Happiness is …

… a fat robin

On Wednesday, I spotted this little chap whilst out at Orrell Water Park.  He made me smile because I’d been reading about Lucy’s crocheted robin which she felt looked a bit overweight – but at this time of year lots of robins look overweight as they plump themselves up against the cold.

… new sourdough starter

It’s been on my to-do list for quite some time and I finally got around to it this week.  Part of me wonders why I’m even bothering when the supermarket now sells sourdough bread and it’s on offer this week – but there’s not the same satisfaction in taking it out of the shopping bag!

… a new jar of honey

This was given to us by a cousin who keeps bees.  He lives in Bath so it will probably taste different to the local honey that we buy.  Just the thing to go with hot toast!

… elevenses

I’m not always very good at stopping for any kind of break during the day, but today was cold and frosty and I just fancied a mug of tea and a teacake!  As you can see, I’ve also been working on my starry sock.  I’m just about to start on the heel flap – I’m looking forward to seeing how it’s going to turn out as I’ve decided to use star stitch instead of the usual heel stitch.

Thank you so much for all your kind comments and support over my sock book and sockalong idea – you’ve given me the impetus I needed to get started, so this week I’ve been busy snapping pictures of yarn and needles ready to get going with my book text.  It’s a good job nobody else looks at what’s stored on my camera!

There’s been a lot of sadness in the news this week and sometimes I wonder if writing blog posts about what makes me happy makes it appear as if that sadness doesn’t touch me.  I don’t live in a happy bubble; our lives feature worries and concerns as much as anybody else’s does – I just choose not to write about it.  Why should I bring anybody else down if I’m having a bad day?  I like to read blog posts that remind me that there are people in the world who focus on what’s good and kind and positive, and I like to write the kind of posts that I prefer to read.  I’m truly grateful for the life I have, and that’s what I choose to share.

I hope that you have a week that’s full of joy and happiness.

Here here! A dose of positivity is just what's needed with all the angst in the world… what's the use of us all feeling miserable, that's not going to change anything, far better to make someone else smile and brighten their day 🙂

I love your pic of the robin and that teacake looks soooooo good 🙂 x

Thank you, I'm glad you feel the same way! He was such a cheeky robin, I couldn't resist taking his picture, and the teacake was really good – I have the crumbs to prove it! 🙂 xx

I agree – spread the happiness. If we want to feel miserable and worried we need only watch the news or turn on the radio (well, unless Chris Evans is on… Or Ken Bruce… Or Steve Weight. But not Jeremy Vine, that's for sure!) now I fancy another teacake – tomorrow's breakfast methinks!

Or Simon Mayo – the confessions make me laugh so much! And your teacakes … now there's another story. Mine are just out of the packet, not home-made. I really must have a go at those xx

Happy Friday! Love the robin… and the teacake, and the honey…. basically really enjoyed your happies. And as a mostly happy person myself, I like reading happy things.

Well done for managing to photograph the robin; I can never seem to get my camera out in time. That honey looks delicious – my other half has a yearning to keep bees ….. maybe one day! Have a great weekend. x

    • Winwick Mum says:

The robin was the easiest bird photo I've ever taken – he just sat on his branch and waited for me! A friend has an allotment on a site where they have a communal beehive and she went on a course to help look after them. Maybe your other half needs to find a friendly beekeeper who'll let him help until he gets his own hive? xx

I for one am pleased that you write good news stories, there is enough doom and gloom in the world and I appreciate something more light hearted and joyful when I am reading blogs in my leisure time. Hmmm, that teacake looks delicious and I love your photograph of the robin. xx

Sending you positive vibes for a better week. I love your Herdy mug and coaster, we are big Herdy fans here! And your sock yarn is a fab colour! Thanks for joining in with Happy Friday, have a great weekend. Penny

Hope you have a great weekend too – mine is filled with happy things as I'm having a great time reading everybody else's Happy Friday posts! xx

You really got a good shot of the robin. I'm always thrilled when I see one in our garden. I bet your bread tastes much better than the supermarket and your house will smell delicious. Oh the last bit of your post made me think. I have a friend who will no longer watch the news. I have previously followed bloggers who talked about their problems and I found it quite draining. It's the one place where we can be happy and talk about the things we love. Good luck with socks, not my thing I wish it was.
    Have a lovely weekend.
    Ali xx

Hi Ali, it's great to see you, and thanks for your lovely comments. Apparently the way to a long and happy life is to avoid the news, the Today programme on Radio 4 and soap operas, so your friend may be doing the right thing! It's hard to walk the line between being un-informed and overly conscious of everything, but I'm doing my best! 🙂 xx

Honey on toasted sourdough is something I like very much. Robins are cheeky wee things, posing for photos as if they were paid for it. Love it. x

    • Winwick Mum says:

Sourdough bread just makes the best toast in the world, with or without honey! You made me laugh, thinking about the robin posing as if he was being paid for it. Surely you'd have to pay him with worms as I don't think they have pockets in their feathers to keep pennies in! 🙂 xx

Hi – love your robin photo – the last time I saw one by the time I'd found my camera, got it out of its case and turned it on, the robin had got bored and flown off! It's true that all the bad news can bring us down because its not balanced with the good news that's happening and there's a lot of that too but at least we help lift things by blogging happy stories and pictures so thanks for sharing 🙂

    • Winwick Mum says:

Oh, what a lovely way to look at it – by blogging the good stuff we help to outweigh the bad stuff! I think the robin I spotted was just a poser – there was no way he was going anywhere until I'd taken my picture! 🙂 xx

Don't worry about being cheery here. For most people blogs are happy places and there is nothing wrong with that at all, also I have noticed that most bloggers go through that worry at some point, so you are not alone! Your robin is fantastic isn't he! Hope that the photographing for your book goes well! xx

    • Winwick Mum says:

You do wonder if people think you wander about with rose-tinted spectacles on! I suppose the joy of blogging is that you can be selective about what you write about. I shall continue to be cheery! The book photos are coming along nicely, although it's taking some serious thought to make sure that I don't forget anything! xx
