Winwick Mum Sockalong 5th birthday

Happy birthday to you,

Happy birthday to you,

Happy birthday dear Sockalong

Happy birthday to you!

Wow wow WOW!  It’s five years since the Winwick Mum Sockalong started and I couldn’t be happier to know that the tutorials and the pattern are still so useful to people who are just starting out on their sock knitting adventures.

When you create something like the Sockalong, then of course you hope that it will be more than a short firework fizzle in the endless sky of the internet universe, but I can honestly tell you that apart from wanting to make sure that I tried to make it as easy as possible for someone to knit a pair of socks, there was never any grand plan – certainly never any 5 year plan! – and it has been wonderful to see how everything has evolved.

If you’re new to the blog, you might wonder what has evolved in those five years …  Well, in the same year as the tutorials were written and published on the blog (always with the intention of them being freely available on the blog for anyone who wanted to use them), I turned them into paperback form as Super Socks for those who couldn’t or didn’t want to be online all the time, and also e-book form for those who prefer that format.  I started the Winwick Mum Sockalong Facebook group so that people could ask questions in real time and that’s been amazing – there are thousands of people from all over the world in this group and thanks to the magic of time zones and people’s generosity in helping others to learn, this really is a group that works in real time – whatever the time!  There’s also the Winwick Mum Knit n Natter group on Facebook which came about as those who were knitting socks also wanted to chat, to share other project pictures and to just connect with other people.  Both groups have been quite a lifeline during our recent lockdown situation, and it’s been brilliant to see how many people have decided that now is the right time for them to be learning to knit socks.

What else?  Well, I’ve won a few awards now (you can see them down the left hand side bar – I’m very proud of them!), I’ve been delighted to be invited to write articles and design socks for magazines, and best of all – I’ve got my very own Winwick Mum yarn designed in conjunction with West Yorkshire Spinners.  And that’s not to mention all the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made along the way – we never know when we drop a stone into the pond where the ripples are going to spread, do we?

It still blows me away to think about everything that has happened over the last five years.  I have been very blessed, and I never forget that how much of that is down to you – thank you for knitting the socks, for sharing the tutorials with others who want to learn, for giving your time to help others once you have learnt yourself, for buying my books and my yarn … thank you! xx

So what happens now?  Well, the Sockalong tutorials are staying on the blog for free – I have always said that if someone has the money to buy the yarn or buy the book then I would much rather than they bought the yarn and got started – so there’s no change there.  Super Socks is still available for anybody who wants to buy a paperback or ebook version.  West Yorkshire Spinners are still producing Winwick Mum yarn which is available from WYS stockists worldwide.  There may be some more videos coming, but because I move at a snail’s pace where videos are concerned, we’ll leave it as that for now 🙂

Another thing that hasn’t changed is the Winwick Mum Sockalong birthday giveaway.  Every year, I get to do this and every year I think how fortunate I am to be able to even think about it.  As usual there are two prizes:

There’s a signed copy of Super Socks, a ball of Winwick Mum yarn (in either Hidden Gem or Seascape), pack of mini bars of salted caramel chocolate (something sweet to nibble on always helps those brain cells when you’re learning something new!), a set of very cute stitch markers and a Winwick Mum Sockalong badge (which I’ve forgotten to photograph but you can see below).

When I first started knitting socks, I used scraps of yarn to make my own stitch markers but there is something nice about having a marker that’s fun or feels personal to you in some way when you’re knitting.  I ordered these stitch markers from Diana Sian Crafts because I thought they would be a fun way to keep track of your rounds …

and of course they’re not just for socks – you might find you wanted to use them for other projects too!

And this is the Winwick Mum Sockalong badge which goes with both prizes – ideal for project bags and also for wearing to festivals (when we can go to them again) so that you can spot other Sockalongers.

For the last four years, I’ve been asking you to tell me how many pairs of Sockalong socks you knitted since the last Sockalong birthday.  I’ll never know how many pairs of socks have actually been knitted using the tutorials but it’s nice to get at least some idea, so this year will be continuing the tradition.  So far, our running total stands at 12,000 pairs – how many more have been knitted this year?!  It’s not a competition with previous years, it’s just a bit of fun (and might also tell me how close we are to really taking over the world with hand-knit socks 🙂 )

To enter the giveaway, please comment how many pairs of basic Sockalong socks (not other patterns, please) you have knitted since May 2019.  Don’t worry if you’re still making you first pair or are about to cast on, just write that information and your comment will count too.  Because there’s a choice of yarn, don’t forget to tell me which one you would like!

Entries to the giveaway will close at 8pm BST on Friday 8 May 2020 and I will let you know the winners as soon as possible after that time (it may get to Saturday but I won’t have forgotten! 🙂 ).  I am happy to post the prizes anywhere in the world so don’t feel that you can’t be part of this because you don’t live in the UK.  Don’t worry if you don’t have a Google or blog account to leave a comment, you can leave it as “anonymous” but don’t forget to put your name in the comment so that when I post the winners I’ll be able to identify you so that you can get in touch for your prize (and please do come back to check if you’re a winner)!  Oh, and also don’t worry that your comment doesn’t show straight away – the comments are set for me to check them before they upload to the blog to make sure that no spam gets through so they are all safely stored in my blog messages until I’ve seen them.  I’ll make sure they’re all uploaded on time!

Happy birthday Sockalong, here’s to many more years of socking all over the world!

  14. Morag says:

Hello Christine! I've been following you for quite a while, but a combination of lack of confidence and not liking using dpn's has held me back from starting! But I'm glad to say that before lockdown, some short circular needles arrived in the post. I was just thinking about spending my birthday money on your first book and some yarn, and lo and behold, you posted about the giveaway!

If I am fortunate enough to win one of your giveaways (turquoise yarn preferred!), I'll give my birthday money to my local food bank instead. I've promised to send the first pair of socks to my daughter, who lives in NZ, to keep her tootsies warm now they're heading into winter.

  15. Barbiedi says:

I have made 14 pairs so far and have 2 more on the needles, I made all the adults in my family a pair last Christmas. Thank you for inspiring me xxx

  16. Kate says:

Congratulations on a fabulous milestone! Your sock along was what helped me go from being clueless about sock knitting to now having two gorgeous finished pairs!

I only cast on my first ever pair in January and then my second pair flew off the needles in only a week.

Here's to the next five years!

  17. Trish says:

I have made 30 pairs of socks using the basic sock pattern.

  18. Anonymous says:

Hi, what a lovely thing to do. I have knitted 9 pairs of socks since May last year – all for presents. If I should be so fortunate to be picked I would love seascape yarn please. My name is Anne McKnight. x

  19. Clothcat says:

I’ve just cast on for my very first pair of sock along socks in that Hidden Gem colourway, so I’d like to win the seascape one (you won’t believe how long I stood debating with myself over which of those two colours to go for when I bought the yarn – the seascape is very much in one of my favourite colours, so I eventually decided to go with the hidden gem, todo something a bit different for a change).

  20. Rhonda Morris says:

Hi Christine and happy 5th birthday sock-a-long. My name is Rhonda Morris, I live in Scotland UK, and I am currently knitting my very first pair of socks. Love the Sock-A-Long tutorials and enjoying making my first sock. I read the instructions, ordered what I needed, however, ordered a 40 cm circular needle because 30 cm were out of stock everywhere. This was before I read the bottom of the page where you clearly state that we should not be tempted to buy a 40 cm… So, ordered a 25 cm circular needle, which arrived yesterday, after trying and trying and trying to come to grips with the DPNs – I can manage casting onto two DPNs but trying to knit was too fiddly for me. The 25 cm circular is fab – I am nearly to the heel part and excited about seeing the socks when completed. If I am the winner of your very generous prize I would love the turquoise colour yarn – my favourite colours! Thanks very much for starting and keeping the Sock-A-Long going.

  21. WeeRaeHooks says:

I've only recently discovered your wonderful site, (via Virtual Wonderwool Wales event). I had bought sock yarn/dpns some time ago to embark on sock knitting but was slightly nervous about interpreting patterns etc., but your instructions and photos make it so clear – thank you! I've cast on and started my first sock. I like the Seascape yarn. Vicky J.

  25. Sue Halliday says:

I only started knitting my first ever pair of socks back in November 2019!
I'd say I'm at 45% of a pair of socks at present, but I also have the start of another pair on the needles too!

Funnily enough, I was aware of Winwick Mum for a good while before I even started on my sock knitting adventures, happy 5th birthday.

If I'm lucky enough to win, I'd love the purple yarn please 🙂

  30. tink says:

Hello thank you very much for your sock patterns, i have made seven so far in between other projects, i am not fussy on the colour but i love those LLama stitch markers, take care xspecially the lacy ones, they are my favourite,

  31. Anna says:

Happy Birthday sockalong! I’m on my fourth pair ever, which is also my fourth since last year! My third was in Seascape so if I win I’d pick Hidden Gem.

So far I have knitted 10 pairs of socks with your patterns. Recently I discovered that our local yarnshop has wool by the West Yorkshire spinners. Looking forward to knitting with the Winwick Mum's yarn. I would love to win the Seascape. Following you for 5 years now ( it's all Lucies fault!, haha) and no intention of stopping with that.
    Congratulations, Christine!

One. I made my first pair in April and am now exploring your other wonderful patterns. I love both yarns, maybe Seascape is my favourite, but only just! 🙂

  43. Ruth says:

Your world of socks is an adventure. I'm still only a beginner and have experimented with the different methods you have shown. I've become expert at starting again and the West Yorkshire yarn is very forgiving. I'm one sock down but have to finish the second which somehow looks a different size. I like both colours but if I had to choose I'd opt for Hidden Gem. Christine, a very Happy Sockalong Birthday to you and thank you for sharing your skills. Ruth

  44. Sharon says:

    Hi Christine
Happy fifth birthday! I am now attempting my first pair of your basic socks, with WYS yarn! These have been on my bucket list of projects for a while now and I can now get started. If I am lucky enough to win I would prefer the Seascape colour way, but either would be brilliant. Thank you for this giveaway.

Can’t wait to get these socks on my needles.

  94. Scooby says:

I’ve just finished my first pair! I’m itching to get started on the second pair, and the Seascape yarn would be the perfect colour!

  95. happy hooker says:

Happy, happy birthday! Sadly, only 2 pairs of sockalong socks made this year, but have knitted other patterns too. If I was lucky enough to win the giveaway (again!), either colour would be lovely.I'm hard pressed to choose a favourite. Thank you for your generosity. Stay safe. xx

  96. Pam H says:

Happy 5th Birthday. I learnt to knit socks from your online instructions and my husband and I now have a few pairs. I have to confess I have only knitted one pair since 2019!!!. The purple colour wool looks good – not tried purple socks yet. Thank you for giving up your time to write this this blog.

Hi, Congratulations, I have made 7 pairs and one threesome (my daughter asked me to make some socks in graduated yarn that had a very long colour change and wanted all the colour combinations for her socks so I made three socks so she could interchange the colours). I would be happy with either of the colours in the giveaway.

Happy birthday Sockalong! Christine, I'm so glad that you started it. The 2 Facebook groups are even more of a gift at this time ❤

  141. Bright Morning says:

I have a sock along on the needles now. I spiraled the cuff then knitted vanilla for the rest. The yarn is a hand dye that my hubby gave me for my birthday. On the skein it was wildly crazy neon looking. But once knitted it toned down. I love it! I had forgotten to turn the heel on the first sock–so embarrassing. But I fixed it and have carried on to the second sock.

  142. The Quilter says:

Happy Winwick Mum birthday Christine! I've knitted 1 and then discovered your other patterns…. so addictive. Seascape is pretty. Sharon

Thank you for all of the patterns and information and of course, your generosity. I have learned so much already!

  146. Beth says:

Hi Christine – Congratulations on Sockalong's 5th birthday, long may it continue!! I believe I have made 6 pairs of basic socks this past year, but what I really wanted to say is that in the past few weeks I have turned to the tutorials because i needed to tailor make a bigger pair for a relative's arthritic feet. Such a revelation! I've lost count of the number of socks I've made, but never realised that when I divide for the heel I'm using half of my stitches; nor did I realise that my stitches must be divisable by 4 (my fingers cast on 60 stitches while my mind goes elsewhere), nor that I can increase the number of stitches for the instep. Now, I realise that every sock knitter is rolling their eyes and muttering Duh!, but honestly, this knowledge has made me so happy. I feel as though I have graduated a level in sock making. I'm even considering abandoning my dpns and trying out a small a circular needle – brave me!! Thank you, Christine.

What five years I can't believe it! Congratulations and you have achieved so much since then you can be so proud, I have made countless pairs of socks thanks to you since then and have gifted many all received with great pleasure, but this past year my sock making count has been 0, I made myself take a break because as you know knitting socks is addictive and nothing else was getting done, my hands have been itching to start up again my poor needles are twitching in anticipation and the sock yarn I have lined up is screaming at me haha Good luck for the next five years! Stay safe. xx

    Happy 5th birthday!

I've knitted one pair using the original sockalong pattern. I've been starting to try some other patterns, although my approach tends to be to work out the stitch pattern for the leg and then merge it into the sockalong pattern for the heel flap/gusset/toes because I know that works!

I would prefer the seascape yarn.

    Heather M

  176. Unknown says:

    Happy Birthday!!!

I am rather new to this post, so I have not started the sock-along. I am anxious to start my first pair. I have made socks in the past and they are fun because they are easy to "take along." Love your posts and your cozy places to knit. I live in North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA. I am amazed that 12,000 pairs of socks have been knitted in a year! I hope to add to that total. My preference is Hidden Gem. Thank you for the weekly post and for doing this.

  182. Sally Kelly says:

Hi Christine, Thanks to you I have learnt to knit socks this year. The first pair was best appreciated without glasses on!! I am getting better and I'm now on my 5th pair. I have just bought your yarns and sock pattern collection to keep me busy over the New Zealand winter. I love both the yarns equally! In fact I had to buy them all as I couldn't decide. I really love your blog too. Happy Birthday!

  183. Margaret says:

Hi Christine,I love your writing, photos and your books, thank you. Since last May I made a pair of socks while in Australia, when I got back 5 pairs and onto my 6th pair now. So almost 7 pairs. The owls are lovely they are my favourite . Take care.xxx

  187. Lisa M says:

What an amazing journey your sockalong has taken you on, wonderful news and Happy Birthday. I've been lurking for the last 6 months trying to get up the courage to knit socks as I mainly crochet and have now started weaving and spinning. But I knitted a hat for my dad at christmas and I am just finishing some knitted cacti for a friend determined to get the hang of knitting in the round. I feel a pair of socks may be in the offing soon and if I won your competition it may just nudge me there quicker. Seascape and Llamas would be wonderful. Here's to the next five years x Lisa

  188. Unknown says:

Happy Birthday Christine! One year ago, I was a sock-making virgin. I came across your sockalong pattern and used it, plus your brilliant tutorials, to complete my first pair in May 2019. I've not looked back since then and in the one year since I have made 14 pairs of socks to the sockalong pattern, using mainly 4 ply but have also done some of your 8 ply boot socks that are much appreciated by my other half. Thank you for the careful guidance. I could never have imagined myself knitting socks when I came back to knitting about 18 months ago. I like to think that my Mum, who was a knitter, would have been proud of me. If I were to win (and I never do!!) I would be happy, grateful, and astounded, to receive whichever colourway you had left.

Simply love all my hand knnit socks and still haven't ventured away from your pattern . Happy Birthday. Fil

Since May 2019 I have made 11 pairs of Winwick Mum Socks and I have already cast on and worked 1/2 of my 12th pair. I am @Elliementalist on Instagram. 🙂 Very Happy Birthday to the Winwick Mum sock-along. Without you i'd probably not be knitting socks. 😀

I would like to make my first pair when I win one of your presents!
I follow your blog from Belgium and get inspired by your posts!
If I can choose I would love to make a pair with the Seascape Yarn but the Hidden Gem colour is also very nice! Happy birthday and please continue to lighten up our days with your positivity! Peggy Smet / email : [email protected]

Greetings from Canada. I completed my first pair of socks about a month ago and I expect to finish my second pair within a week. Thank you for your pattern and your blog. If I am lucky enough to win, I would love the Seascape yarn and the llamas. I am currently using scraps of yarn as stitch markers.

  197. Anne says:

I have just finished my first sock using this pattern – I've knitted socks before but this pattern gives such clear instructions that I've found it much easier! I would love the Seascape yarn. Thank you!

I've just finished my first ever pair of socks! I had the wool and needles when lockdown arrived – very glad a friend pointed me in the direction of your sockalong posts when I was looking for a pattern 🙂 I have two daughters also keen to learn how to knit a pair now – "if mum can do it, how hard can it be??" (The credit goes to your brilliant pattern!) I would like the Seascape yarn if I won. Thank you 🙂

hello, and Happy Birthday! I just signed on because your site has been recommended – want to start my FIRST pair of Sockalong socks. I'd love to enter your contest, and hope for the hidden gems yarn.
thanks, and I hope to have many pairs to add to the list for next year's birthday. Janice Andrews

Lovely blog. I have knit 4 pairs of socks and just starting a patterned pair. I would love the hidden gem colour way.

  201. Fiona says:

I started knitting socks from your pattern about six months ago . I now addicted and have just cast on my 8th pair. Thanks so much for the pattern. Both of the yarns are ace so I would love either

I heard about you and the socks from Black Sheep Wool and decided to try to knit some socks because the yarns are so pretty. I finished my first pair of socks – in Seascape – on 29 May 2019 so I've been knitting socks for about 12 months, and during that time I've completed 12 pairs (actually a few more but some had to be frogged because the measurements I was given weren't correct!). I'm knitting summer socks for myself at present but I've recently bought some thick wool to make some boot socks for my new ankle wellies and I'll be using your pattern again. Thank you very much for all your patterns and your websites and Happy Birthday! If I were to win I'd like the Hidden Gems colourway. Marilyn Sackman

I have managed to knit another six pairs of socks since May last year. May is also my birthday month and my favourite time of year. Nature is alive
and fresh. I love the seascape colour as I live by the sea. Happy birthday

Thank you for the Birthday give away! I have knitted 2 pairs as gifts for the needy. I would enjoy the Hidden Gem prize.

Sorry I forgot to say which yarn I would like. That would be Hidden Gems thanks again for 5 great years of instructions & sharing your adventures with all of us

One pair for me plus almost finished another pair 🙂
    Happy 5th Birthday!

Happy birthday, and thank you for such an easy to follow pattern. I've made 5 pairs this year (including my new favourite Brightside socks) x If I'm lucky, I would love a ball of Hidden Gem x Kath H

Congrats on the anniversary, Christine. I've following your blog and enjoying it very much for several years. I have the basic sock pattern saved on my computer and do plan on making it. I've only made one pair of socks over the years and one sock each of two other pairs. (Second sock syndrome, eh?) They're all toe up, so it's probably time to learn how to do a cuff down. Thanks for the giveaway, my preference is for the Seascape.

Happy birthday Sockalong! I've used the basic pattern at least 7 times and used the confidence from it to do many other patterns. It's where I send anyone interested in knitting socks. I like Seascape but as all my clothes are blue/green, I'd be happy being forced to branch out with Hidden Gem. Well done Christine! From Sarah in NZ.

Happy sock birthday! I was introduced to the sockalong by my (grown up) daughter just over 3 years ago, and became addicted! I've knitted about 18 pairs. Some to give away, and 2 pairs accidentally washed on the wrong cycle! I don't mind which colour yarn (if I should win), but I love the alpacas!!

  211. Nese says:

I am halfway through my first sock. It is very red and will hopefully grow up to become a pair of Christmas socks 🙂

  212. Sarah W. says:

I have knitted lots of socks including one pair from your pattern. I love it that your pattern is free as I think one of the best things about crafting is sharing the joy. I have taught children of Primary School age to knit and my 21 year old daughter has leant to knit during lockdown. I belong to a craft group and regularly learn new things from ladies in their eighties. I love to make handmade gifts as it is a great way of making friends and family feel special. I like both colours of your yarn so really don’t mind.

Hello & Happy if belated 5TH Sockalong Birthday 🙂

I haven't attempted socks yet, just hats, gloves & mittens so if I'm lucky enough to be drawn I would like to have a go with the Hidden Gem option please.

With very many thanks, Lorna H

  214. Gayle says:

I missed the boat for the giveaway, but for your count: I made 3 pairs of basic socks since May 2019.

  215. Mummy Mole says:

I'm onto my 6th pair! I'm not fussy about which yarn, because I have 4 kids and a husband who would happily give any home made socks a home
