Winwick Mum Sockalong 1st birthday

Goodness, can you believe that it’s been a whole year since the very first socks were cast on in the Winwick Mum Sockalong?  And wow, what a year it’s been!

It’s been quite amazing, and quite emotional too, to know that the Sockalong has helped so many people all around the world to knit a pair of socks.  There are so many reasons why it’s been important to people to produce their own pair of hand-knits, and I can’t tell you what a privilege it feels to have been involved in making this to happen.  There’s something very special about knitting your own socks, whether they’re for you or for a gift, and I know there have been a lot of happy feet this year.  I also know that there’s been a shortage of short circular needles, a rise in sock yarn sales and an increase in international friendships through our Facebook groups.  Magic of all kinds through the pointy sticks!

So what happens now?  More of the same, of course!  The tutorials are staying on the blog, the book is staying on Amazon and the Sockalong is still running.  It’s never too late to jump in and start a pair of socks, and my hope is that more people who have always wanted to knit socks but never managed it for whatever reason will find the tutorials and be able to join in.

We do need a celebration though, so feel free to sing “Happy Birthday” at the top of your voice whilst doing your happy dance in your socks – and if they’re still on the needles you can sing anyway.  If the materials for knitting your socks are still in the bag, now’s your chance to get them started! 🙂

I also thought that a giveaway might be in order so with the help of a few friends I have gathered together some lovely treats and here’s what you can win …

There’s a signed copy of Super Socks so that you can follow the tutorials wherever you are.  The information is the same as the blog tutorials but split by needle type rather than by sock section. It’s a good size to prop open whilst you work and there are just as many pictures to help you get to grips with knitting your sock.

There is a set of very cute tea and cakes stitch markers which have kindly been donated by Rachel Horton.  They’re perfect for a birthday party and will help you to keep track of your decreases very easily.

A skein of very gorgeous Peak District Yarns merino 4ply sock yarn in the colourway “Azalea Walk”, which is the generous gift of Carrie Warr, the talent behind all of the Peak District Yarns.

A year’s subscription to adopt an alpaca at Charnwood Forest Alpacas.  If you’ve ever fancied owning your very own alpaca, this is as close as you can get without needing a paddock!  You’ll get a choice of alpaca to adopt, an adoption certificate and photo of your chosen alpaca and information about the herd at Charnwood Forest.

And last but by no means least, this very beautiful Harris Tweed knitting bag with a matching accessory bag and DPN/circular needle roll with 16 compartments.  This has been specially made for the Sockalong 1st birthday and gifted by Hilary of The Fabulous Mr G and is just the thing for transporting your socks (or any other project) in style.  Harris Tweed is rather special material and Hilary’s attention to detail is superb.  You know you’ll be the talk of your knitting group with these bags – and that’s before they see your knitting!

If you would like to enter the giveaway, it’s very easy.  I’d love to get an idea of how many socks have been made through the Sockalong over the last year, so if you’ve knitted socks, please tell me how many pairs you’ve knitted.  If you haven’t knitted any socks yet but would still like to enter the giveaway, just tell me who your second pair of socks is going to be knitted for – because your first pair will be for yourself!

I’ll be drawing the winner on Sunday 8 May to give as many people as possible chance to see the post, so please do share it if you can.  Won’t it be wonderful to have some idea how many pairs of socks are out in the world?  I’m very excited just thinking about it!

Good luck – and here’s to many more Winwick Mum Sockalong birthdays!

I've made four pairs now, but the first two were not good! Now I've used your pattern though, I have perfectly fitting socks! So, 2 pairs complete, third pair on the needles and yarn for my fourth pair ready to go! Thank you for everything Christine! X

  14. Unknown says:

Four and a half pairs so far. When I first decided to knit socks (a few years ago) my Grandma laughed and said "I bet you only ever knit one sock!" I pulled that first sock out three times before giving up on it. Then Lucy from Attic24 showed us the socks she had knitted with the instructions on the blog and I was inspired to have another go. I can't believe how easy you have made the whole process. I have learned so much and love being part of our online community. Thank you, Christine!

I have knitted 2 pairs of socks using your guide and the socks are sooo comfortable. I am now on my third pair .. this sock making is addictive

  16. Unknown says:

I'm on my second pair using your easy to follow pattern. Thank you so much for sharing this. Now my son's uni housemates all want a pair!

  17. Cx says:

I'm still learning but my second pair will be for my best friend – she understands my need for stripy socks!

  18. Emma F says:

I am just learning to knit, with the sole purpose of knitting socks! I have your book on my wishlist for when I get a bit better. As selfish as it sounds, my second pair would be for me, as I have a circulation problem that causes painfully cold feet. I really want some decent woolly socks! My goal is to start my first pair before then end of the year, which gives me chance to finish the four crocheted blankets I am currently working on. Happy birthday!

  19. Lil says:

I've knitted 10 pairs, 6 for me, 3 as gifts, and a pair for hubby…who is now 'hooked' and has politely ordered more! All thanks to you Christine, and it sounds silly but it has actually changed my life by giving me confidence in my knitting. It's changed my bank balance too but we won't go there! Lil xx

  20. madmummy says:

I haven't knitted any yet as I'm terrified of circular needles. But, after making a pair for me I would start on pairs for my grandchildren.

  21. Camilla says:

I've knitted about 4 pairs over the past year, just completed a pair yesterday. I'm eying up my stash contemplating which one to pick next 🙂

  22. Kirsteen says:

I would absolutely love to be able to knit socks. I'm a crocheter, and find knitting so clumsy, but all these gorgeous hand knitted socks I see all over Instagram make me want to knit a pair – or 10! My granny used to knit socks and my husband loved the ones she made. Sadly she passed away 10 years ago and I never thought to learn from her. So, my second pair of socks would have to be for my husband, in memory of my lovely granny!

  23. cjm says:

I've knitted 2 pairs- the first was for my teenage daughter and the 2nd is for me! Lots more skeins and balls in waiting though….

  24. Jacqui says:

Finished my second pair last week for my father in law's birthday- the ultimate gift for an 89 year old! I have a collection of yarn waiting for the next pair.

  25. Gill Catterall says:

I am a knitted-sock virgin. But I am going to have a go as soon as I have finished the shawl I am knitting for my granddaughter expected on 19th May. I think the 2nd pair I knit would be for her.

  26. Heather S says:

Happy birthday to the Sockalong! I'm on pair 12 at the mo. Can't remember what I did before sock knitting! Thanks for the happy hobby!

  27. Laurafyfe2412 says:

I'm working on my first pair 🙂 its been a slow process as our puppy ate the first one I completed so I had to start all over again. They are going to be for my daughter when they are finished.

  28. MabelH says:

I've made 7 pairs since Christmas, I was a little late to your sock a long party, but so glad I came, I love the portability of sock knitting – if you'd said to me I'd be knitting with thin wool on tiny needles I would never have believed you. Thank you, thank you for your inspiration.

  29. linda harrison says:

I have done 5 pairs- I joined in February- and have the yarn for 26 more!

  30. The Puddle Stone says:

I'm currently on pair number 31, I'm just totally addicted and have a stash of sock wool which is definitely beyond life expectancy……..!!

  31. Andrea says:

First pair in process but 2 more pairs planned and brought for. My daughter has a pair of clear wellies waiting for hers ;0)

  32. Marmaduke McAwesome says:

Ive done one for mee! And one on the go for the bf

  33. NessaJ says:

I've only made one pair of socks, but have squirreled away a few skeins of beautiful wool over summer (which in most parts of Australia is a 'knit free' time of year!). But now I'm getting primed, and well prepared heading into autumn!

  34. Chaya says:

I've only ever made one sock – it was too tight around my calf so I gave up. Once I've made myself a pair, I'd love to knit one for my daughter…

  35. Unknown says:

I was converted to your socks and blog via attic 24 lucy ! 🙂 Lucy's wonderful blogs got me back to crocheting after 30 years and yours have got me back to knitting :-)….I have only been a sockaholic for a couple of months so have only completed one pair but am on the second sock of my second pair.. you have both inspired me so much! Thank you and happy sock along birthday 🙂

  36. Unknown says:

I have knitted 7 pair for myself and two pair as gifts. Love wearing hand made socks!

  37. Donna M. G. says:

I learned how to crochet AND knit back when I was really young – 6 or 7 years old. I "took" to crocheting much better than knitting and have been crocheting for decades (and decades, scarily enough). However, I've always loved knitted items and – oh, my – socks, especially.

After hearing so many people sing your praises, I ordered your book and have been DETERMINED to knit socks. DETERMINED.

I'm still at it, months later.

To be fair, I've had to put the needles down for quite a while, in order to finish crocheting 14 pairs of otters (thanks to Simply Crochet), because otters and their rafting are a theme this year at the school ("friends stick together"), so each classroom will receive an otter (and it would be ideal if the otters are finished before summer).

But once that last tail is sewn on and the otters are in their homes, I'm picking up the socks again. Because I am DETERMINED to knit socks.

    🙂

  38. Unknown says:

16 pairs and no signs of letting up, another two already on the needles!! Hope it's ok to post here as well as on the FB page 😉 Thanks Christine x

  39. Sally Q says:

I've made six pairs so far and am stocked up for another four! How wonderful to have socks that actually fit my feet for a change – although knitting socks needs a health warning – Soooooo addictive! Just as well that both daughters are wanting pairs. And so much more portable than jumper knitting.
    Sally Q

  40. Aileen says:

I've only managed one pair, which my daughter claimed. The next pair are started, but so much knitting and too little time

  41. Dagmar says:

I discovered your blog and Sockalong via Attic24 and love gifting handmade creations. Even so I haven't started knitting socks yet, I got the gear; sock wool, knitting needles, boring stitch markers and of cause your book 🙂 Until I finish the 1000 origami cranes for my son's wedding in September the socks will have to wait. By the time you celebrate the second birthday I should be hooked and able to tell you who got the second pair 🙂

  42. Kathryn at Crafternoon Treats says:

HI Christine! Lovely to meet you again on Saturday, if only briefly! One of these days we will have to make time to sit down and have a coffee and a proper chat 🙂 I'm still on my first pair (hangs head in shame) but I am making progress with the second and will finish them! I may even be tempted to make another pair but the first pair I am going to give away. I have a good friend who is fighting cancer and the chemo has caused neuropathy in her feet, so they are always cold. Once they are done, they are going to help feet that need them more than mine do 🙂 xxx Kathryn

  43. Copper Patch says:

I am well on my way to finishing my second pair of socks. The first pair were started and completed last month so it's fair to say that it's as addictive as I was warned it could be.
Although pair one and two are for me, I have ordered some fabulous bright colours to make some for my boys. Thanks for the pattern, the virtual encouragement to take the leap and of course the giveaway.
    Abbe

  44. Jo says:

I've managed to knit 3 and a half pairs. Due to a fault in the wool I ended up having to spend 7 hours on Christmas Eve knitting a sock! (I'm not a fast knitter) x

  45. Adrienne says:

I'm sad to say I've never knitted a pair of socks, although it is on my to do list. The first paid wold be for my daughter who is a great sock lover! Thanks for a lovely blog – I enjoy all the posts but especially the musings!

  46. Marsha says:

I've completed 4 pair and have 1 sock each of two more pair completed! I have totally enjoyed seeing all the wonderful socks being knitted around the world! (I've actually knitted 7 pair but first 3 pair all got turned back into yarn balls because they didn't come out the right size. But now I have it figured out!)

  47. Jo says:

I'm not sure how many pairs I've knit, quite a few though, my family have all been gifted hand made socks over the years. I don't have any on the needles at the moment but I shall be rectifying that soon, not sure who I'll be knitting them for yet. What a fabulous giveaway, so many wonderful prizes, all clearly thought out to appeal to the sock knitter. I think you may have got your date wrong though, you've put that the giveaway ends on the 8th of March.

EVERYONE is getting socks this Christmas ♥♥

    Happy, Happy Birthday Sockalong xxx

  54. Double Double Happiness says:

I have made 1 pair of socks and it took me so long to finish second sock that the pair ended up being too small for dear daughter! I want to make second pair of socks for donation.

  55. Terri Mc says:

I haven't started my first sock yet but my 2nd pair will be for my kind SIL, Pam. She gave me a pair that she knit recently and I love them. I love Kaffe Fassett fabric and I would use his colorway when I start my socks. I'm a new knitter and am doing up dishcloths as practice . I'm stuck on a shamrock dishie pattern right now and sometimes have too many stitches and sometimes too few on a row !! Practice makes perfect in knitting, doesn't it? I enjoy your blog, Christine . Happy Sockalongaversary!!!!! I cannot believe that a year has passed and I still haven't learnt how to knit and taken advantage of your wonderful sock teaching. But… It is on my radar to finally have a go at learning to knit this year, so perhaps by the next sockalongaversary I will have joined in! Congratulations and well done for such great work in the sock knitting world!

  59. Catie Burnside says:

Hi Christine, Happy Birthday to you and to everyone who is a sockalonger?!!
I can't believe it's a year since we all began our sock journey courtesy of your blog and the tutorials. I am now well and truly hooked, and although I haven't knitted many pairs of socks yet (only 2 pr and 2 on the go) I have loads of yarn ready for me to use. I expect I will be knitting more pairs now as my brother who was always the chauffeur, had a stroke earlier this year and he can't drive at the moment, so that now falls to me for appointments, visits etc so socks will come in very handy to while away the time waiting. By the way, the nurses in the hospital loved my brothers socks which were your pattern. We will convert the world yet MWAH HA HA HA HA!

  60. Anonymous says:

I have knit 7 pairs and pair #8 is started. Five for me, one for my sister, and one for my wonderful husband to wear on our wedding day!

  61. Unknown says:

Christine, I'm DETERMINED to be wearing my own knitted socks this winter onwards. I just have so many WIP's, it's unbelievable. No more now. Then, the Sock drawer commences. YES, OFCOURSE, the first pair will be all mine. Will I wear or just adore, is the question. I want to say that the second pair will be mine too, really. And so on. But, I must not be selfish. The second pair will be for my girl who is an Angel sent from up above. Just for me. I can make a pair for her. Then. Me, me and me. I always have cold feet. I will display them with pride in strappy Birkenstocks. When weather permits. That's the plan. What a lovely, thoughtful giveaway !! Each item. Well done, chick.

  62. Bethany says:

Not sure if I can play along over here in the US, but I've made four pairs of socks and have yarn for a fifth just waiting for me to play with it. What a beautiful giveaway package you've assembled!!

Around 12 pairs in the last year, but I did spend part of it with my right hand in plaster! A very big happy birthday wish to you and also thank you. I have always thought I could knit socks but never dared! I am working on my first pair but have bought the yarn for another four pairs including some yarn I bought in Finland. The second pair will be for my hubby.

  100. Poppyseed65 says:

My mum taught me to knit, my lovely niece gave me sock yarn, needles and your blog address for my birthday last month. I have now started and am positive that this time I will manage the heel (following a previous past disaster). My second pair will be for my sister. Happy Birthday and thank you. Ali

Wow, what a generous giveaway. I am not part of your sock along so not sure if can enter? I have a sock on the needles my first pair in a long time, sock one is done sock two is about half way there, you have reminded me that it is at the bottom of a bag……

  106. A Time for Stitching says:

I've only recently come across the Sockalong despite knitting a pair of socks being on my to-do list for a long time. Despite being a knitter since a child, I've only attempted socks once, a couple of years ago, without much success. My second pair of socks would be for hubby, and that would be the beginning of many until all the family had a pair! Congratulations on your Sockalong birthday and thanks for the giveaway opportunity! X

  107. Two Wednesdays says:

Happy Birthday Sockalong! I've knitted 2 pairs of socks – one for me and one for my husband – I've got a pair on my needles for a friend and another pair started for me! And my sock yarn stash has its own box…..

  108. Unknown says:

As a knitter for over 30 years I never had the courage to knit socks, but with your tutorial you made it so easy for me. I am now the proud owner of 5 pairs of socks and a lot of sock wool waiting for me to knit more. Many thanks to you for all your hard work and for setting up the groups that give me the enthusiasm to carry on this journey xxxx

  109. Unknown says:

I haven't started my first pair yet! Hopefully my second pair will be for my lovely daughter.

  110. MandyM says:

Hello Christine, and Happy Birthday Sockalong I'm halfway through my seventh pair. This pair is for my good friend Pam's birthday (we share the same birthday!) Since finding your tutorial on line, I've been addicted. Your step by step guide (no pun intended) was so easy to follow, so clearly written, I followed it effortlessly. Thank you so very much.

  111. Colin and Wendy says:

I have not started knitting my socks yet, but my second pair will be for my lovely granddaughter, Annabel, who gets very cold feet in winter whilst she is helping out at a riding stables as part of her animal manangement course.

I have got yarn, I've got needles, I am plucking up the courage to start my first pair of socks. These wonderful prizes would give me the incentive to knit a second pair and give them to Ashleigh, my son's girlfriend. Pam H

  113. Happy bird makes... says:

Your easy to follow tutorials saw me knit my first pair of socks earlier this year. I am currently knitting a second pair (also for me- well I am still practising!!)

  114. Erin Park says:

Thank you for the giveaway and happy birthday to the sockalong! I have knitted one sock (still need to cast on the other one) so far. Waiting to finish another project before casting on the other. Second pair will be for my patient husband!

  115. Anonymous says:

I'm on my 2nd pair, and my daughter on her 1st. I wrote you asking for advice how to make size 17 heavy wool socks for my 6 foot 6" tall son, so that's who I made my first pair for. My 2nd pair will go to my other daughter. We were so inspired by your step by step instructions that we ordered enough sock yarn to make at least another 10 pair! Ruth and Joanna from Canada

  116. Unknown says:

Second pair will be for my mom would love to win this awesome giveaway! !

  117. Kat says:

I've knitted three pairs so far and just about to cast on the fourth if only I could decide which yarn to use next! Congrats on your sockalong first birthday.

  118. Katie Hardie says:

Hi love your pattern and instructions. I have knitted 2 pairs on my 3rd.

  119. Anonymous says:

I'm still on my first pair and I'm halfway through the second sock. They're on the large side so I need to do a second pair to get to grips with the sizing. One option is to give this first pair away to someone with larger feet but as they're in the colourway 'Heather' they seem suited to me!

Thanks for all the help and encouragement in your blog and the tutorials. I can tell that I'm likely to always have a pair of socks on the go as they make such a portable project.

  120. Lynne says:

I have nearly finished my first sock – loved it!! Got my mum started on it too, she is finishing her second pair already!! I would knit a pair for my mum!

  121. Linda says:

My goal last year was to knit a pair if socks a month or 12 for the year. I finished 7 and I'm currently working on a mate to a sock for my daughter. I have yet to knit a pair for myself but maybe the next pair will be mine. I love knitting socks!!!

  122. Lynne says:

5 1/2 pairs have been knitted here. Loved every minute of it and there will be many more pairs in the future. Happy Birthday packaging and thank you Christine.

  123. Emma Hargreaves says:

There's nothing like a lovely giveaway to bring out the comments. I have managed 2 pairs of knitted socks and am currently nearly finished my 3rd pair of crocheted socks ( I think these are easier but the finished socks are not so beautiful, still comfy though). The next pair on the needles will be a present so better be good – thanks v much for the inspiration

Happy Birthday! I've knitted 4 pairs with the sockalong and 10 pairs altogether!

  125. Heather says:

Lost count of the number of socks I've knitted in the past year, must be into double-figures by now. Try to have some socks on the go all the time – at the moment got one plain rainbow-coloured pair and another in a basketweave pattern on my needles. For Christmas I knitted three pairs for my sister, a pair for my son's girlfriend and a man's pair for another close friend. Love knitting socks!

  126. Bossymamma says:

My second pair was for my best friend and that has inspired her and her sister to start knitting socks too. It's so infectious. Thank you for your lovely blog and long may it continue.

  140. Darja Mulders says:

    Dear Christine,

I was planning to give my second pair (almost 1 sock done) to my mum, but……… in the meantime I managed to convince her to sock-along with me! And as she is a quicker knitter than I am, she has almost finished her own pair 🙂
Thank you again for the clear instructions and the new hobby!

Hello, I just found this page tonight when I was looking for a sock pattern. It's just what I need. Thank you for doing this. I have wool (enough for 4 pairs – I'm ambitious), I have needles, I have the inclination to start NOW! I knitted my last pair of socks when I was in P7 – just 50+ years ago. My next pair of socks will be for my daughter; hope she likes them.

Can't wait to get the next pair on the needle! Happy first birthday and many congratulations on assisting in the birth of so many socks!!

Hi. I'm on my first pair of socks, meant to be for me but the one I have finished appears to fit my husband better so the next two/ three pairs will have to be for me (already bought the yarn) and trying to resist buying more sock yarn but all the photo,s of delicious yarn on the Facebook page are stretching mr willpower to its outer limits lol.

  158. Rachel says:

I started my first pair of socks in the winter after happening upon your page. I finally finished them up about a month ago and instantly started my second pair that I am currently in the middle of. I'm part way along my first sock and am determined to complete but may need abit of encouragement along the way. I'm inspired by how many other pairs are posted, so envious. yes, I have sock envy!

    • Winwick Mum says:

I'm always happy to supply encouragement, Ann, and if you're on Facebook you might want to join our lovely Sockalong group – there's plenty of encouragement in there (but not always for your knitting – also for buying yarn, accessories, things you didn't know you needed … 🙂 ) facebook.com/groups/642084589269882/

I just found out about your group a few minutes ago and requested to join. I have knitted three pairs of socks and am struggling along with a lace pair.
