hand-knit socks 😉 )

To enter the giveaway, please comment how many pairs of basic Sockalong socks (not other patterns, please) you have knitted since May 2020.  Don’t worry if you’re still making you first pair or are about to cast on, just write that information and your comment will count too.  Because there’s a choice of yarn, don’t forget to tell me which one you would like too!

Entries to the giveaway will close at 8pm BST on Friday 7 May 2021 and I will let you know the winners as soon as possible after that time (it may get to Saturday or even Sunday but I won’t have forgotten! 🙂 ).  I am happy to post the prizes anywhere in the world so don’t feel that you can’t be part of this because you don’t live in the UK.  Don’t worry if you don’t have a Google or blog account to leave a comment, you can leave it as “anonymous” but don’t forget to put your name in the comment so that when I post the winners I’ll be able to identify you so that you can get in touch for your prize (and please do come back to check if you’re a winner)!  Oh, and also don’t worry that your comment doesn’t show straight away – the comments are set for me to check them before they upload to the blog to make sure that no spam gets through so they are all safely stored in my blog messages until I’ve seen them.  I’ll make sure they’re all uploaded on time!

Happy birthday Sockalong, here’s to many more years of socking all over the world!

Haven't managed to cast on the basic sock yet because I knitted my first socks over 20 years ago and then started again 9 years ago. I love all the colours in the range.

  12. Heidijo says:

I surprised myself 14 pairs completed and 1 on the needles, I very rarely knit other types of socks as the heel flap and gusset fit so well. This group has been a life saver over the last year the highs and lows reminding me that we we all in it together.
    Thank you.

  13. Heather M says:

Happy birthday! 🎂 I've made 3 pairs and have a 4th on the needles just now. I'd like the spring or summer yarn please. And thank you for sharing your skills so I can be more confident in my skills 🙂

I am a newbie who fell into knitting my first pair of socks when I saw some sock wool on offer from a craft site. I started my first pair at the beginning of April and now just finished my fourth (but have wool for 5 more!). I love the sock along and the basic pattern is brilliant. Julie West

  15. Kath says:

What an achievement Christine! It's so lovely knowing you are always there to help whether through the tutorials or the groups. I have knitted three pairs of your socks in the last year and I would love the summer sunset sock yarn.

  19. Claire says:

Just completed my very first sock and currently shaping the gusset on its neighbour…so that'll be half a pair from me in 2020! The great thing is I bought the wool and needles years ago to try and knit socks but at the time my attempt was so bad I gave up. Then in April 2021 after finding your Sockalong pattern, posts and videos I got that wool out all over again and succeeded. Yeh! Can't wait to buy some multi coloured wool to knit my second pair because plain beige is really not my thing. Thank you for all the content mentioned above which has successfully started my sock journey.

  20. Liz says:

Technically 2 pairs, but more likely 4 (I used the eye of partridge heel for 2 pairs). The Winwick mum basic sock pattern tends to be my go to, as I always have a hard copy to hand, saving me from the screen! I really like the 'Spring' colourway, as it really encapsulates the colours at the moment; glossy bluebell leaves, pale primroses, grass green and the like.

  21. Carol Fieldhouse says:

Two pairs since last year- one a Basic pair and one a Basic pair using a pattern that I bought- but didn’t fancy their socks pattern, so I used yours!!! I also have four single socks knitted and ready to have their “pair” done… so I don’t get bored!!

  22. KJ says:

I can’t believe how fast time is passing, happy 6th birthday! Since last year I have knitted 6 pairs but only 1pair for me, I am lucky to have such amazing knit worthy people in my life. I would like the Autumn Leaves colourway please, I would keep these for me lol

Happy 6th Birthday 🎂 I hope you've celebrated with cake and a cuppa. I had to go to my photo library to check (my son thought it would be a good idea to keep a yearly album of what I knit during the year, turns out it's quite a lot!) and since last May I've knitted 18 pairs of basic socks. What can I say? It's been a long year in lockdown and I made socks for Christmas as they were easier to post to family we weren't allowed to visit. Thank you for your blog, it brightens my day when it arrived in my in box.Regards, Pat Williams

Thank you for your fabulous easy to follow instructions 😊

  99. Chris says:

I’ve made 6 pairs (2 given as gifts) but then got ‘hooked’ on crocheting Lucy’s blankets so haven’t made any for a while. Funnily enough, I ordered 2 balls of WYS sock yarn only last night to start more socks! I already have the Super Socks Book, which I can highly recommend.

Congratulations on 6 years of Winwick Mum Sockalong. I found you completely by accident late last year when browsing the Black Sheep Wools site. I hadn't knitted socks for 40 years but was totally inspired by your incredibly clear instructions so I bought a small circular needle and some wool. I've managed 2 pairs so far and I plan to carry on. I really enjoy reading your blog. I would choose the summer yarn, if I were lucky enough to be picked. Jacqui Birnie (Warrington)

Thank you! I would be thrilled to win Summer Sunset! Thank you for the inspiration and joy in every knit and purl. Happy birthday! I used your tutorial for my first ever pair of socks and it was invaluable. Even if I am knitting another pattern, I tend to refer back to your tutorial to do the heel. I am a pretty slow knitter, so have only made one pair this year. However, I have just got some Hue Loco yarn from a friend and that will become my next pair.

  125. Emily says:

I knitted my first ever pair (for myself) this year, and I'm almost done my second pair (for my bf). I'm hoping to make lots more for parents/friends. Thanks for writing such a lovely tutorial!

  137. Flavoursafloat says:

Wow 6 years!. Im a relative newbie then because I started knitting my first pair of Basic Socks a month into the first lockdown in the UK. Since then I've knitted 15 pairs!! Must be an addiction going on there. Some have been for me or the SOH. Some have been presents last Christmas and some I gifted just because I could. I wouldn't have got this far if it wasn't for the Sockalong tutorials. If I'm lucky enough to win I dont mind which colour yarn. I'll let you choose. Here's to the next 6 years!

  138. Kristi D. says:

Congratulations on 6 years and I am thankful to have found you 4 years ago. Congratulations Christine!

You know I love your patterns and always prefer to knit a plain pattern with pretty wool. Knitting socks keeps my anxiety at bay and gives my hands something to do – when I refer new knitters to your blog I'm always so pleased when they come back to me to tell me that they've accomplished their first pair of socks.

I have knit : 10 in fingering weight and 5 in 6 ply for a total of 15 pairs since July 2020.

Enjoy your Bank Holiday today and if I am fortunate enough to win I'd choose the pretty Autumn Leaves colourway.

  146. Jo Williams says:

Gosh has it really been six years! Happy Birthday Winwick Mum, I joined the FB group when I got made redundant in 2015 and had time on my hands for learning something new. I had knit before but crochet was my thing. That 1st sock changed all that! I didn't make many socks last year as I had a tub full, but Christmas and the pandemic changed that and I needed and easy project to work on over a very strange festive season. So this year I'm on pair 18. I always use my version of your basic sock pattern as I learnt very quickly patterned socks are lovely to look at but not comfortable to wear (for me anyway) so if it ain't broke why fix it! Happy Birthday Christine and thank you so much, you really did change my life and helped me in ways you would never know. Thank you

  147. Treva Epple says:

I am so happy you published all of this over the 6 years. I haven't been knitting too long (a few months over a year), and I always look for the basics first before I do the fancy. I have one sock on my needles, but I'm not worried about finishing because your instructions are so good. I can't wait to finish my socks and wear them with pride. Also, I really love to read your blog. I walk with my dogs and I can always relate to all of your stories. Thank you for all that you do. I love the Winter Ice yarn.

  154. Avie says:

Happy 6th Birthday Sockalong! Six years of knitting joy you have given people Christine – that’s quite an accomplishment in this current miserable old world. I have knitted half of one sock! It ground to a halt when Janice died and also because I was at the heel turn and my brain froze. In the last week however, I have given my sock-self a stiff talking-to and have turned the heel and am now shaping the gusset, all stitch-markers in place and amazingly, so are the stitches! Am so proud of myself and grateful to you and the marvellous Sockalong family I belong too. Am now doing starting something I never thought I’d be able to do – build a sock-yarn stash. Thank you Christine (Summer Sunset is gorgeous). Avie xx

  155. Unknown says:

Hello Bet here. I started making socks this year so since May 2020 I have made 8 pairs of Winwick Mum basic sock, all with WYS yarn. I just ring the changes so each pair look a little different. Thank you for starting this group, I would never have had a go at socks without your tuition, and I have knitted for 60+ years. Thanks Christine.

Hello Christine. I discovered your book last year and made a pair of basic socks for myself before Christmas and am now making a pair for my husband. The book has helped me a lot . Thank you. I would choose the Autumn colour.

  197. Margie says:

Haven't been doing as much knitting this year as I did the year before so am still working on my first pair. Have learned the 2 at a time, so no one sock thing! Happy Birthday and Take care

  198. Berji's domain says:

I am thrilled you took on the challenge of creating an easy- to -follow tutorial on how to knit socks and were generous to make it free. I've made 3 1/2 socks following the basic pattern to date. (The other half is getting cast on today.) I love both the spring green and winter icicles yarns. The colors are gorgeous!

  199. Unknown says:

Hi, Happy birthday to your baby. I have knitted one pair since May 2020. I knitted another pair before then and I'm just about to start my third pair. Thank you so much for holding my hands along this journey. X

i worked 10 pair of socks with circular needles and one with dpn (it's not for me) now i'm trying to do more and i finished a pair of socks with braid and i have started one with a lace pattern

I love the new WYS seasons yarns – if I win I’d knit myself a pair as vey note knitted myself a pair during the last year!

  202. Jo cav says:

Happy birthday! I have made 3 pairs since I found sock along in August, first items I have knitted since I was a kid! Such an easy to follow tutorial, I was so happy with myself when I made my first sock, I thought I would never manage to complete 1 let alone 3 pairs, thank you xx
I would love to knit a pair in summer sunset for my husband.

  203. Unknown says:

What a wonderful thing to celebrate! You were so generous to help me understand how to use your tutorial to recreate a Christmas stocking from one my mum knit many many years ago! Since then, I really got the knitting bug and I've been so anxious to start knitting my first pair of socks… likely to cast on some time this month or next. You're so supportive and inspiring. The Summer Sunset is my favorite of your beautiful yarns!

  204. Briana says:

Happy Birthday! One pair of socks in progress…work is getting in the way. Surprise me on the color. Briana Ruckart

  205. Unknown says:

    Knitted two pairs for small person! Always love reading your cheery posts and gardening tips. Keep making sock knitting fun and thank you, Ruth W. Spring has Sprung so let's your birthday celebrate with Spring shades! ;

  206. Claire says:

Wow, congratulations on going strong for 6 years! I only started socks less than a year ago, guided by your advice and will admit my basic sock count stands at a woeful one. I made my first pair for my mum but then moved onto challenging myself a little more with patterns and the Christmas 2020 designs (couldn't resist the whole kit and caboodle, although I'm still scared to attempt Robin). Five pairs in now but all in the spirit of Fearless Knitting you advocate, although I'd argue every pair is a sockalong as each is grounded in the tutorials on your blog (I trust those more than patterns that can be rather…odd!). I too am deeply grateful for this resource and your kind advice.
Long may the Sockalong thrive! My next pair will be from the Seasons pattern book (wonderful!), with your blog as an open tab on my browser as ever (forever wishing I had it on paper) -it truly is an invaluable reference point for those woolly-brained moments!
And what a prize! All that's missing is the biscuits.

  207. Grain of sand. says:

Happy 6th Birthday. After a shaky start I have knitted four pairs, first pair don't have identical toes, second pair had the gussets going off at a tangent but got help from you, third pair I am delighted with and fourth pair so confident I did them for a friend. Itching to get started with a new pair. x

  208. Jan Maier says:

I've never knitted a pair of socks but long to do so. I'm scared though. I've been a beginner knitter for several years with various life altering changes getting in the way. I've followed your blog for a couple of years. I love the way you write about knitting and your day to day life. Truth be told, I'm an Anglophile stuck in Connecticut, USA!

  209. Jan Maier says:

PS. I'd take any season of yarn! Whatever it is will be my first socks!!!!!

  210. Skylark says:

Well, this is a happy coincidence! I've only just found you (from Lucy aka Attic 24) and joined the Sockalong FB group (which is how I found out about the giveaway). I've downloaded the pattern, read the prep posts and ordered my yarn and needles. So as soon as they arrive I will be venturing into my first pair of socks which I hope to make for my daughter's birthday in June. If I was lucky enough to be chosen as a winner, I would like the Autumn Leaves yarn colourway. Thank you so much – what a fab idea! ~ Stef Adams

  211. jetset says:

Happy Birthday! I found your blog in the past year when I was upset with how a pair of socks turned out and decided I needed my hand held on re-knitting them. I became a mom shortly before the pandemic started so I'm still finishing my first pair of socks whilst juuggling my little one but am already planning the next pair! Ideally in Spring Green from winning your knitting package 🙂

So happy to find you and this community, happy knitting! Jessica aka jetset

  219. Roz says:

Happy birthday. Sadly I haven't had the chance to make many socks this year. Despite Covid-19 I just can't seem to fit everything in. I can't believe it is May already, where does the time go to? Anywhoo, I have managed one pair, plus one and a bit socks. I keep trying to alternate it with a shawl I am knitting, but after a bit of a disaster with a crochet throw, having had to frog at least 8 rows, I am even further behind than I should have been. Oh well, tomorrow is another day……. it is another day I hope! 😉 I love the spring green, but if I win I would be more than happy with any of them.

  220. Margaret Jeffrey says:

Three quarters of the way through my first sock – getting towards the "be brave" part!

I’ve knitted my first 3 pairs of socks this year and am about a dozen rows awayfrom finishing my 4th. I love all the colours but Spring is my favourite. What a great set of prizes!

Happy 6th birthday. Wow I can’t believe it is that long I’ve been enjoying your blog. I’ve only managed 1 pair this time as I had a lot of other knitting stuff on the go. How ever I have my sights on a few more once I get this “grand baby “, knitting out of the way. The icicle blue is a lovely colour. So is the green fields. Thank you

  226. knitty44 says:

Hi Christine. Congratulations on your "6th" Birthday. That has flown by. I am embarrassed to say I am still knitting my first pair.Just need lots of practice, my challenge for this year. Happy birthday to this wonderful group. I have knitted 28 pairs of socks since May 2020. Your pattern is great. I sell the socks in a cooperative I belong to.

  233. Karla Morones says:

Hello! Happy birthday! I am a little embarrased to say I have not knitted any socks since May 2020. Actually I have started several times but I get so intimidated by the heels. I try to find help online and there are so many different types and I've gathered they all have their ups and downs. I believe though if I win any of your prizes that would definitely give me the motivation I need to finish a pair of socks. I love all the colors.

  234. Unknown says:

Happy birthday! I knitted two pairs and gave them to my son’s girlfriend for Christmas. She won’t take them off and wants more so I’ll have to get my needles out again. I know she’d love the Autumn leaves colour way. They were the first socks I had ever knitted, so thank you for giving me the confidence and guidance.

  235. Claire H says:

Happy birthday Sockalong! Long may you continue. Knitting socks is an ongoing habit of mine now and it is to the original basic sock pattern that I regularly return though I do use other patterns. Most of the socks I knit are given away – they are a blessing for the feet. As for many pairs I have knitted – that is a difficult one to answer because I cannot remember how many pairs I knitted. I reckon about six pairs using the basic pattern. WYS signature 4ply has become my favourite sock yarn – such beautiful colours that compliment each other so well! I have indulged in some of the Winwick Mum sock yarns too. I used Wildflower and Brightside to knit socks for friends with cold feet while the original Fairy Lights (without the sparkle) went down really well with the females in my family and I still have enough of the yarn left to knit to knit myself a pair for next Christmas! Thank you for promoting sock knitting and creating such clear instructions and patterns. Without your resources, I would never have discovered the joy of knitting socks. x

  236. Gillian says:

I have made two pairs of socks thanks to your basic sock book. One pair for me and one for my hubby. He liked them so much he wanted another pair which I have almost finished. So that's 3 pair. They helped me through a difficult time during lockdown, as did reading your blogs. Love them. Winter or autumn colours are my favourite. I am truly hooked on knitting socks. Small circular needle next challenge. Thankyou for the lovely blogs.

  237. katrit says:

I am on my seventh pair since last May! I love your pattern and its my go to. I have it printed and in every sock project bag. I can't thank you enough for all the tutorials and help I needed at the beginning of my sock quest. 🙂

  238. Jennie says:

Happy Birthday 11 socks here this year!!

  239. diaryofadizzygirl says:

At the moment – half a pair. I started them, got to the first half of the foot and then realised that they didn't fit and after all the problems I'd had, I suspected that the yarn was telling me that it just didn't want to be socks. So, I've frogged them back to the ribbing and re-knit with another yarn.

  240. Anonymous says:

Happy Birthday! I have cast on for a pair of socks since May 2020, but have not

I love the winter color way.

Hi. 😊 Happy birthday. I am currently on my 26th pair since May 2020 (first knee highs) I had some amazing support through your sockalong Facebook page with my first pair in 2019. I may have a little addiction. Hahaha.

  247. Paddy Garrett says:

Isn't it amazing how things can snowball! Congratulations on all your success! I only use your basic pattern and have knitted 12 pairs over this past year, starting with 2 pairs for my sister who came for a ten day recuperation visit in late summer, I'm in South Africa, and got stuck for 3 months because of the lockdown! She felt the cold very badly and really needed warm socks. This was my catalyst and included some scrappy socks too which was good fun.Sadly,I cannot buy your yarn in South Africa as I do not know of any stockists who keep it!

  248. Lynne Chinnock says:

  252. Mary says:

Hooray for you! I have bought your first book and several skeins of your yarn – except the new collection as it seems to be stuck on a ship but I’ll keep looking. I haven’t started any socks yet. I’d love the spring or summer color ways.

Knitted my first ever sock in October from your very easy to follow sockalong instructions, loved the process and challenge so much that I made 2 more, and 2 more pairs from your cable patterns. Your goody bag would come in so useful – love your summer sunset yarn 🙂 Rachel x

Happy birthday. Thanks to your clear instructions and no fuss pattern I have become an evangelical sock knitter, sharing the joy with several craft friends. You are to sock knitting what Delia Smith is to cooking and Mary Berry is to baking. Praise where praise is due! 7 and a half pairs have been completed. Winter icicle would be my first choice, however would be honoured and very grateful to receive any of the colourways.

I discovered your pattern in lockdown 1, as I rediscovered knitting and am now addicted to sock knitting. I've just completed pair 11 of your basic socks – most have been given to very happy friends and family. I've used WYS yarn, Opal, Regia, Drops and even some hand dyed Riverknits striped with WYS. Going to try some shortie socks and then some easy cabling next, as it might be time to branch out a little. I've also introduced my sister to your pattern and she's done 1.5 pairs so far. Hi, I have my first sock on needles, need to turn the heel but keep being distracted by other things, like cardigans for my baby niece!! Is that a good enough excuse not to have finished? I also need to find some time to sit undisturbed and work out how to turn the heel. WYS keep bringing out such lovely colour ways.

  263. Meg says:

Happy 6th Birthday. I have just cast on and finished the ribbing of my first ever basic socks in Autumn Leaves and am wondering why I've never tried before. My next choice will be Winter Icicle

  264. Simone says:

    Happy Sockalong Birthday!
I’ve always wanted to try knitting socks, so sadly my sock count is zero (but I learnt to crochet a few in December). However this year I am determined to give it a go and not let other people put me off. I’ve gotten as far as purchasing some second hand circulars and will use sock yarn from my crochet endeavours for my first inevitably wonky and uneven pair. Your Autumn sock yarn is lovely (they all are) and is likely how long it will take me to finish one sock! May the knitting spirits be with me. Thank you for providing valuable information and having a nice blog to read. -Simoné R-F

Happy 6th Sockalong Anniversary Christine! I found your Basic sock pattern in January 2021 when I searched for an easy sock pattern. I like yours because it is easy to follow and contents some smart details. I have knitted one pair following your pattern and now I use it to re-knit a pair which I knitted long ago but could not wear because the shape was strange and didn't fit my foot. Your pattern fits my feet well. Thank you! I like Autumn leaves yarn most, but both Spring and Winter are great colours and would make me happy. Kind regards Radana.

Hi granjinx here. Happy Birthday Christine. Many thanks for all your help. I have knitted 10 basic pairs, one easy lacy, and yet another pair on the needles. Can't stop. Any socky prize has to be a good prize. Jean Sturtivant.

    Happy 6th sockalong birthday Christine!

I have not knitted as many socks, by a long way, as the last time I entered, but I have completed two pairs of Winwick Mum socks in the time period. I have tried other patterns, but always check back to the Winwick instructions when in doubt, to keep me on the right lines. In that sense, there is a definite legacy for me, both in terms of a constant reassuring reference point and in terms of getting me on the sock knitting path for life. Thank you Christine!
Were I lucky enough to win, I would like the Autumn leaves colourway – I just love the autumnal colours in whatever I am knitting.

I don't think this will appear as anonymous, but just in case,

Happy Birthday Winwick Mum Sockalong! I'm knitting my first cuff down sock and really enjoying it! I've knitted my heel flap and russet and have got to the point where I'm about to start decreasing for the toes. I really love the yarn second one in from the left. Its gorgeous. Thanks so much.

Congratulations on 6 years of helping everyone to find out how much fun it is to knit socks. I have made 5 pairs and love the Winter Icicle colour.

Happy 6th birthday! I'm still working on my first pair of socks! I love the winter icicle yarn!

Happy birthday sockalong! I've realised I haven't knit any pairs of the basic pattern in 4-ply, but I've knitted 2 pairs in DK yarn and 1 pair in 6-ply.
I find I still rely on your basic pattern for any patterned socks I knit. Effectively I work out the pattern for the leg & patch that in to the Winwick mum recipe for cuff, heel and toes.
Thanks for the pattern, tutorials and inspiration.

(My favourite colourway is the winter icicle)

Congratulations! I have knitted 6 pairs of socks and taught two sisters to knit, one of whom has knitted her first pair of socks. Knitting is a relaxing pass time and I love the little round needle method. Thanks.
