Let it snow …

On Wednesday, thanks to Storm Christoph, it rained.  And rained and rained.  Oh boy, did those clouds put down some water!  Cheshire, and parts of Warrington in particular, was badly hit and the River Mersey burst its banks and people were flooded out of their homes – absolutely the last thing you would want at the best of times but certainly not in the middle of pandemic.  My heart goes out to them and I do hope they will be able to stay safe.

And then, at about 9pm, I went to let the dog out and everywhere was strangely light.  It was snowing!  And it snowed.  And snowed and snowed.  Huge fat flakes that looked like someone was shaking a feather pillow way up in the sky.  “That’ll never stick,” I thought, “it’s been far too wet.”  But it did, and within an hour there were a couple of inches’ worth of snow on the ground.

“I’d really like to go out in that,” said small daughter, hopefully.

“At 10pm on a school night?”

But we’re not living in the “usual” world, are we?  We put our coats and our wellies on and we went out.

Do you want to come with us?

This is a road, not a river!  We’ve never seen it so flooded, it was waterlogged as far as we could see!

We had to get across it and it was almost over the top of our wellies!  Even the dog, who’s usually jumping into every puddle he can find, seemed quite perturbed that a road had become an enormous puddle!

We wondered if we should wait on the bench for Mr Tumnus.

It’s still strange to see the roads so quiet.  You can see that there has been traffic, but we didn’t see too much of it – until, of course, the point where we had to wade through the flood water and then a whole convoy of cars drove past too fast and we got soaked in the spray!

I only need a few snowflakes and I’m happy.

“This has been brilliant,” said small daughter, as we headed for home.

She’s absolutely right.

Ah, you are so lucky to have had the snow! Too bad about the over-abundance of rain though, my heart goes out to those that were flooded out of their residences.
I have moved to within 65 miles of the East Coast here in Southeastern North Carolina in the States. I do not think that I shall see much snow now. Best of Wishes for your New Year!

It was so strange that there was snow and rain flooding on the same day. Best wishes to you too – I hope you don't miss the snow too much! xx

That's a lovely scene, isn't it? It stopped small daughter in her tracks and we've passed them so many times when it's not been snowing and she's never looked twice at them! xx

Sadly, we've just had rain, rain and more rain. I do feel for those whose homes have been flooded. Your snowy, late night walk was wonderful. Thanks for inviting us to join you. xx

Ah, so much rain is quite disheartening, isn't it? It's been very bad in parts of Warrington but we've been extremely lucky here. I'm glad you enjoyed the walk! xx

Wonderful pictures, thank you “small Daughter”. How lovely that you were able to share such a magical experience, it makes the not normal world a little lighter to do things like that. Thanks so much for sharing it with us 🙏

You are absolutely right, and there's always a temptation to say "ah, we'll go in the morning" or "no, it's too late" or "I'm too tired" but I'm glad we did! xx

Thank you for sharing! Small Daughter was wise to get you out there! You made a beautiful memory for both of you, and you have pictures to prove it! there is something magical about being in a "snow globe".

    • Winwick Mum says:

Oh, I love the idea of being in a snow globe, I hadn't thought about it like that! I'll tell small daughter – she collects them so she'll love that idea too! xx

So beautiful – all credit to small daugher who has taken lovely photos – thank goodness you weren't flooded out – but my heart goes out to those who were!!

    • Winwick Mum says:

It must have been awful, especially at the moment. I think the emergency services were in there pretty quickly, but it still doesn't help those who had to stay elsewhere. Hope all is well with you xx

I remember getting a very small son, now 23!out of bed one evening, so must have been 2000 or 2001 to play in the snow because he had never seen or played in it before, good job because it was gone by morning and yes this was the UK.

    • Winwick Mum says:

Ah, it doesn't last long here, does it? We were snowed in just once and that was the BEST two days ever – I live in hope it will happen again, even though I know it will be terribly inconvenient! I'm glad you've got magical snow memories too! xx
