Winwick Mum Sockalong 2nd birthday

Do you know what day it is today?  It’s the Sockalong’s 2nd birthday!  Wow!

Nobody is more surprised than me to be sitting here writing this post and telling you that two years after the first Sockalong post was published, the tutorials are still the most popular posts on my blog – but what a lovely surprise!  The Sockalong started out as three weeks’ worth of tutorials to help people understand how a sock was constructed and (what I hoped) was an easy way to knit one so that they could go off and explore more patterns.  I had no real of idea of what would happen to it after those first three weeks other than I hoped that I’d be able to share my passion for knitting socks and some people might find it useful.

“Some people” has turned out to be rather a lot!  The Winwick Mum Sockalong Facebook group now has over 8,000 members, there’s a lot of pattern, recipe, pet picture-sharing and general hilarity in the Winwick Mum Knit n Natter group and the Sockalong itself is still helping people every day to knit a pair of socks for themselves.  I am more than delighted with how it’s developed a life of it’s own; I love being able to see socks that have been knitted, to help to switch on the electricity for those lightbulb moments and more than anything, I love being part of the community that has developed around it.

To celebrate the Sockalong’s 2nd birthday, I’m really thrilled to tell you that I’m going to have a birthday giveaway again with some really lovely prizes that have been gifted by friends from the Sockalong community.  I am very blessed to be part of such a creative and generous community, and I am very happy to be able to share their talents with you.

I’ve got two prizes this year, both of which are fantastically fabulous and if I can’t tempt you with them, I’m very happy to give them a home! 🙂

In this prize is a signed copy of Super Socks, a project bag, DPN case and notions holder, a ball of Opal yarn, and a set of stitch markers:

In this prize is a signed copy of Super Socks, a unique Sockalong project notebook, a packet of Addi Colibri coloured DPNs, a ball of West Yorkshire Spinners yarn and two sets of stitch markers:

They’re lovely treats, aren’t they?  Would you like to take a closer look?

This prize was gifted by Christine of Woolrich Crafts.  Her project bags and accessories are gorgeous, created from quality fabrics and beautifully made.  The set consists of a project bag which is just right for socks, a DPN case to stop your needles sliding out of your work if you have to leave them mid-project and a notions case for stitch markers, safety pins, tape measures – whatever you need to carry about for your project.  There’s a dinky bird charm as a zipper pull too, which matches the theme perfectly.

Eleanor from Knit Nottingham has gifted this ball of yarn so that you can start a new pair of socks straight away.  It’s a ball of Opal in shade Fresh & Juicy erntefrische Paprika (fresh and juicy pepper) which actually looks more like watermelons to me – a perfect yarn for summer socks I would think, and I’d really love to see what this looks like when it’s knitted up, so if you win then don’t forget to show me!  If you’ve never knitted with Opal before, you’re going to love it – it’s definitely a catnip type of yarn!  Knit Nottingham is a bricks and mortar shop in Nottingham (as you’d expect!) which offers workshops as well as a wide range of yarns and accessories so if you live in the area, do pop in – and if you don’t live nearby, there’s an online shop too!

You’ll be needing some new stitch markers to put in your new notions case and these lovely shimmery ones from Rachel at Demelza’s Delights are just the thing.  These are just right for the smaller gauge needles that you use for socks and shawls, and with so many in the set, they’ll also be ideal for other projects that need more markers (lace, for example) so you’ve no excuse for not branching out!

Anne from AnnieOB Textiles has created this special notebook for the Sockalong birthday giveaway – isn’t it fabulous?  She’s got a real talent for machine embroidery and creates lovely little books which are perfect for crafters.  This notebook has blank pages for you to fill with your own sock notes and project information.

More catnip yarn!  This is the one that I couldn’t put down a few weeks ago; West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply in Pink Flamingo which was gifted by Lucy from Magnolia Tree Crafts in Poynton, Cheshire.  If you’re ever anywhere nearby, this lovely shop is well worth a visit.  Lucy sells yarns, fabrics and all kinds of accessories for crafters as well as hosting workshops and you can also order through her online shop as well.

There are two sets of stitch markers in this prize, both created by Rachel from Demelza’s Delights. She manages to source some really lovely charms for her markers and these two sets are no exception.  On the right are a set of enamel flowers with a jewelled centre, and on the left are “mermaid scales” which shine beautifully as the light catches them.  You’ll have such stylish knitting with these!

There is also a set of Addi DPNs gifted by Eleanor at Knit Nottingham with this prize.  They are Addi Colibri coloured DPNs – which should mean that they don’t get lost as quickly as non-coloured ones because you can see them when you drop them!

I’m sure you’ll agree, these are amazing prizes and I’d like to thank Christine, Eleanor, Rachel, Anne and Lucy for their generosity in contributing them.  I’d also like to thank you for being part of all this too, because without you the Sockalong would just be tutorials on a blog.  This feels like a very special 2nd birthday!  So … the next question is … would you like to know how you can be in with a chance to win one of these prizes?  It’s really easy, I promise!

Last year, I asked you how many pairs of socks you had knitted since the Sockalong started.  I wanted to see if we could get an idea of just how many pairs of Sockalong socks were out there – after all, I do keep telling people that we’re taking over the world one sock at a time! 🙂  – and after adding up the numbers on the blog and in the Facebook group, the total came to 3,500 pairs which is just amazing!  It’s a good job I was sitting down when I worked that out!

This year, I’m going to ask the same question because I’d love to know how many pairs have been made this year.  It’s not a competition with how many were made last year; I’d just like to know, because I like the idea that every new pair has brought some more happiness into the world when they were being made and also when they were being worn.

To enter the giveaway, please comment with how many pairs of Sockalong socks you’ve made since May 2016.  Don’t worry if you’re still making your first pair or are about to cast on, just write that information and your comment will count too 🙂

The giveaway will be drawn on Sunday 7 May 2017 as close to 8pm BST as possible.  I am happy to post the prizes anywhere in the world so don’t feel that you can’t be part of this because you don’t live in the UK.  Don’t worry if you don’t have a Google or blog account to leave a comment, you can leave it as “anonymous” but don’t forget to put your name in the comment so that when I post the winners I’ll be able to identify you so that you can get in touch for your prize!  Oh, and also don’t worry that your comment doesn’t show straight away – the comments are set for me to check them before they upload to the blog to make sure that no spam gets through so they are all safely stored in my blog messages until I’ve seen them.  I’ll make sure they’re all uploaded on time! J

Happy birthday, Sockalong, I really didn’t expect that you would have developed such a life of your own – but I’m very glad that you have!

Edit: the giveaway has now closed and the winners have been drawn.  You can see the results post and find out how many pairs of socks were knitted this year here.  Thank you to everyone who entered! xx

Two pairs completed using my copy of your book since May last year, yesterday I cast on for another pair, using Rico superba tweed in black, grey and cream patterned yarn. For this I need to knit in a very good light, especially when counting stitches against dark needles. DH wears only hand knitted socks, socks are a great portable project so these will be in my bag for knitting in public and travelling.

Happy birthday, Winwick Mum sock-blog. I wanted to say – if you don't mind me rambling on for a moment – that I joined the lovely WM FB page a year or so ago, even though I have hated knitting since the days of compulsory second form housecraft with the horrible Mrs Nelson (while the boys got to play football in the school yard with Mr Penny, and we could hear them shouting and having loads of fun in the sun while we struggled to control the needles and Mrs N told us as often as possible how stupid we were…). But the WM socks were so beautiful, and I had just learned to crochet and was full of joy at being able to do it. It's taken me almost the whole year to get my courage up, but I now have a set of Addi DPNs (love them) and on my computer a library of Youtube videos covering the necessary stitches – and, on my needles, a whole ribbed cuff and most of an ankle. There has, I confess, been some frogging going on and I can feel rising dread as I approach the heel. But I know your brilliant tutorials and all the tips from other members will get me into it and past it. And, best of all, I know if I ever get very stuck, I can always ask one of you lot for help! Thanks, WM and everyone, from Cheryl.

There are so many people in the world who have been put off doing something by thoughtless and unkind comments heard when they were young. I expect that your experience with learning crochet was far more pleasurable because Mrs Nelson had never been involved in that; your dread of the heel will be as much down to echoes of past voices as anything else but I'm going to tell you that there's nothing in that heel that you haven't done successfully already so there's no reason at all why you won't sail through it. Mrs Nelson was clearly an unhappy person and took it out on her charges; it's your choice whether to carry her unhappiness with you now or to leave her firmly in the past where she belongs whilst you discover just how good you actually are at knitting. Always easier said than done (and I carry my own dressmaking demons for similar reasons!) but you know there will always be people to cheer you on in the Facebook group – looking forward to seeing your sock! xx

I have been reading all the tips on your webpage and Facebook page which has given me the confidence to have a go. I have to wear a silicone orthotic on my right foot so am going to try making two different widths to accommodate this.

2years is so cool! I'm so pleased I found the sockalong. I always wanted to be able to knit socks but dpns frightened me and I thought they would be really complicated and fiddly to make especially thin sock yarn. Instead, your pattern and encouragement (and suggestion of small circulars) means I've knitted two pairs of adult socks (on circulars) and I'm just about finish a toddler pair entirely on dpns (I feel very brave). Congratulations on the 2nd bday Christine and congrats to the two lucky winners who get these lovely prizes

Eight (8) pairs so far since May 2016 and another pair just cast on! So wonderful to have socks that actually fit, don't get eaten by my shoes or turned around by my slippers – oh, and warm feet of course. And such an easy project to take around with me. Thank you so much, Christine. Any remaining yarn is being turned into a mitred square blanket, which is looking good so far. However the addictive quality of sock knitting could be a little concerning.

Hello, Christine, and congratulations on the Sockalong's second birthday. I joined the Sockalong and Knit and Natter groups about 6 months ago. While I haven't yet cast on a sock, I have gleaned tons of knowledge and tips, collected enough sock yarn for a dozen pairs, and increased my collection of DPNs and circular needles based on recommendations from the group. I fully intend to knit socks, but in the meantime I am enjoying the Winwick community. What a nice group of ladies and gents from all over. Here's to world peace through socck knitting!

Happy birthday! This time last year I wrote that I'd only knit one lonesome sock, and I'd even frogged it bc I'd bound off too tightly. This year, I'm pleased to say that I've knit 4 pairs of sick so far, the fifth is almost complete, and I'm knitting my first TAAT pair and loving it! Your Facebook group is a great motivation, and really helpful as well.

  236. Katrina says:

Hi Christine, congratulations on the second birthday of the Sockalong! I can't thank you enough for introducing me to sock knitting, it's been such a pleasure using your tutorials and making my very own socks. I have made two pairs from your sockalong pattern and I"m about to start a third pair, this time for my lovely Mother in law. As you know, I recently started a little sock knitting group with some friends, which has been so much fun, helping them along with their own sock knitting adventures. Their socks are all in various stages but one lady has just finished her very first pair, yay! Many thanks once again, best wishes, Katrina Jamieson, New Zealand

After discovering you (yes I claim you as my very own sock guru) last year, I had to bite the bullet and pick up my first ever pair of knitting needles! Imagine the scene, I had only ever managed about 20 rows of knitting in more than 40 years (I come from a family of knitters as my grandmother used to own a wool shop throughout my childhood, I must have been such a disappointment ), and the first thing I try to knit are SOCKS… I LOVE LOVE LOVE them. I've only managed 2 pairs as I predominantly, don't judge, crochet! But, please don't tell my future hubby, I have enough sock wool to don my entire extended family and keep their tootsies toasty roasty. Happy birthday xx

I only recently came across your blog and at The Knitting and Stitching Show in Edinburgh last week I bought myself some sock yarn. So I'm just about to start my first pair!

  243. StitchyDragon says:

Happy sockalong birthday!! I hesitated to comment because my number of sockalong socks since last May is zero (& please feel free to discount me from the giveaway if you wish!) but… I made two pairs early last year & your excellent tutorial gave me the confidence to try some of the harder sock patterns on ravelry & I'm now on my 5th pair! (And I might have a sock yarn addiction ;-)). So thank you very much for writing your tutorials & starting me down this road which I am having a lot of fun with! Have a lovely week, Helen

  245. Loraine McLean says:

I think it's pair no.8 for me, given away a few pairs but I think I'm right. I used to say that I couldn't understand why anyone would want to bother knitting socks, so fiddly, and you can buy all manner of socks these days. But then I saw all the beautiful examples on FB, and gradually I decided to have a go. Bought your book from Black Sheep Wools, and faithfully followed the pattern. And was I hooked?? Loved it, and was so proud of myself. So thank you Christine, for your book, your blog, and your FB pages. Happy birthday Sock-a-long xx

"Happy Birthday Sockalong" from me as well. I took up crocheting again in the autumn of 2015 after a traumatic year. I have since been reading about the therapeutic benefits of knitting and crochet. I didn't know about that then – I just had an urge to crochet something and found Lucy's Attic24 blog. From there I learned about your Sockalong. I have finished 2 pairs and am near the end of my third. I did begin another pair, but the yarn was so full of knots that I gave up splicing it and frogged the lot! Thank you for the encouragement your tutorials have given me.
I have been knitting since a small child, so for at least 50 years. I began my sock knitting with DPNs, but my fingers are getting a bit arthritic and I kept dropping the needles. So I changed to a small circular. Now that I have changed my technique, I am finding they work really well. I used to knit with what I now know to be the English Throwing Method, but researched other ways of knitting and have taught myself a better way, much more fluent and less stress on my hands.
I am loving making socks. They are an ideal project for passing the time when I have to wait for the school bus and during children's music lessons. I don't have a lot of time to knit, so it's encouraging to be able to finish something in a short time. Thank you so much. Gwen Dymond

  247. Caren "Kay" says:

Happy anniversary! Good for you. I'm new to the blog. I've not done any Sock Alongs, but I have finished 3 pair since the begining of the year. Keep sockin, I mean rockin along.

4 pairs, 1 for me, 1 Rosy rollers for DD, welly socks for DGD and 1 baby socks that were binned as the dye went strange after washing. A fairly new member after finding it from Attic 24. Lots of other non-sock projects too.

  284. Jo says:

Congratulations on such a great achievement, I know many people have started knitting socks because your sockalong has been such a big help to them. Thank goodness for Ravelry, I wouldn't have known how many pairs of socks I've knit since May 2016 if I hadn't listed them on there. I'm up to 10 pairs since May 2016 including the ones on my needles at the moment.

  285. Claire H says:

I have made 5 pairs of socks using the Sockalong pattern. I used the Sockalong toe decrease and Kitchener stitch instructions to finish the first pair of socks I knitted (didn't like the toe decrease on the pattern I used). I have also knitted two pairs of socks for my husband using other patterns – but always with the Sockalong toe decrease which is the best I have come across! I would never have felt comfortable about knitting socks without the help of Christine's clear and detailed descriptions and pictures and now love sock knitting. I nearly always have a pair on the needles! Thank you Christine. x

  290. My Creative Life says:

Happy birthday Sockalong! I've just ordered your book and some 2.5mm dpn needles as in the past I've knitted on 2x circular needles for sock knitting. In the meantime I'll get started with your on-line version (thank you). Just wondering if your book has a chart to work out what size socks to knit please. I always buy men's socks in shops as I'm size 8, so knitting my own socks will be a chance to feel feminine!

We got tea and biscuits too:) Thanks for a fantastic book and HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY x

  311. RhianPennant says:

Penblwydd Hapus to the sockalong Christine (Happy Birthday in Welsh) technically I've knitted two pairs, but in reality I've ended up with one almost perfect pair as my first sock was frogged twice and my third attempt was successful and my second sock wasn't quite so problematic. So now I have one perfect pair (although I haven't quite got the striped matching) you're an inspiration Christine- diolch/ thanks for your brilliant blog – I might pluck up the courage and have a go at your cable socks now. After sitting on some sock yarn for about 10 years, longing to get the courage to start on socks, I finally got going after reading about the sock along on Simply knitting. I was so pleased to find your sockalong tutorial and Facebook group. You've broken down the mysteries of knitted socks for us, thank you!
To date I haven't quite made one sock yet. Every time I get started on one I get people wanting things for themselves, but this is the year I will be making myself a pair of lovely warm socks as my feet are always cold in the wintertime especially. As soon as I have the two christening sets, wedding throw, wedding shawl and jacket done, I'm going to make my first pair, the sock needles are sitting beside me looking at me saying, "When's it my turn?" Soon little sock needles, soon! – Kelly Thrower

Happy Birthday! It was fab to see you today in Bournville and one of these prizes would be just the thing to get me started – I am still a teeny bit scared! Fingers crossed xx CarolynStyles

Happy Birthday!! I only learned to knit in March, by watching a couple of Youtube videos, and 17 days later I'd knitted my very first sock, quickly followed by the second one. I've now made the first sock of pair no.2, and I'm up to the toe of the second one in that pair. I'm also down to the heel of sock no.1 of pair no. 3!! I definitely like having more than one sock on the go at any one time!

Thank you for your wonderful tutorial that's helped so many people start to make socks, and happy birthday once again! Fantastic prizes on offer, good luck to everyone who has entered!

Made lots of socks before but only recently discovered your blog which I am really enjoying. Your patterns with all the pictures are brilliant and would have been so useful when I first started knitting socks. I have a project or 2 to finish and then I am going to cast on your cable socks. I can't wait!

I have just bought the wool for my first pair, you have inspired me. Can't wait to give it a go. I normally crochet and haven't knitted for years. With your great tutorials I feel confident to give it a try xxx

I've made three pairs since 2016 and seven pairs in total. They are such lovely items to make as presents and are always appreciated. I love that they are more or less wearable the moment they come off the needles and that there are so many lovely yarns to experiment with.

Happy Birthday! I've made one pair and have almost completed a second pair (at the toe of the second sock). Thanks for the pattern, tutorials and all the sock-related inspiration.

I was late to the Sockalong party – I finished my first pair last month, but I already have another two pairs on the needles! Sock knitting is a joy and I am so glad I finally summoned the courage to try it. Thank you for your wonderful tutorials, they have been so helpful. I love reading your blog and look forward to knitting more of your patterns – I think it will be the easy cable socks next time! 🙂 xx

My comment doesn't seem to have appeared so am having another go! Happy birthday! I could not have made socks without your pattern and guidance and preferred crochet before but now am definitely preferring knitting! I am in my third pair of socks and love wearing the pair I made for myself and my mum loves the first pair I made. Thank you so much for the pattern, clear instructions, your blog and the lovely community on Facebook which is so supportive. I have ME/CFS and cannot do very much but knitting socks has kept me occupied and given me a huge sense of achievement. Xx
