Winwick Mum yarn – Seasons collection

IT’S HERE!

It’s officially launch day for my new Seasons yarn collection, created with my lovely and very clever friends at West Yorkshire Spinners in Signature 4ply, and I can’t tell you how excited I am to be finally able to tell you all about it!

Everybody … I am THRILLED to introduce … the Winwick Mum Seasons collection!

Four balls of yarn lined up on a white board background. The balls are from left to right: shades of green, shades of pink, shades of brown and yellow, shades of blue and turquoise

Oh, it seems as if I’ve had to wait forever to be able to share these photos with you!

The four colours are, from left to right, Spring Green, Summer Sunset, Autumn Leaves and Winter Icicle.

I’m going to write more about them and the inspiration behind them this week, so this just the first of a few posts about the new collection – be warned, there’s going to be LOTS about the new yarn on the blog this week! 😀.  Each one of the colourways has very special memories for me behind them – from childhood recollections of local farmers to long, hot summers and dog walks to a very special visit to the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi in Sweden – and it’s been incredible to be able to bring them all together as colours in these yarns.

Isn’t that one of the wonderful things about seasons?  Wherever we are in the world, we are all connected by them and the memories they hold for us.  We might not have the same seasons at the same time, but that actually adds to the pleasure for me, especially now in the days of social media – I can look at pictures of snow all year round! – and whatever events occur and however much the months might seem to blur into one endless rainy season at times, the seasons have been turning long before we were and will continue to turn long after we’ve gone too.  I like that.  The steadiness, the eternalness of it all.  The reminder that some things exist without having been created by us.

The yarns are self-striping (which always makes you look like a knitting magician to those who aren’t in the know!) and because the yarns are part of the WYS Winwick Mum range, they have the same form of stripes as my last collection.  Ooh, I am so VERY proud to have my own stripes!  It also means that because they striped, it’s easy to match them if you want to (if you’ve read my blog for any length of time, you’d know there’s no way I’d ever design a yarn that didn’t create matching socks! 🙂 ).  If you’re like me and like your stripes to be the same on both socks, there’s a tutorial on how to match the yarns here.

I love the way these stripes work – they’re cleverly created so that they are regular enough for me to match them but the colours blend together in way that makes them different from other self-striping yarns.  Those WYS Dye House Genies certainly know how to weave yarny magic!

Of course, these yarns aren’t just for socks and they’ll look fantastic in lots of different projects (such as this one 😉 ) so don’t feel that they aren’t for you if you’re not a sock knitter!

Along with the yarns, there are four new patterns, one for each of the new colours.

I’m going to tell you more about the stories behind the individual patterns in this new sock pattern collection as the week goes on and why I chose the style for each yarn that I did, but you can see them here in the photos that were taken on the WYS photo shoot.  (If you’re interested in a behind the scenes look at the last collections’ photo shoot, you can read about that here.)

I didn’t get to go to the photo shoot this time because it took place when we were all in different tiers which made travelling difficult – yes, it has been quite an experience creating yarn colourways during lockdown when you live over an hour’s drive from the mill! – but I did send chocolate and that obviously helped because the photos are FABULOUS! 🙂

Each pattern has been written using my Basic 4ply Socks pattern as a base, so if you’re comfortable knitting that pattern, you will at least recognise the basic shape whilst you work on the patterned socks.  If you’ve never knitted socks before, you can find help with the Basic Socks here in my Sockalong tutorials which means that you can feel more confident about tackling a pattern you like the look of as you’ve got back up help!

The seasonal patterns start with cables on Fresh Shoots – easy enough for beginners, so don’t worry if you’ve never knitted cables before (and there’s help in my Easy Cable Socks tutorial with reading charts and working cables) and suitable for everyone to wear …

moving on to a simple lace band around the top of the sock on Sizzling Rays – just the right size to look like a sunset as the colours in the yarn change!  This pattern is perfect for lace knitting beginners (and there’s help in my Easy Lace Socks tutorial with reading charts and working lace stitches) and the ribbed leg adds texture to lift the sock away from being very basic.

Falling Hues is the name of the pattern using the Autumn Leaves yarn.  It’s another lace pattern with a leafy panel that runs down the centre of both the front and the back of the sock, bordered by twisted stitches that look far harder than they actually are!  (I do like a sock that makes you look like an expert even when you might not feel that you are!)

And finally, Frosted Ice, a twisted stitch and lace pattern with a central panel pattern that reminded me of the fractured ice that forms on water – another pattern that looks far harder than it is!

All four of these patterns come in the Seasons collection pattern book, a spiral bound book that will open out flat to make it easier to work from – such a good idea!

The yarns and patterns will be available from West Yorkshire Spinners stockists from today.  You may already know who your local or online stockist is, but if not you can check on the WYS stockist page here.

I’m really excited to tell you more about the yarns and patterns as the week goes on, and I hope that you’ll enjoy the stories behind them all.

I’ll be on Yarn Lane TV at lunchtime (12pm) today talking about the new yarns so you can catch up with me there too (the show will be uploaded to YouTube after it’s aired so don’t worry if you’d like to see it but can’t watch live) – I’ll add the link to this post when it’s uploaded.  You can find the channel online at www.yarnlane.com, on YouTube here, Freeview channel 72 and Sky channel 670.

Phew!  I’m so glad I’ve been able to share all that with you at last!  I do hope you like the new colours and the patterns – and I’ll be back with more to tell you soon! xx

How beautiful, we’ll done you and WYS. Strangely if I had to put them in order of preference it would be the complete reverse of my favourite seasons. I do not like winter but those icy blues are fabulous.

Well done Christine, for once again bringing us sock crazy knitters something to smile about, something inreresting to occupy us during these cold and scary days, and something colourful and cheerful enough to remind us of brighter times ahead! Hello, I live in Canada and have trouble getting the yarn here, I would love to be able to get the 4 seasons of yarn and the knitting pattern book. Can you please tell me the best way to obtain it. Thank you for giving me a taste of home with your musings. I love to catch up with things over a cup of tea. Lynne

Hello! There are WYS stockists in Canada but I'm not sure if the yarn has arrived with them yet – you can find them if you have a look on the WYS stockists list I know that The Woolly Thistle in New Hampshire has it in stock and that might be an option for you if the postage isn't too high to get to Canada. Alternatively, you could buy from one of the UK online websites if they have postage options that suit you. Hope that helps!
